2 Samuel 13 — Novel English Bible

1 It happened achar (other) this, that Abayashalawam (Absalom) the ban (son) of Dawad (David) had a yapah (beautiful) achawath (sister), whose sham (name) was Thamar (Tamar); and Amanawan (Amnon) the ban (son) of Dawad (David) ahab (love) her.

2 Amanawan (Amnon) was so troubled that he chalah (afflict) sick because of his achawath (sister) Thamar (Tamar); for she was a bathawalah (virgin); and it seemed palaa (be wonderful / extraordinary / marvelous) to Amanawan (Amnon) to ishah (make) anything to her.

3 But Amanawan (Amnon) had a rai (neigbor/another person), whose sham (name) was Yawanadab (Jonadab), the ban (son) of Shamaih (Shimeah), Dawad (David's) ach (brother/kinsman); and Yawanadab (Jonadab) was a very subtle ayash (man / husband).

4 He amar (said) to him, “Why, ban (son) of the malak (king), are you so sad from baqar (morning) to baqar (morning)? Won't you nagad (tell) me?” Amanawan (Amnon) amar (said) to him, “I ahab (love) Thamar (Tamar), my ach (brother/kinsman) Abayashalawam (Absalom's) achawath (sister).”

5 Yahawanadab (Jonadab) amar (said) to him, “shakab (lay) down on your mashakab (bed), and pretend to be chalah (afflict). When your ab (father) bawaa (bring) to raah (see / saw) you, amar (said) him, ‘Please let my achawath (sister) Thamar (Tamar) bawaa (bring) and give me lacham (bread) to eat, and ishah (make) the lacham (food) in my iyan (eye), that I may raah (see / saw) it, and akal (eat) it from her yad (hand).’”

6 So Amanawan (Amnon) shakab (lay) down and faked being chalah (afflict). When the malak (king) bawaa (bring) to raah (see / saw) him, Amanawan (Amnon) amar (said) to the malak (king), “Please let my achawath (sister) Thamar (Tamar) bawaa (bring), and labab (make) me a shanayam (two) of lababawath (cakes) in my iyan (eye), that I may barah (eat) from her yad (hand).”

7 Then Dawad (David) shalach (send) bayath (house) to Thamar (Tamar), amar (said), “yalak (go) now to your ach (brother/kinsman) Amanawan (Amnon's) bayath (house), and ishah (make) food for him.”

8 So Thamar (Tamar) yalak (went) to her ach (brother/kinsman) Amanawan (Amnon's) bayath (house); and he was shakab (laid) down. She laqach (take / seize) batzaq (dough), and lawash (kneaded) it, and labab (made) cakes in his iyan (eye), and bashal (baked) the labab (cakes).

9 She laqach (take / seize) the masharath (pan), and yatzaq (poured) them out panayam (face) him; but he maan (refused) to akal (eat). Amanawan (Amnon) amar (said), “Have all ayash (man / husband) leave me.” Every ayash (man / husband) yatzaa (go out / come out) out from him.

10 Amanawan (Amnon) amar (said) to Thamar (Tamar), “bawaa (bring) the food into the room, that I may barah (eat) from your yad (hand).” Thamar (Tamar) laqach (take / seize) the lababawath (cakes) which she ishah (make) made, and bawaa (bring) them into the room to Amanawan (Amnon) her ach (brother/kinsman).

11 When she had nagash (brought) them near to him to akal (eat), he chazaq (took) hold of her, and amar (said) to her, “bawaa (bring), shakab (lie) with me, my achawath (sister)!”

12 She amar (said) him, “No, my ach (brother/kinsman), do not inah (answer / respond) me! For no such thing ought to be ishah (make) in Yashar-Al (Israel). Don't you ishah (make) this nabalah (folly).

13 I, where would I yalak (carry) my charapah (shame)? And as for you, you will be as achad (one) of the nabalayam (fools) in Yashar-Al (Israel). Now therefore, please dabar (word / matter) to the malak (king); for he will not manai (withhold) me from you.”

14 However he would not shamai (hearken / hear) to her qawal (sound / voice); but being chazaq (stronger) than she, he inah (answer / respond) her, and shakab (lay) with her.

15 Then Amanawan (Amnon) shanaa (hate) her with exceeding great hatred; for the hatred with which he shanaa (hate) her was greater than the ahabah (love) with which he had ahab (love) her. Amanawan (Amnon) amar (said) to her, “qawam (rise up), be yalak (gone)!”

16 She amar (said) to him, “Not so, awadawath (because) this rai (great) wrong in shalach (send) me away is worse than the other that you ishah (make) to me!” But he would not shamai (hearken / hear) to her.

17 Then he qaraa (called) his nair (servant) who sharath (ministered) to him, and amar (said), “shalach (send) now this chawatz (woman) out from me, and nail (bolt) the dalath (door) achar (other) her.”

18 She had a kathanath (garment) of various colors on her; for with such maiyalayam (robes) were the malak (king) banawath (daughters) who were bathawalath (virgins) dressed. Then his sharath (servant) yatzaa (go out / come out) her out, and nail (bolted) the dalath (door) achar (other) her.

19 Thamar (Tamar) put ashes on her raash (head), and qarai (tore) her kathanath (garment) of various colors that was on her; and she shawam (place / establish / appoint) her yad (hand) on her raash (head), and yalak (went) her way, zaiq (crying) aloud as she went.

20 Abayashalawam (Absalom) her ach (brother/kinsman) amar (said) to her, “Has Amanawan (Amnon) your ach (brother/kinsman) been with you? But now hold your charash (peace), my achawath (sister). He is your ach (brother/kinsman). Don't shayath (put / appoint / make) this thing to heart.” So Thamar (Tamar) yashab (inhabit/dwell) shamam (desolate) in her ach (brother/kinsman) Abayashalawam (Absalom's) bayath (house).

21 But when malak (king) Dawad (David) shamai (hearken / hear) of all these things, he was very charah (hot with anger).

22 Abayashalawam (Absalom) dabar (word / matter) to Amanawan (Amnon) neither tawab (good / proper function) nor rai (bad); for Abayashalawam (Absalom) shanaa (hate) Amanawan (Amnon), dabar (word / matter) he had inah (answer / respond) his achawath (sister) Thamar (Tamar).

23 It happened after yawam (day) full shanathayam (years), that Abayashalawam (Absalom) had sheepshearers in Bailachatzawar (Baal Hazor), which is beside Aparayam (Ephraim): and Abayashalawam (Absalom) qaraa (called) all the malak (king) banay (my son).

24 Abayashalawam (Absalom) bawaa (bring) to the malak (king), and amar (said), “See now, your ibad (servant) has sheepshearers. Please yalak (let) the malak (king) and his ibad (servant) yalak (go) with your ibad (servant).”

25 The malak (king) amar (said) to Abayashalawam (Absalom), “No, my ban (son), yalak (let) us not all go, lest we be burdensome to you.” He paratz (pressed) him; however he would not yalak (go), but barak (blessed) him.

26 Then Abayashalawam (Absalom) amar (said), “If not, please let my ach (brother/kinsman) Amanawan (Amnon) yalak (go) with us.” The malak (king) amar (said) to him, “Why should he yalak (go) with you?”

27 But Abayashalawam (Absalom) paratz (pressed) him, and he let Amanawan (Amnon) and all the malak (king) banay (my son) shalach (send) with him.

28 Abayashalawam (Absalom) tzawah (commanded) his nair (servants), amar (said), “raah (see / saw) now, when Amanawan (Amnon's) lab (heart) is tawab (good / proper function) with yayan (wine); and when I amar (said) you, ‘nakah (strike) Amanawan (Amnon),’ then mawath (death) him. Don't be yaraa (fear / be afraid). Haven't I tzawah (commanded) you? Be courageous, and be ban (son)!”

29 The nairay (servants) of Abayashalawam (Absalom) ishah (make) to Amanawan (Amnon) as Abayashalawam (Absalom) had tzawah (commanded). Then all the malak (king) banay (my son) qawam (rise up), and every ayash (man / husband) qawam (rise up) up on his parad (mule), and nawas (fled).

30 It happened, while they were in the darak (way), that the shamawaih (news) bawaa (bring) to Dawad (David), amar (said), “Abayashalawam (Absalom) has nakah (slain) all the malak (king) banay (my son), and there is not achad (one) of them yathar (left)!”

31 Then the malak (king) qawam (rise up), and qarai (tore) his bagadayam (garments), and shakab (lay) on the aratz (Earth/land); and all his ibad (servant) natzab (stood) by with their clothes qarai (torn).

32 Yawanadab (Jonadab), the ban (son) of Shamaih (Shimeah), Dawad (David's) ach (brother/kinsman), inah (answer / respond), “Don't let my Adawan () amar (spoke) that they have mawath (death) all the nair (young) men the malak (king) banay (sons); for Amanawan (Amnon) only is mawath (death); for by the pah (appointment) of Abayashalawam (Absalom) this has been shawam (place / establish / appoint) from the yawam (day) that he inah (oppress / afflict) his achawath (sister) Thamar (Tamar).

33 Now therefore don't let my Adawan () the malak (king) shawam (place / establish / appoint) the thing to his lab (heart), to amar (spoke) that all the malak (king) banay (sons) are mawath (death); for Amanawan (Amnon) only is mawath (death).”

34 But Abayashalawam (Absalom) barach (fled). The nair (young) man who kept the tzapah (watchman / keep watch) nashaa (lift) up his iyan (eye), and raah (see / saw), and behold, many im (nation / people) were coming by darak (way) of the hillside achar (other) him.

35 Yawanadab (Jonadab) amar (said) to the malak (king), “Behold, the malak (king) banay (my son) are bawaa (bring)! It is as your ibad (servant) dabar (word / matter).”

36 It happened, as soon as he kalah (complete / finish) finished dabar (word / matter), that behold, the malak (king) banay (my son) bawaa (bring), and nashaa (lift) up their qawal (sound / voice), and bakah (wept). The malak (king) also and all his ibad (servant) bakah (wept) bitterly.

37 But Abayashalawam (Absalom) barach (fled), and yalak (went) to Thalamay (Talmai) the ban (son) of Imayachawar (Ammihur), malak (king) of Gashawar (Geshur). Dawad (David) abal (mourned) for his ban (son) every yawam (day).

38 So Abayashalawam (Absalom) barach (fled), and yalak (went) to Gashawar (Geshur), and was there shalawash (three) shanayam (two).

39 Malak (king) Dawad (David) kalah (complete / finish) to yatzaa (go out / come out) forth to Abayashalawam (Absalom): for he was nacham (turn away / repent) concerning Amanawan (Amnon), since he was mawath (death).
