2 Samuel 17 — Novel English Bible

1 Moreover Achayathapal (Ahithophel) amar (said) to Abayashalawam (Absalom), “Let me now bachar (choose) shanayam (two) alap (thousand) ayash (man / husband), and I will qawam (rise up) and radap (pursue) achar (other) Dawad (David) tonight.

2 I will bawaa (bring) on him while he is yagai (weary) and exhausted, and will make him charad (afraid). All the im (nation / people) who are with him shall nawas (flee). I will nakah (strike) the malak (king) only;

3 And I will shawab (turn) back all the im (nation / people) to you. The ayash (man / husband) whom you baqash (seek) is as if shawab (turn) returned. All the im (nation / people) shall be in shalawam (peace / safety).”

4 The dabar (word / matter) yashar (upright) Abayashalawam (Absalom) iyan (eye), and all the zaqanay (elders) of Yashar-Al (Israel).

5 Then Abayashalawam (Absalom) amar (said), “Now qaraa (called) Chawashay (Hushai) the arakay (archite) also, and shamai (hearken / hear) us hear likewise what he pah (says).”

6 When Chawashay (Hushai) bawaa (bring) come to Abayashalawam (Absalom), Abayashalawam (Absalom) amar (said) to him, amar (said), “Achayathapal (Ahithophel) has dabar (word / matter) like this. Shall we ishah (make) dabar (word / matter) he says? If not, dabar (word / matter) up.”

7 Chawashay (Hushai) amar (said) to Abayashalawam (Absalom), “The itzah (counsel) that Achayathapal (Ahithophel) has yaitz (given) paim (this) time is not tawab (good / proper function).”

8 Chawashay (Hushai) amar (said) moreover, “You yadai (know) your ab (father) and his yadai (men), that they are gabawar (mighty) men, and they are fierce in their napash (soul), like a dab (bear) robbed of her cubs in the shadah (field). Your ab (father) is a ayash (man / husband) of malachamah (war), and will not lawan (lodge) with the im (nation / people).

9 Behold, he is now chabaa (hidden) in some pachath (pit), or in some other maqawam (place). It will happen, when some of them napal (fall / be cast down) fallen at the thachalah (first), that whoever shamai (hearken / hear) it will amar (said), ‘There is a magapah (slaughter) among the im (nation / people) who achar (other) Abayashalawam (Absalom)!’

10 Even he who is ban (son), whose lab (heart) is as the lab (heart) of a aray (lion), will masas (utterly) masas (melt); for all Yashar-Al (Israel) yadai (knows) that your ab (father) is a gabawar (mighty) man, and those who are with him are chayal (wealth / substance / capability / valor) banay (my son).

11 But I yaitz (counsel) that all Yashar-Al (Israel) be asap (gathered) asap (together) to you, from Dan (Dan) even to Baar-Shabai (Beersheba), as the chawal (sand) that is by the yam (sea/waters) for rab (multitude); and that you halak (move) to qarab (battle) in your own panayam (face).

12 So shall we bawaa (bring) on him in some maqawam (place) where he shall be matzaa (found), and we will matzaa (light) on him as the tal (dew) napal (fall / be cast down) on the adamah (ground); and of him and of all the achad (one) who are with him we will not yathar (leave) so much as achad (one).

13 Moreover, if he be gone into a iyar (city), then shall all Yashar-Al (Israel) nashaa (lift) chabalayam (ropes) to that iyar (city), and we will sachab (draw) it into the nachal (stream / river), until there isn't gam (indeed / moreover) small tzarawar (stone) matzaa (found) there.”

14 Abayashalawam (Absalom) and all the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) amar (spoke), “The itzah (counsel) of Chawashay (Hushai) the arakay (archite) is tawab (good / proper function) than the itzah (counsel) of Achayathapal (Ahithophel).” For Yahawah () had ordained to parar (defeat) the tawab (good / proper function) itzah (counsel) of Achayathapal (Ahithophel), to the intent that Yahawah () might bawaa (come) rai (evil) on Abayashalawam (Absalom).

15 Then Chawashay (Hushai) amar (said) to Tzadawaq (Zadok) and to Abayathar (Abiathar) the kahanayam (priests), “Achayathapal (Ahithophel) yaitz (counseled) Abayashalawam (Absalom) and the zaqanay (elders) of Yashar-Al (Israel) that way; and I have yaitz (counseled) this way.

16 Now therefore shalach (send) maharah (quickly), and nagad (tell) Dawad (David), amar (said), ‘Don't lawan (lodge) this layal (night) at the fords of the madabar (wilderness), but by ibar (pass over/through) means ibar (pass over/through) over; lest the malak (king) be balai (swallowed) up, and all the im (nation / people) who are with him.’”

17 Now Yahawanathan (Jonathan) and Achayamaitz (Ahimaaz) were imad (staying) by Iyanaragal (En Rogel); and a female shapachah (servant) used to halak (move) and nagad (tell) them; and they halak (move) and nagad (told) malak (king) Dawad (David). For they yakal (might) not be raah (see / saw) to bawaa (bring) into the iyar (city).

18 But a nair (boy) raah (see / saw) them, and nagad (told) Abayashalawam (Absalom). Then they shanayam (two) yalak (went) away maharah (quickly), and bawaa (bring) to the bayath (house) of a ayash (man / husband) in Bacharayam (Bahurim), who had a baar (well) in his chatzar (court); and they yarad (went) down there.

19 The ayashah (woman / wife) laqach (take / seize) and parash (spread) the masak (covering) over the baar (well's) panayam (face), and shatach (spread) out bruised grain on it; and nothing was yadai (known).

20 Abayashalawam (Absalom's) ibaday (servant of) bawaa (bring) to the ayashah (woman / wife) to the bayath (house); and they amar (said), “Where are Achayamaitz (Ahimaaz) and Yahawanathan (Jonathan)?” The ayashah (woman / wife) amar (said) to them, “They ibar (pass over/through) gone over the mayakal (brook) of mayam (Waters).” When they had baqash (sought) and could not matzaa (find) them, they shawab (turn) to Yarawashalam (Yarawashalam / Jerusalem).

21 It happened, achar (other) they had departed, that they ilah (go up / offer) up out of the baar (well), and yalak (went) and nagad (told) malak (king) Dawad (David); and they said to Dawad (David), “qawam (rise up) and pass maharah (quickly) over the mayam (Waters); for thus has Achayathapal (Ahithophel) counseled against you.”

22 Then Dawad (David) qawam (rise up), and all the im (nation / people) who were with him, and they ibar (pass over/through) over the Yaradan (Jordan). By the baqar (morning) awar (light) there idar (lacked) not achad (one) of them who ibar (pass over/through) not gone over the Yaradan (Jordan).

23 When Achayathapal (Ahithophel) raah (see / saw) that his itzah (counsel) was not ishah (make), he chabash (saddled) his donkey, and qawam (rise up), and yalak (went) home, to his iyar (city), and set his yalak (house) in tzawah (order), and hanged himself; and he mawath (death), and was qabar (grave / tomb / sepulcher) in the tomb of his ab (father).

24 Then Dawad (David) bawaa (bring) to Machanayam (Mahanaim). Abayashalawam (Absalom) ibar (pass over/through) over the Yaradan (Jordan), he and all the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) with him.

25 Abayashalawam (Absalom) shawam (place / establish / appoint) Imashaa (Amasa) over the tzabaa (troop) instead of Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab). Now Imashaa (Amasa) was the ban (son) of a ayash (man / husband), whose sham (name) was Yatharaa (Ithra) the Yasharaalay (Israelite), who bawaa (bring) in to Abayagayal (Abigail) the banath (daughter) of Nachash (Nahash), achawath (sister) to Tzarawayah (Zeruiah), Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) am (mother).

26 Yashar-Al (Israel) and Abayashalawam (Absalom) chanah (encamped) in the aratz (Earth/land) of Galaid (Gilead).

27 It happened, when Dawad (David) bawaa (bring) come to Machanayam (Mahanaim), that Shabay (Shobi) the ban (son) of Nachash (Nahash) of Rabah (Rabbah) of the banay (my son) of Imawan (Ammon), and Makayar (Machir) the ban (son) of Imayaal (Ammiel) of Laadabar (Lodebar), and Barazalay (Barzillai) the Galaiday (Gileadite) of Ragalayam (Rogelim),

28 Brought mashakab (beds), basins, yatzar (earthen) kalay (vessels), chatah (wheat), shairah (barley), qamach (meal), qalay (parched) grain, pawal (beans), lentils, roasted grain,

29 Dabash (honey), chamaah (butter), tzaan (sheep), and shapah (cheese) of the baqar (morning), for Dawad (David), and for the im (nation / people) who were with him, to akal (eat): for they amar (said), “The im (nation / people) are raib (hungry), and iyap (weary), and thirsty, in the madabar (wilderness).”
