2 Samuel 18 — Novel English Bible

1 Dawad (David) paqad (visit) the im (nation / people) who were with him, and shawam (place / establish / appoint) sharay (captains) of alapayam (thousands) and sharay (captains) of maawath (hundreds) over them.

2 Dawad (David) shalach (send) forth the im (nation / people), a shalayashay (third) part under the yad (hand) of Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab), and a shalayashay (third) part under the yad (hand) of Abayashay (Abishai) the ban (son) of Tzarawayah (Zeruiah), Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) ach (brother/kinsman), and a shalayashay (third) part under the yad (hand) of Athay (Ittai) the Gathay (Gittite). The malak (king) amar (said) to the im (nation / people), “I will yatzaa (go out / come out) yatzaa (go out / come out) forth with you anay (myself) also.”

3 But the im (nation / people) amar (said), “You shall not yatzaa (go out / come out) forth; for if we nawas (flee) nawas (away), they will not shawam (place / establish / appoint) for us; neither if chatzay (half) of us mawath (death), will they shawam (place / establish / appoint) for us. But you are kamaw (worth) ishar (ten) alap (thousand) of us. Therefore now it is tawab (good / proper function) that you are ready to izar (help) us out of the iyar (city).”

4 The malak (king) amar (said) to them, “I will ishah (make) what seems yatab (best) to you.” The malak (king) imad (stood) yad (hand) the shair (gate), and all the im (nation / people) yatab (went) out by maawath (hundreds) and by alapayam (thousands).

5 The malak (king) tzawah (commanded) Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) and Abayashay (Abishai) and Athay (Ittai), amar (said), “Deal at (gently) for my sake with the nair (young) man, even with Abayashalawam (Absalom).” All the im (nation / people) shamai (hearken / hear) when the malak (king) tzawah (commanded) all the sharayam (captains) dabar (word / matter) Abayashalawam (Absalom).

6 So the im (nation / people) yatzaa (go out / come out) out into the shadah (field) qaraah (against) Yashar-Al (Israel): and the malachamah (battle) was in the yair (forest) of Aparayam (Ephraim).

7 The im (nation / people) of Yashar-Al (Israel) were nagap (struck) there panayam (face) the ibaday (servant of) of Dawad (David), and there was a gadawal (very great/important/mighty) magapah (slaughter) there that yawam (day) of isharayam (twenty) alap (thousand) men.

8 For the malachamah (battle) was there pawatz (spread) over the surface of all the aratz (Earth/land); and the yair (forest) akal (eat) more im (nation / people) that yawam (day) than the charab (sword) akal (eat).

9 Abayashalawam (Absalom) qaraa (called) to meet the panay (face of) of Dawad (David). Abayashalawam (Absalom) was rakab (riding) on his parad (mule), and the parad (mule) bawaa (bring) under the shawabak (thick) boughs of a gadawal (very great/important/mighty) alah (these), and his raash (head) chazaq (caught) hold of the alah (these), and he was nathan (give) up between the sky and aratz (Earth/land); and the parad (mule) that was under him ibar (pass over/through) on.

10 A achad (one) ayash (man / husband) raah (see / saw) it, and nagad (told) Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab), and said, “raah (see / saw), I saw Abayashalawam (Absalom) thalah (hanging) in an alah (these).”

11 Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) amar (said) to the ayash (man / husband) who amar (said) him, “raah (see / saw), you saw it, and why didn't you nakah (strike) him there to the aratz (Earth/land)? I nathan (give) have given you ishar (ten) pieces of kasap (silver), and a sash.”

12 The ayash (man / husband) amar (said) to Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab), “lawaa (do not) I should shaqal (receive) a alap (thousand) pieces of kasap (silver) in my kap (hand), I still wouldn't shalach (send) forth my kap (hand) against the malak (king) ban (son); for in our azan (ear) the malak (king) tzawah (commanded) you and Abayashay (Abishai) and Athay (Ittai), amar (said), ‘Beware that none touch the nair (young) man Abayashalawam (Absalom).’

13 Aw (or) if I ishah (make) dealt falsely against his napash (soul) (and there is no dabar (word / matter) kachad (hidden) from the malak (king)), then you yourself would have yatzab (set) yourself against me.”

14 Then Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) amar (said), “I'm not going to yachal (wait) like this with you.” He laqach (take / seize) shalawash (three) shabatayam (darts) in his kap (hand), and thaqai (blow / sound alarm) them through the lab (heart) of Abayashalawam (Absalom), while he was yet chay (life) in the midst of the alah (these).

15 Ishar (ten) nair (young) men who nashaa (lift) Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) armor surrounded and nakah (struck) Abayashalawam (Absalom), and nakah (killed) him.

16 Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) thaqai (blow / sound alarm) the shawapar (Shofar / Ram's horn), and the im (nation / people) shawab (turn) from radap (pursuing) achar (other) Yashar-Al (Israel); for Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) chashak (darkness) back the im (nation / people).

17 They laqach (take / seize) Abayashalawam (Absalom), and shalak (cast) him into the gadawal (very great/important/mighty) pachath (pit) in the yair (forest), and raised over him a very gadawal (very great/important/mighty) gal (heap) of abanayam (stones). Then all Yashar-Al (Israel) nawas (fled) everyone to his ahal (tent).

18 Now Abayashalawam (Absalom) in his chay (life) had laqach (take / seize) and natzab (reared) up for himself the matzabath (pillar), which is in the malak (king) imaq (dale); for he amar (said), “I have no ban (son) to keep my sham (name) in memory.” He qaraa (called) the matzabath (pillar) after his own sham (name); and it is qaraa (called) Abayashalawam (Absalom's) monument, to this yawam (day).

19 Then Achayamaitz (Ahimaaz) the ban (son) of Tzadawaq (Zadok) amar (spoke), “Let me now rawatz (run), and bashar (bear) the malak (king) news, how that Yahawah () has shapat (judge / judgement) him of his yad (hand).”

20 Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) amar (said) to him, “You shall not be the bearer of news this yawam (day), but you shall bashar (bear) news achar (other) yawam (day). But today you shall bashar (bear) no news, because the malak (king) ban (son) is mawath (death).”

21 Then Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) amar (said) to the Kawashay (Cushite), “yalak (go), nagad (tell) the malak (king) what you raah (see / saw) seen!” The Kawashay (Cushite) shachah (bowed) himself to Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab), and rawatz (ran).

22 Then Achayamaitz (Ahimaaz) the ban (son) of Tzadawaq (Zadok) amar (said) yet again to Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab), “But come mah (what) may, please let me also rawatz (run) achar (other) the Kawashay (Cushite).” Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) amar (said), “Why do you want to rawatz (run), my ban (son), since that you will matzaa (have) no reward for the news?”

23 “But come what may,” he amar (said), “I will rawatz (run).” He amar (said) to him, “rawatz (run)!” Then Achayamaitz (Ahimaaz) rawatz (ran) by the darak (way) of the kakar (plain), and outran the Kawashay (Cushite).

24 Now Dawad (David) was sitting between the shanayam (two) shairayam (gates): and the tzapah (watchman / keep watch) yalak (went) up to the gag (roof) of the shair (gate) to the chawamah (wall), and nashaa (lift) up his iyan (eye), and raah (see / saw), and, behold, a ayash (man / husband) running rawatz (alone).

25 The tzapah (watchman / keep watch) qaraa (called), and nagad (told) the malak (king). The malak (king) said, “If he is bashawarah (alone), there is news in his pah (mouth).” He yalak (came) closer and closer.

26 The tzapah (watchman / keep watch) raah (see / saw) achar (other) ayash (man / husband) running; and the tzapah (watchman / keep watch) qaraa (called) to the shawair (porter), and amar (said), “Behold, a ayash (man / husband) running alone!” The malak (king) amar (said), “He also bashar (brings) news.”

27 The tzapah (watchman / keep watch) amar (said), “I raah (see / saw) the marawatzah (running) of the raashawan (first) one is like the marawatzah (running) of Achayamaitz (Ahimaaz) the ban (son) of Tzadawaq (Zadok).” The malak (king) amar (said), “He is a tawab (good / proper function) ayash (man / husband), and bawaa (bring) with tawab (good / proper function) news.”

28 Achayamaitz (Ahimaaz) qaraa (called), and amar (spoke) to the malak (king), “shalawam (peace / safety) is well.” He shachah (bowed) himself before the malak (king) with his ap (nostril / picture: bull snorting) to the aratz (Earth/land), and amar (spoke), “barak (blessed) is Yahawah () your Alahayam (), who has sagar (delivered) up the anashayam (men) who lifted up their yad (hand) against my Adawan () the malak (king)!”

29 The malak (king) amar (said), “Is it shalawam (peace / safety) with the nair (young) man Abayashalawam (Absalom)?” Achayamaitz (Ahimaaz) amar (said), “When Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) shalach (send) the malak (king) ibad (servant), even me your ibad (servant), I raah (see / saw) a gadawal (very great/important/mighty) hamawan (tumult), but I don't yadai (know) what it was.”

30 The malak (king) amar (said), “sabab (turn) aside, and yatzab (stand) here.” He sabab (turned) aside, and imad (stood) still.

31 Behold, the Kawashay (Cushite) bawaa (come). The Kawashay (Cushite) amar (spoke), “News for my Adawan () the malak (king); for Yahawah () has shapat (judge / judgement) you this yawam (day) of all those who qawam (rise up) up against you.”

32 The malak (king) amar (spoke) to the Kawashay (Cushite), “Is it shalawam (peace / safety) with the nair (young) man Abayashalawam (Absalom)?” The Kawashay (Cushite) amar (spoke), “May the ayabay (enemies) of my Adawan () the malak (king), and all who qawam (rise up) up against you to do you rai (harm), be as that nair (young) man is.”

33 It was amar (spoke) Yawaab (Joab), "Behold, the malak (king) bakah (weeps) and bakah (mourns) for Abayashalawam (Absalom).
