Kings 18 — Novel English Bible

It happened after many yamayam (days), that the dabar (word / matter) of Yahawah () came to Alayah (Elijah), in the shalayashay (third) shanah (year), amar (spoke), “yalak (go), show yourself to Achaab (Ahab); and I will nathan (give) matar (rain) on the adamah (earth).”

Alayah (Elijah) yalak (went) to show himself to Achaab (Ahab). The raib (famine) was severe in Shamarawan (Samaria).

Achaab (Ahab) qaraa (called) Ibadayah (Obadiah), who was over the bayath (house). (Now Ibadayah (Obadiah) yaraa (feared) Yahawah () maad (greatly):

For it was so, when Ayazabal (Jezebel) karath (cut) off the nabayaay (prophets) of Yahawah (), that Ibadayah (Obadiah) laqach (take / seize) one maah (hundred) nabayaay (prophets), and chabaa (hid) them by ayash (man / husband) in a mairah (cave), and kawal (all) them with lacham (bread) and mayam (Waters).)

Achaab (Ahab) amar (said) to Ibadayah (Obadiah), “yalak (go) through the aratz (Earth/land), to all the maiyanay (springs) of mayam (Waters), and to all the nachalayam (brooks). Perhaps we may matzaa (find) chatzayar (grass) and chayah (save) the sawas (horses) and parad (mules) chayah (alive), that we not karath (cut) all the animals.”

So they chalaq (divided) the aratz (Earth/land) between them to ibar (pass over/through) throughout it: Achaab (Ahab) halak (move) achad (one) darak (way) by himself, and Ibadayah (Obadiah) halak (move) another darak (way) by himself.

As Ibadayah (Obadiah) was in the darak (way), behold, Alayah (Elijah) qaraah (met) him: and he recognized him, and napal (fall / be cast down) on his panayam (face), and amar (spoke), “Is it you, my Adawan () Alayah (Elijah)?”

He amar (spoke) him, “It is I. Yalak (go), amar (spoke) your Adawan (), ‘Behold, Alayah (Elijah) is here!’”

He amar (said), “Wherein have I chataa (sinned), that you nathan (give) deliver your ibad (servant) into the yad (hand) of Achaab (Ahab), to mawath (death) me?

As Yahawah () your Alahayam () chay (life), there is no gaway (heathen / nation) or mamalakah (kingdom), ashar (who/that) my Adawan () has not shalach (send) to baqash (seek) you. When they amar (spoke), ‘He is not here,’ he took an shabai (swear / take oath) of the mamalakah (kingdom) and gaway (heathen / nation), that they didn't matzaa (find) you.

Now you amar (spoke), ‘yalak (go), amar (spoke) your Adawan (), “Behold, Alayah (Elijah) is here.”’

It will happen, as soon as I am yalak (gone) from you, that the rawach (spirit / wind) of Yahawah () will nashaa (lift) you I don't yadai (know) where; and so when I bawaa (come) and nagad (tell) Achaab (Ahab), and he can't matzaa (find) you, he will harag (kill) me. But I, your ibad (servant), have yaraa (fear / be afraid) Yahawah () from my naiwar (youth).

Wasn't it nagad (told) my Adawan () what I ishah (make) when Ayazabal (Jezebel) harag (kill) the nabayaay (prophets) of Yahawah (), how I chabaa (hid) one maah (hundred) ayash (man / husband) of Yahawah () nabayaay (prophets) with chamashayam (fifty) to a mairah (cave), and kawal (all) them with lacham (bread) and mayam (Waters)?

Now you amar (spoke), ‘yalak (go), amar (spoke) your Adawan (), “Behold, Alayah (Elijah) is here”;’ and he will harag (kill) me.”

Alayah (Elijah) amar (spoke), “As Yahawah () of tzabaawath (armies) chay (life), panayam (face) whom I imad (stand), I will raah (see) show myself to him today.”

So Ibadayah (Obadiah) yalak (went) to qaraah (meet) Achaab (Ahab), and nagad (told) him; and Achaab (Ahab) yalak (went) to qaraah (meet) Alayah (Elijah).

It happened, when Achaab (Ahab) raah (see / saw) Alayah (Elijah), that Achaab (Ahab) amar (said) to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Yashar-Al (Israel)?”

He amar (spoke), “I have not ikar (troubled) Yashar-Al (Israel); but you, and your ab (father) bayath (house), in that you have forsaken the matzawath (commandments) of Yahawah (), and you have yalak (followed) the Bail (Baals).

Now therefore shalach (send), and qabatz (gather) to me all Yashar-Al (Israel) to har (mountain) Karamal (Carmel), and arabai (four) maah (hundred) chamashayam (fifty) of the nabayaay (prophets) of Bail (Baal), and arabai (four) maah (hundred) of the nabayaay (prophets) of the Asharah (Asherah), who akal (eat) at Ayazabal (Jezebel's) shalachan (table).”

So Achaab (Ahab) shalach (send) to all the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel), and qabatz (gathered) the nabayaayam (prophets) qabatz (together) to har (mountain) Karamal (Carmel).

Alayah (Elijah) nagash (came) near to all the im (nation / people), and amar (spoke), “How long will you waver between the shanayam (two) sides? If Yahawah () is Alahayam (), yalak (follow) him; but if Bail (Baal), then yalak (follow) him.” The im (nation / people) inah (answer / respond) him not a dabar (word / matter).

Then Alayah (Elijah) amar (spoke) to the im (nation / people), “I, even I only, am yathar (left) a nabayaa (prophet/prophecy) of Yahawah (); but Bail (Baal's) nabayaay (prophets) are arabai (four) maah (hundred) chamashayam (fifty) ayash (man / husband).

Nathan (give) them therefore give us shanayam (two) parayam (bulls); and let them bachar (choose) achad (one) par (bull) for themselves, and nathach (cut) it in pieces, and shawam (place / establish / appoint) it on the itz (wood), and shawam (place / establish / appoint) no ash (fire) under; and I will ishah (make) the other par (bull), and nathan (give) it on the itz (wood), and shawam (place / establish / appoint) no ash (fire) under it.

You qaraa (called) on the sham (name) of your Alahayam (), and I will qaraa (called) on the sham (name) of Yahawah (). The Alahayam () who inah (answer / respond) by ash (fire), let him be Alahayam ().” All the im (nation / people) inah (answer / respond), “It is tawab (good / proper function) inah (answer / respond).”

Alayah (Elijah) amar (spoke) to the nabayaay (prophets) of Bail (Baal), “bachar (choose) achad (one) par (bull) for yourselves, and ishah (make) it raashawan (first); for you are many; and qaraa (called) on the sham (name) of your Alahayam (), but shawam (place / establish / appoint) no ash (fire) under it.”

They laqach (take / seize) the par (bull) which was nathan (give) them, and they ishah (make) it, and qaraa (called) on the sham (name) of Bail (Baal) from baqar (morning) even until tzahar (noon), amar (said), “Bail (Baal), inah (answer / respond) us.” But there was no qawal (sound / voice), nor any who inah (answer / respond). They pasach (leaped) about the mazabach (altar) which was ishah (make).

It happened at tzahar (noon), that Alayah (Elijah) hathal (mocked) them, and amar (spoke), “qaraa (called) gadawal (very great/important/mighty); for he is a Alahayam (). Either he is musing, or he has gone aside, or he is on a darak (journey), or perhaps he sleeps and must be awakened.”

They qaraa (called) qawal (sound / voice), and gadad (cut) themselves in their mashapat (way) with knives and lances, until the dam (blood) shapak (gushed) out on them.

It was so, when tzahar (midday) was past, that they nabaa (prophesied) until the time of the ilah (go up / offer) of the ilah (go up / offer); but there was neither qawal (sound / voice), nor any to inah (answer / respond), nor any who qashab (regarded).

Alayah (Elijah) amar (spoke) to all the im (nation / people), “nagash (come) near to me;”; and all the im (nation / people) nagash (came) near to him. He rapaa (repaired) the mazabach (altar) of Yahawah () that was haras (thrown) down.

Alayah (Elijah) laqach (take / seize) shanayam (two) abanayam (stones), according to the masapar (number) of the shabatay (tribes) of the banay (sons) of Yaiqab (Jacob), to whom the dabar (word / matter) of Yahawah () came, amar (spoke), “Yashar-Al (Israel) shall be your sham (name).”

With the abanayam (stones) he banah (build) an mazabach (altar) in the sham (name) of Yahawah (). He ishah (make) a thailah (trench) around the mazabach (altar), large enough to bayath (house) two saathayam (measures) of zarai (seed).

He irak (put) the itz (wood) in irak (order), and nathach (cut) the par (bull) in pieces, and shawam (place / establish / appoint) it on the itz (wood). He said, “Fill four jars with water, and pour it on the burnt offering, and on the itz (wood).”

He amar (said), “Do it a shanah (second) time;” and they did it the shanah (second) time. He amar (said), “shanah (do) it a third time;” and they did it the shalash (three) time.

The mayam (Waters) yalak (ran) around the mazabach (altar); and he also malaa (filled) the thailah (trench) with mayam (Waters).

It happened at the time of the ilah (go up / offer) of the manachah (offering), that Alayah (Elijah) the nabayaa (prophet/prophecy) nagash (came) near, and amar (spoke), “Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of Abaraham (Abraham), of Yatzachaq (Isaac), and of Yashar-Al (Israel), yadai (let) it be known this yawam (day) that you are Alahayam () in Yashar-Al (Israel), and that I am your ibad (servant), and that I ishah (make) done all these things at your dabar (word / matter).

Inah (answer / respond) me, Yahawah (), inah (answer / respond) me, that this im (nation / people) may yadai (know) that you, Yahawah (), are Alahayam (), and that you have sabab (turned) their lab (heart) sabab (back) again.”

Then the ash (fire) of Yahawah () napal (fall / be cast down), and akal (eat) the burnt ilah (offering), and the itz (wood), and the abanayam (stones), and the ipar (dust), and lachak (licked) up the mayam (Waters) that was in the thailah (trench).

When all the im (nation / people) raah (see) it, they napal (fall / be cast down) on their panayam (face). They amar (spoke), “Yahawah (), he is Alahayam ()! Yahawah (), he is Alahayam ()!”

Alayah (Elijah) amar (said) to them, “Seize the nabayaay (prophets) of Bail (Baal)! Don't let ayash (man / husband) of them malat (escape)!” They seized them. Alayah (Elijah) yarad (brought) them down to the nachal (stream / river) Qayashawan (Kishon), and shachat (killed) them there.

Alayah (Elijah) amar (said) to Achaab (Ahab), “ilah (go up / offer) up, akal (eat) and shathah (drinks); for there is the qawal (sound / voice) of hamawan (abundance) of gasham (rain).”

So Achaab (Ahab) ilah (go up / offer) up to akal (eat) and to shathah (drinks). Alayah (Elijah) ilah (go up / offer) up to the raash (head) of Karamal (Carmel); and he bowed himself down on the aratz (Earth/land), and shawam (place / establish / appoint) his panayam (face) between his barak (blessed).

He amar (said) to his nair (servant), “ilah (go up / offer) up now, nabat (look) darak (toward) the yam (sea/waters).” He ilah (go up / offer) up, and nabat (looked), and amar (said), “There is maawamah (nothing).” He amar (said), “shawab (turn) again” shabai (seven) paimayam (times).

It happened at the shabayaiy (seventh) time, that he amar (said), “Behold, a qatan (small / young / least) ib (cloud), like a ayash (man / husband) kap (hand), is ilah (go up / offer) out of the yam (sea/waters).” He amar (said), “ilah (go up / offer) up, amar (said) Achaab (Ahab), ‘Get asar (ready) and yarad (go) down, so that the gasham (rain) doesn't itzar (stop) you.’”

It happened in a little kah (while), that the sky grew qadar (black) with ibayam (clouds) and rawach (spirit / wind), and there was a gadawal (very great/important/mighty) gasham (rain). Achaab (Ahab) rakab (rode), and yalak (went) to Yazaraial (Jezreel).

The yad (hand) of Yahawah () was on Alayah (Elijah); and he tucked his cloak into his belt and rawatz (ran) panayam (face) Achaab (Ahab) to the entrance of Yazaraial (Jezreel).
