Nehemiah 12 — Novel English Bible

1 Now these are the kahanayam (priests) and the Lawayay (Levites) who ilah (go up / offer) up with Zarababal (Zerubbabel) the ban (son) of Shaalathayaal (Shealtiel), and Yashawai (Jeshua): Sharayah (Seraiah), Yaramayah (Jeremiah), Izaraa (Ezra),

2 Amarayah (Amariah), Malawak (Malluch), Chatawash (Hattush),

3 Shakanayah (Shecaniah), Rachawam (Rehum), Maramawath (Meremoth),

4 Idaw (Iddo), Ganathawan (Ginnethoi), Abayah (Abijah),

5 Mayaman (Mijamin), Maidayah (Maadiah), Balagah (Bilgah),

6 Shamaiyah (Shemaiah), and Yawayarayab (Joiarib), Yadaiyah (Jedaiah).

7 Salaw (Sallu), Imawaq (Amok), Chalaqayah (Hilkiah), Yadaiyah (Jedaiah). These were the raashay (chiefs) of the kahanayam (priests) and of their ach (brother/kinsman) in the yamay (days) of Yashawai (Jeshua).

8 Moreover the Lawayay (Levites): Yashawai (Jeshua), Banaway (Binnui), Qadamayaal (Kadmiel), Sharabayah (Sherebiah), Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah), and Mathanayah (Mattaniah), who was over the hayadah (thanksgiving), he and his ach (brother/kinsman).

9 Also Baqabaqayah (Bakbukiah) and Inay (Unno), their ach (brother/kinsman), were over against them according to their mashamarawath (offices).

10 Yashawai (Jeshua) became the yalad (birth / begot) of Yawayaqayam (Joiakim), and Yawayaqayam (Joiakim) became the yalad (birth / begot) of Alayashayab (Eliashib), and Alayashayab (Eliashib) became the yalad (birth / begot) of Yawayadai (Joiada),

11 And Yawayadai (Joiada) became the yalad (birth / begot) of Yawanathan (Jonathan), and Yawanathan (Jonathan) became the yalad (birth / begot) of Yadawai (Jaddua).

12 In the yamay (days) of Yawayaqayam (Joiakim) were kahanayam (priests), raashay (heads) of abawath (fathers)’ households: of Sharayah (Seraiah), Marayah (Meraiah); of Yaramayah (Jeremiah), Chananayah (Hananiah);

13 Of Izaraa (Ezra), Mashalam (Meshullam); of Amarayah (Amariah), Yahawachanan (Jehohanan);

14 Of Malawak (Malluchi), Yawanathan (Jonathan); of Shabanayah (Shebaniah), Yawasap (Joseph);

15 Of Charam (Harim), Idanaa (Adna); of Marayawath (Meraioth), Chalaqay (Helkai);

16 Of Idaw (Iddo), Zakarayah (Zechariah); of Ganathawan (Ginnethon), Mashalam (Meshullam);

17 Of Abayah (Abijah), Zakaray (Zichri); of Manayamayan (Miniamin), of Mawaidayah (Moadiah), Palatay (Piltai);

18 Of Balagah (Bilgah), Shamawai (Shammua); of Shamaiyah (Shemaiah), Yahawanathan (Jehonathan);

19 And of Yawayarayab (Joiarib), Mathanay (Mattenai); of Yadaiyah (Jedaiah), Izay (Uzzi);

20 Of Salaw (Sallai), Qalay (Kallai); of Imawaq (Amok), Ibar (Eber);

21 Of Chalaqayah (Hilkiah), Chashabayah (Hashabiah); of Yadaiyah (Jedaiah), Nathanaal (Nethanel).

22 As for the Lawayay (Levites), in the yamay (days) of Alayashayab (Eliashib), Yawayadai (Joiada), and Yawachanan (Johanan), and Yadawai (Jaddua), there were kathab (write) the raashay (heads) of abawath (fathers)’ households; also the kahanayam (priests), in the malakawath (reign) of Darayawash (Darius) the Parasay (Persian).

23 The banay (my son) of Laway (Levi), raashay (heads) of abawath (fathers)’ households, were kathab (write) in the sapar (book / scribed document) of the dabaray (chronicles), even until the yamayam (days) of Yawachanan (Johanan) the ban (son) of Alayashayab (Eliashib).

24 The raashay (chiefs) of the Lawayay (Levites): Chashabayah (Hashabiah), Sharabayah (Sherebiah), and Yashawai (Jeshua) the ban (son) of Qadamayaal (Kadmiel), with their ach (brother/kinsman) over against them, to halal (praise) and halal (praise) thanks, according to the matzawah (commandment) of Dawad (David) the ayash (man / husband) of Alahayam (), mashamar (watch) next to mashamar (watch).

25 Mathanayah (Mattaniah), and Baqabaqayah (Bakbukiah), Ibadayah (Obadiah), Mashalam (Meshullam), Talamawan (Talmon), Iqawab (Akkub), were shawairayam (porters) shamar (keep/guard) the mashamar (watch) at the storehouses of the shairayam (gates).

26 These were in the yamay (days) of Yawayaqayam (Joiakim) the ban (son) of Yashawai (Jeshua), the ban (son) of Yawatzadaq (Jozadak), and in the yamay (days) of Nachamayah (Nehemiah) the pachah (governor), and of Izaraa (Ezra) the kahan (priest) the sapar (book).

27 At the chanakah (dedication) of the chawamah (wall) of Yarawashalam (Yarawashalam / Jerusalem) they baqash (sought) the Lawayay (Levites) out of all their maqawam (place), to bawaa (bring) them to Yarawashalam (Yarawashalam / Jerusalem), to ishah (make) the chanakah (dedication) with shamachah (gladness), both with thawadah (giving) thanks, and with shayar (song), with matzalathayam (cymbals), stringed instruments, and with kanarawath (harps).

28 The banay (my son) of the singers asap (gathered) themselves together, both out of the kakar (plain) around Yarawashalam (Yarawashalam / Jerusalem), and from the chatzaray (villages) of the Natapathay (Netophathites);

29 Also from Bayath (Beth) Galagal (Gilgal), and out of the shadawath (fields) of Gabai (Geba) and Izamawath (Azmaveth): for the singers had banah (build) them chatzarayam (villages) around Yarawashalam (Jerusalem).

30 The kahanayam (priests) and the Lawayay (Levites) tahar (purified) themselves; and they tahar (purified) the im (nation / people), and the shairayam (gates), and the chawamah (wall).

31 Then I ilah (go up / offer) up the sharay (princes) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah) on the chawamah (wall), and imad (appointed) shanayam (two) gadawal (very great/important/mighty) companies who gave thawadath (thanks) and thahalakah (went) in procession. One went on the right yamayan (right hand) on the chawamah (wall) toward the ashapath (dung) shair (gate);

32 And achar (other) them yalak (went) Hawashaiyah (Hoshaiah), and chatzay (half) of the sharay (princes) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah),

33 And Izarayah (Azariah), Izaraa (Ezra), and Mashalam (Meshullam),

34 Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah), and Banayamayan (Benjamin), and Shamaiyah (Shemaiah), and Yaramayah (Jeremiah),

35 And certain of the kahanayam (priests)’ banay (my son) with chatzatzarawath (trumpets): Zakarayah (Zechariah) the ban (son) of Yawanathan (Jonathan), the ban (son) of Shamaiyah (Shemaiah), the ban (son) of Mathanayah (Mattaniah), the ban (son) of Mayakayah (Micaiah), the ban (son) of Zakawar (remember/recall), the ban (son) of Asap (Asaph);

36 And his ach (brother/kinsman), Shamaiyah (Shemaiah), and Izaraal (Azarel), Malalay (Milalai), Galalay (Gilalai), Maiy (Maai), Nathanaal (Nethanel), and Yahawadah (Judah), Chananay (Hanani), with the shayar (song) kalay (instruments) of Dawad (David) the ayash (man / husband) of Alahayam (); and Izaraa (Ezra) the sapar (book) panayam (face) before them.

37 By the spring shair (gate), and straight before them, they ilah (go up / offer) up by the mailawath (stairs) of the iyar (city) of Dawad (David), at the mailah (ascent) of the chawamah (wall), above the bayath (house) of Dawad (David), even to the mayam (Waters) shair (gate) eastward.

38 The other company of those who gave thawadah (thanks) halak (move) to meet them, and I achar (other) them, with the chatzay (half) of the im (nation / people), on the chawamah (wall), above the magadal (tower) of the thanawarayam (furnaces), even to the rachab (broad) chawamah (wall),

39 And above the shair (gate) of Aparayam (Ephraim), and by the old shair (gate), and by the dag (fish) shair (gate), and the magadal (tower) of Chananaal (Hananel), and the magadal (tower) of Hammeah, even to the tzaan (sheep) shair (gate): and they imad (stood) still in the shair (gate) of the guard.

40 So imad (stood) the shanayam (two) companies of those who gave thawadath (thanks) in the bayath (house) of Alahayam (), and I, and the chatzay (half) of the saganayam (rulers) with me;

41 And the kahanayam (priests), Alayaqayam (Eliakim), Maishayah (Maaseiah), Manayamayan (Miniamin), Mayakayah (Micaiah), Alayahawaiyanay (Elioenai), Zakarayah (Zechariah), and Chananayah (Hananiah), with chatzatzarawath (trumpets);

42 And Maishayah (Maaseiah), and Shamaiyah (Shemaiah), and Alaizar (Eleazar), and Izay (Uzzi), and Yahawachanan (Jehohanan), and Malakayah (Malchijah), and Iyalam (Elam), and Izar (Ezer). The singers sang loud, with Yazarachayah (Jezrahiah) their paqayad (overseer).

43 They zabach (offered) gadawal (very great/important/mighty) zabachayam (sacrifices) that yawam (day), and shamach (rejoiced); for Alahayam () shamach (had) made them rejoice with gadawal (very great/important/mighty) shamachah (joy); and the nashayam (women) also and the yaladayam (children) shamach (rejoiced): so that the shamachah (joy) of Yarawashalam (Jerusalem) was shamai (hearken / hear) even rachawaq (afar) off.

44 On that yawam (day) were anashayam (men) paqad (visit) over the rooms for the awatzarawath (treasures), for the wave tharawamawath (offerings), for the raashayath (beginning) fruits, and for the maisharawath (tithes), to kanas (gather) into them, according to the shaday (fields) of the irayam (cities), the manaawath (portions) appointed by the thawarah (Torah / Instruction) for the kahanayam (priests) and Lawayay (Levites): for Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah) shamachah (rejoiced) for the kahanayam (priests) and for the Lawayay (Levites) who waited.

45 They performed the duty of their Alahayam (), and the duty of the taharah (purification), and so did the singers and the shairayam (porters), according to the matzawah (commandment) of Dawad (David), and of Shalamah (Solomon) his ban (son).

46 For in the yamay (days) of Dawad (David) and Asap (Asaph) of qadam (old) there was a raash (head) of the singers, and shayar (song) of thahalah (praise) and thanksgiving to Alahayam ().

47 All Yashar-Al (Israel) in the yamay (days) of Zarababal (Zerubbabel), and in the yamay (days) of Nachamayah (Nehemiah), nathan (give) the manayawath (portions) of the singers and the shairayam (porters), as every yawam (day) required: and they set apart that which was for the Lawayay (Levites); and the Lawayay (Levites) set apart that which was for the banay (my son) of Aharawan (Aaron).
