Deuteronomy 20 — Novel English Bible

When you yatzaa (go out / come out) forth to malachamah (battle) against your ayab (enemy), and raah (see) sawas (horses), rakab (chariots), and a im (nation / people) more than you, you shall not be yaraa (fear / be afraid) of them; for Yahawah () your Alahayam () is with you, who ilah (go up / offer) you up out of the aratz (Earth/land) of Matzarayam (Egypt).

It shall be, when you qarab (come close) near to the malachamah (battle), that the kahan (priest) shall nagash (approach) and dabar (word / matter) to the im (nation / people),

And shall amar (said) them, “shamai (hearken / hear), Yashar-Al (Israel), you qarab (draw) near this yawam (day) to malachamah (battle) against your ayab (enemy): don't let your labab (heart) rakak (faint); don't be yaraa (fear / be afraid), nor chapaz (tremble), neither be scared of them;

For Yahawah () your Alahayam () is he who halak (move) with you, to lacham (fight) for you against your ayab (enemy), to yashai (salvation) you.”

The shatarayam (officers) shall dabar (word / matter) to the im (nation / people), amar (said), “What ayash (man / husband) is there who has banah (build) a chadash (new) bayath (house), and has not chanak (dedicated) it? Yalak (let) him go and shawab (turn) to his bayath (house), lest he mawath (death) in the malachamah (battle), and achar (other) ayash (man / husband) chanak (dedicate) it.

What ayash (man / husband) is there who has natai (planted) a karam (vineyard), and has not used its fruit? Yalak (let) him go and shawab (turn) to his bayath (house), lest he mawath (death) in the malachamah (battle), and achar (other) ayash (man / husband) use its fruit.

What ayash (man / husband) is there who has pledged to be married a ayashah (woman / wife), and has not laqach (take / seize) her? Yalak (let) him go and shawab (turn) to his bayath (house), lest he mawath (death) in the malachamah (battle), and achar (other) ayash (man / husband) laqach (take / seize) her.”

The shatarayam (officers) shall dabar (word / matter) yasap (further) to the im (nation / people), and they shall amar (said), “What ayash (man / husband) is there who is yaraa (fearful) and rak (fainthearted)? Yalak (let) him go and shawab (turn) to his bayath (house), lest his ach (brother/kinsman) labab (heart) masas (melt) as his labab (heart).”

It shall be, when the shatarayam (officers) kalah (complete / finish) made an end of dabar (word / matter) to the im (nation / people), that they shall paqad (visit) sharay (captains) of tzabaawath (armies) at the raash (head) of the im (nation / people).

When you qarab (come close) near to a iyar (city) to lacham (fight) against it, then qaraa (called) shalawam (peace / safety) to it.

It shall be, if it makes you inah (answer / respond) of shalawam (peace / safety), and pathach (opens) to you, then it shall be, that all the im (nation / people) who are matzaa (found) therein shall become mas (tributary) to you, and shall ibad (servant) you.

If it will make no shalam (peace) with you, but will ishah (make) malachamah (war) against you, then you shall tzawar (besiege) it:

And when Yahawah () your Alahayam () nathan (give) it into your yad (hand), you shall nakah (strike) every zakawar (remember/recall) of it with the pah (edge) of the charab (sword):

But the nashayam (women), and the little tap (ones), and the livestock, and all that is in the iyar (city), even all its shalal (spoil), you shall bazaz (take) for a prey to yourself; and you shall akal (eat) the shalal (spoil) of your ayab (enemy), which Yahawah () your Alahayam () nathan (give) given you.

Thus you shall ishah (make) to all the irayam (cities) which are very rachawaq (far) off from you, which are not of the irayam (cities) of these gawayam (heathen).

But of the iray (cities) of these imayam (peoples), that Yahawah () your Alahayam () nathan (give) you for an nachalah (inheritance), you shall chayah (save) alive nothing that breathes;

But you shall charam (utterly) charam (destroy) them: the Chathay (Hittite), and the Amaray (Amorite), the Kanainay (Canaanite), and the Parazay (Perizzite), the Chaway (Hivite), and the Yabawasay (Jebusite); as Yahawah () your Alahayam () has tzawah (commanded) you;

That they not lamad (teach / instruct) you to ishah (make) after all their thawaibah (abominations), which they ishah (make) done to their Alahayam (); so would you chataa (sin) against Yahawah () your Alahayam ().

When you shall tzawar (besiege) a iyar (city) a rab (long) yawam (day), in making lacham (war) against it to thapash (take) it, you shall not shachath (destroy) its itz (trees) by wielding an axe against them; for you may akal (eat) of them, and you shall not karath (cut) them down; for is the itz (tree) of the shadah (field) adam (man), that it should be besieged of you?

Only the itz (trees) of which you yadai (know) that they are not itz (trees) for maakal (food), you shall shachath (destroy) and karath (cut) them down; and you shall banah (build) matzawar (bulwarks) against the iyar (city) that ishah (make) malachamah (war) with you, until it yarad (fall).
