Joshua 8 — Novel English Bible

Yahawah () amar (spoke) to Yahawashawai (Joshua), “Don't be yaraa (fear / be afraid), neither be chathath (dismayed). Laqach (take / seize) all the im (nation / people) of malachamah (war) with you, and qawam (rise up), ilah (go up / offer) up to Iy (Ai). Raah (see), I nathan (give) given into your yad (hand) the malak (king) of Iy (Ai), with his im (nation / people), his iyar (city), and his aratz (Earth/land).

You shall ishah (make) to Iy (Ai) and her malak (king) as you ishah (make) to Yarayachaw (Jericho) and her malak (king), except its shalal (spoil) and its livestock, you shall bazaz (take) for a plunder for yourselves. Shawam (place / establish / appoint) an arab (ambush) for the iyar (city) achar (other) it.”

So Yahawashawai (Joshua) qawam (rise up), and all the im (nation / people) of malachamah (war), to ilah (go up / offer) up to Iy (Ai). Yahawashawai (Joshua) bachar (chose) shalawashayam (thirty) alap (thousand) men, the gabawar (mighty) ayash (man / husband) of valor, and shalach (send) them out by layal (night).

He tzawah (commanded) them, amar (said), “raah (see / saw), you shall lie in arab (ambush) against the iyar (city), achar (other) the iyar (city). Don't rachaq (go) very rachaq (far) from the iyar (city), but all of you be kawan (ready).

I, and all the im (nation / people) who are with me, will qarab (come close) to the iyar (city). It shall happen, when they yatzaa (go out / come out) out qaraah (against) us, as at the raashawan (first), that we will nawas (flee) panayam (face) them.

They will yatzaa (go out / come out) out achar (other) us, until we have nathaq (drawn) them away from the iyar (city); for they will amar (said), ‘They nawas (flee) panayam (face) us, like the raashawan (first) time.’ So we will nawas (flee) panayam (face) them,

And you shall qawam (rise up) up from the arab (ambush), and take yarash (possession) of the iyar (city); for Yahawah () your Alahayam () will nathan (give) it into your yad (hand).

It shall be, when you have seized on the iyar (city), that you shall yatzath (set) the iyar (city) on ash (fire). You shall ishah (make) this according to the dabar (word / matter) of Yahawah (). Raah (see), I have tzawah (commanded) you.”

Yahawashawai (Joshua) shalach (send) them out; and they yalak (went) to set up the maarab (ambush), and stayed between Bayath-Al (Bethel) and Iy (Ai), on the yam (sea/waters) side of Iy (Ai); but Yahawashawai (Joshua) stayed thawak (midst) the im (nation / people) that layal (night).

Yahawashawai (Joshua) shakam (rose) up early in the baqar (morning), mustered the im (nation / people), and ilah (go up / offer) up, he and the zaqanay (elders) of Yashar-Al (Israel), panayam (face) the im (nation / people) to Iy (Ai).

All the im (nation / people), even the men of malachamah (war) who were with him, ilah (go up / offer) up, and nagash (drew) near, and bawaa (bring) before the iyar (city), and chanah (encamped) on the tzapawan (north) side of Iy (Ai). Now there was a gayaa (valley) between him and Iy (Ai).

He laqach (take / seize) about chamash (five) alap (thousand) ayash (man / husband), and shawam (place / establish / appoint) them in arab (ambush) between Bayath-Al (Bethel) and Iy (Ai), on the yam (sea/waters) side of the Iy (city).

So they shawam (place / establish / appoint) the im (nation / people), even all the machanah (army) who was on the tzapawan (north) of the iyar (city), and their ambush on the yam (sea/waters) of the iyar (city); and Yahawashawai (Joshua) yalak (went) that layal (night) into the thawak (midst) of the imaq (valley).

It happened, when the malak (king) of Iy (Ai) raah (see / saw) it, that they hurried and shakam (rose) up early, and the anashay (men) of the iyar (city) yatzaa (go out / come out) out qaraah (against) Yashar-Al (Israel) to malachamah (battle), he and all his im (nation / people), at the mawaid (Feast/Holy Day) appointed, panayam (face) the irabah (arabah); but he didn't yadai (know) that there was an arab (ambush) against him achar (other) the iyar (city).

Yahawashawai (Joshua) and all Yashar-Al (Israel) made as if they were nagai (beaten) panayam (face) them, and nawas (fled) by the darak (way) of the madabar (wilderness).

All the im (nation / people) who were in the Iyar (city) were zaiq (called) together to radap (pursue) achar (other) them. They radap (pursued) Yahawashawai (Joshua), and were nathaq (drawn) away from the iyar (city).

There was not a ayash (man / husband) shaar (left) in Iy (Ai) or Bayath-Al (Beth El) who didn't yatzaa (go out / come out) out achar (other) Yashar-Al (Israel). They izab (left) the iyar (city) pathach (open), and radap (pursued) Yashar-Al (Israel).

Yahawah () amar (spoke) to Yahawashawai (Joshua), “natah (stretch) out the javelin that is in your yad (hand) toward Iy (Ai), for I will nathan (give) it into your yad (hand).” Yahawashawai (Joshua) natah (stretched) out the javelin that was in his yad (hand) toward the iyar (city).

The arab (ambush) qawam (rise up) maharah (quickly) out of their maqawam (place), and they rawatz (ran) as soon as he had natah (stretched) out his yad (hand), and bawaa (bring) into the iyar (city), and lakad (took) it. They hurried and yatzath (set) the iyar (city) on ash (fire).

When the anashay (men) of Iy (Ai) panah (turn) achar (other) them, they saw, and behold, the ishan (smoke) of the iyar (city) ilah (go up / offer) up to shamayam (Shamayam / Heavens), and they had no yad (hand) to nawas (flee) this hanah (Behold) or that way. The im (nation / people) who nawas (fled) to the madabar (wilderness) hapak (turned) back on the radap (pursuers).

When Yahawashawai (Joshua) and all Yashar-Al (Israel) raah (see / saw) that the arab (ambush) had lakad (taken) the iyar (city), and that the ishan (smoke) of the iyar (city) ilah (go up / offer), then they shawab (turn) again, and nakah (killed) the anashay (men) of Iy (Ai).

The others yatzaa (go out / come out) out of the iyar (city) qaraah (against) them, so they were in the thawak (midst) of Yashar-Al (Israel), some on this side, and some on that side. They nakah (struck) them, so that they shaar (let) none of them sharayad (remain) or palayat (escape).

They captured the malak (king) of Iy (Ai) chay (life), and qarab (come close) him to Yahawashawai (Joshua).

It happened, when Yashar-Al (Israel) kalah (complete / finish) made an end of harag (kill) all the yashabay (inhabitants) of Iy (Ai) in the shadah (field), in the madabar (wilderness) in which they radap (pursued) them, and they napal (fall / be cast down) all fallen by the pah (edge) of the charab (sword), until they were thamam (consumed), that all Yashar-Al (Israel) shawab (turn) to Iy (Ai), and nakah (struck) it with the pah (edge) of the charab (sword).

All that napal (fall / be cast down) that yawam (day), both of anashay (men) and ayashah (woman / wife), were shanayam (two) alap (thousand), even all the anashay (men) of Iy (Ai).

For Yahawashawai (Joshua) didn't shawab (turn) shawab (turn) his yad (hand), with which he natah (stretched) out the javelin, until he charam (had) utterly destroyed all the yashabay (inhabitants) of Iy (Ai).

Only the livestock and the shalal (spoil) of that iyar (city) Yashar-Al (Israel) bazaz (took) for prey to themselves, according to the dabar (word / matter) of Yahawah () which he tzawah (commanded) Yahawashawai (Joshua).

So Yahawashawai (Joshua) burnt Iy (Ai), and shawam (place / establish / appoint) it a thal (heap) iwalam (eternity), even a shamamah (desolation), to this yawam (day).

He hanged the malak (king) of Iy (Ai) on a itz (tree) until the ith (evening), and at the sundown Yahawashawai (Joshua) tzawah (commanded), and they yarad (took) his nabalah (body) down from the itz (tree), and shalak (threw) it at the pathach (entrance) of the shair (gate) of the iyar (city), and qawam (rise up) a gadawal (very great/important/mighty) gal (heap) of abanayam (stones) on it that remains to this yawam (day).

Then Yahawashawai (Joshua) banah (build) an mazabach (altar) to Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of Yashar-Al (Israel), in har (mountain) Iyabal (Ebal),

As Mashah (Moses) the ibad (servant) of Yahawah () tzawah (commanded) the banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel), as it is kathab (write) in the sapar (book / scribed document) of the thawarah (instruction) of Mashah (Moses), an mazabach (altar) of uncut abanayam (stones), on which no man had nawap (lifted) up any barazal (iron). They ilah (go up / offer) burnt ilawath (offerings) on it to Yahawah (), and zabach (sacrificed) peace ilawath (offerings).

He kathab (write) there on the abanayam (stones) a mashanah (copy) of the thawarah (Torah / Instruction) of Mashah (Moses)’, which he kathab (write) in the panayam (face) of the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel).

All Yashar-Al (Israel), and their zaqan (elders) and shatarayam (officers), and their shapat (judge / judgement), imad (stood) on this side of the arawan (ark) and on that side before the kahanayam (priests) the Lawayay (Levites), who nashaa (lift) the arawan (ark) of Yahawah () barayath (covenant), the foreigner as well as the native; chatzay (half) of them in mawal (front) of har (mountain) Garazayam (Gerizim), and chatzay (half) of them in mawal (front) of har (mountain) Iyabal (Ebal), as Mashah (Moses) the ibad (servant) of Yahawah () had tzawah (commanded) at the raashawan (first), that they should barak (blessed) the im (nation / people) of Yashar-Al (Israel).

Afterward he qaraa (called) all the dabaray (words) of the thawarah (Torah / Instruction), the barakah (blessing) and the qalalah (curse), according to all that is kathab (write) in the sapar (book / scribed document) of the thawarah (Torah / Instruction).

There was not a dabar (word / matter) of all that Mashah (Moses) tzawah (commanded), which Yahawashawai (Joshua) didn't qaraa (called) before all the qahal (assembly) of Yashar-Al (Israel), with the nashayam (women), the little tap (ones), and the foreigners who were qarab (among / near) them.
