Judges 19 — Novel English Bible

It happened in those yamayam (days), when there was no malak (king) in Yashar-Al (Israel), that there was a ayash (man / husband) Lawayay (Levite) living on the farther yarakah (side) of the har (mountain) country of Aparayam (Ephraim), who laqach (take / seize) to him a concubine out of Bayath-Lacham (Bethlehem Judah).

His payalagash (concubine) zanah (played) the prostitute against him, and yalak (went) away from him to her ab (father) bayath (house) to Bayath-Lacham (Bethlehem Judah), and was there the space of arabai (four) chadashayam (months).

Her ayash (man / husband) qawam (rise up), and yalak (went) achar (other) her, to dabar (word / matter) lab (heart) to her, to shawab (turn) her again, having his nair (servant) with him, and a tzamad (couple) of donkeys: and she bawaa (bring) him into her ab (father) bayath (house); and when the ab (father) of the nairah (young) lady raah (see / saw) him, he shamach (rejoiced) to qaraah (meet) him.

His father-in-law, the nairah (young) lady's ab (father), chazaq (retained) him; and he stayed with him shalawash (three) yamayam (days): so they akal (eat) and shathah (drinks), and lawan (lodged) there.

It happened on the rabayaiy (fourth) yawam (day), that they arose shakam (early) in the baqar (morning), and he qawam (rise up) up to depart: and the nairah (young) lady's ab (father) amar (said) to his son-in-law, “said (strengthen) your lab (heart) with a path (morsel) of lacham (bread), and afterward you shall go your yalak (way).”

So they yashab (inhabit/dwell) down, akal (eat), and shathah (drinks), shanayam (two) of them yachad (together): and the nairah (young) lady's ab (father) amar (said) to the ayash (man / husband), “yaal (please) be pleased to stay all lawan (night), and let your lab (heart) be yatab (merry).”

The ayash (man / husband) qawam (rise up) up to depart; but his father-in-law patzar (urged) him, and he lawan (lodged) there again.

He arose shakam (early) in the baqar (morning) on the chamayashay (fifth) yawam (day) to depart; and the nairah (young) lady's ab (father) amar (said), Please “said (strengthen) your labab (heart) and mahah (stay) until the yawam (day) declines;” and they shanayam (two) akal (eat).

When the ayash (man / husband) qawam (rise up) up to depart, he, and his payalagash (concubine), and his nair (servant), his father-in-law, the nairah (young) lady's ab (father), amar (said) to him, “Behold, now the yawam (day) rapah (draws) toward irab (evening), please stay all lawan (night): behold, the yawam (day) chanah (grows) to an end, lawan (lodge) here, that your labab (heart) may be yatab (merry); and machar (tomorrow) go on your darak (way) shakam (early), that you may halak (move) ahal (home).”

But the ayash (man / husband) wouldn't stay that lawan (night), but he qawam (rise up) up and departed, and bawaa (bring) over nakach (against) Yabawas (Jebus) (the same is Yarawashalam (Yarawashalam / Jerusalem)): and there were with him a tzamad (couple) of donkeys chabash (saddled); his payalagash (concubine) also was with him.

When they were by Yabawas (Jebus), the yawam (day) was maad (far) radad (spent); and the nair (servant) amar (said) to his adawan (master / lord), “Please yalak (come) and let us sawar (turn) aside into this iyar (city) of the Yabawasay (Jebusites), and lawan (lodge) in it.”

His adawan (master / lord) amar (said) to him, “We won't sawar (turn) aside into the iyar (city) of a nakaray (foreigner), that is not of the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel); but we will ibar (pass over/through) over to Gabaih (Gibeah).”

He amar (said) to his nair (servant), “yalak (come) and let us qarab (come close) near to achad (one) of these maqamawath (places); and we will lawan (lodge) in Gabaih (Gibeah), or in Ramah (Ramah).”

So they ibar (pass over/through) on and went their yalak (way); and the shamash (sun) bawaa (bring) down on them atzal (near) to Gabaih (Gibeah), which belongs to Banayamayan (Benjamin).

They sawar (turned) aside there, to bawaa (bring) in to lawan (lodge) in Gabaih (Gibeah): and he bawaa (bring) in, and yashab (inhabit/dwell) him down in the rachab (street) of the iyar (city); for there was no ayash (man / husband) who asap (took) them into his bayath (house) to lawan (lodge).

Behold, there bawaa (bring) an zaqan (old) ayash (man / husband) from his maishah (work) out of the shadah (field) at irab (evening): now the ayash (man / husband) was of the har (mountain) country of Aparayam (Ephraim), and he lived in Gabaih (Gibeah); but the anashay (men) of the maqawam (place) were Banayamayanay (Benjamites).

He nashaa (lift) up his iyan (eye), and raah (see / saw) the arach (wayfaring) ayash (man / husband) in the rachab (street) of the iyar (city); and the zaqan (old) ayash (man / husband) amar (said), “Where are you yalak (going)? Ayan (NO ONE) did you bawaa (bring) from?”

He amar (spoke) to him, “We are ibar (pass over/through) from Bayath-Lacham (Bethlehem Judah) to the farther yarakah (side) of the har (mountain) country of Aparayam (Ephraim). I am from there, and I yalak (went) to Bayath-Lacham (Bethlehem Judah). I am halak (move) to the bayath (house) of Yahawah (); and there is no ayash (man / husband) who asap (takes) me into his bayath (house).

Yet there is both thaban (straw) and masapawaa (provender) for our donkeys; and there is lacham (bread) and yayan (wine) also for me, and for your handmaid, and for the nair (young) man who is with your ibad (servant): there is no machasawar (want) of anything.”

The zaqan (old) ayash (man / husband) amar (said), “shalawam (peace / safety) be to you; raq (concept: what comes out / spittle) let all your machasawar (wants) lawan (lie) on me; only don't lodge in the rachab (street).”

So he bawaa (bring) him into his bayath (house), and gave the donkeys fodder; and they rachatz (washed) their ragal (feet / foot), and akal (eat) and shathah (drinks).

As they were making their lab (heart) yatab (merry), behold, the anashay (men) of the iyar (city), ayash (man / husband) base anashay (fellows), surrounded the bayath (house), dapaq (beating) at the dalath (door); and they amar (said) to the bail (master) of the bayath (house), the zaqan (old) ayash (man / husband), amar (said), “yatzaa (go out / come out) out the ayash (man / husband) who bawaa (bring) into your bayath (house), that we may yadai (have) sex with him!”

The ayash (man / husband), the bail (master) of the bayath (house), yatzaa (go out / come out) out to them, and amar (said) to them, “No, my ach (brother/kinsman), please don't act so wickedly; achar (other) this ayash (man / husband) bawaa (bring) come into my bayath (house), don't ishah (make) this nabalah (folly).

Behold, here is my bathawalah (virgin) banath (daughter) and his payalagash (concubine). I will yatzaa (go out / come out) them out now. Inah (answer / respond) them, and ishah (make) with them what seems tawab (good / proper function) to you; but to this ayash (man / husband) don't ishah (make) any such nabalah (folly).”

But the anashayam (men) wouldn't shamai (hearken / hear) to him: so the ayash (man / husband) laid hold of his payalagash (concubine), and yatzaa (go out / come out) her out to them; and they yadai (had) sex with her, and ilal (abused) her all layal (night) until the baqar (morning): and when the shachar (day) began to ilah (go up / offer), they shalach (send) her go.

Then bawaa (come) the ayashah (woman / wife) in the panah (turn) of the baqar (morning), and napal (fall / be cast down) down at the pathach (door) of the ayash (man / husband) bayath (house) where her Adawan () was, until it was awar (light).

Her Adawan () qawam (rise up) up in the baqar (morning), and pathach (opened) the dalathawath (doors) of the bayath (house), and yatzaa (go out / come out) out to yalak (go) his darak (way); and behold, the ayashah (woman / wife) his payalagash (concubine) was napal (fall / be cast down) down at the pathach (door) of the bayath (house), with her yad (hand) on the sap (threshold).

He amar (said) to her, “qawam (rise up) up, and yalak (let) us be going!” But no ayash (man / husband) inah (answer / respond). Then he laqach (take / seize) her up on the donkey; and the ayash (man / husband) qawam (rise up) up, and went to his maqawam (place).

When he bawaa (bring) come into his bayath (house), he laqach (take / seize) a maakalath (knife), and laid chazaq (hold) on his payalagash (concubine), and nathach (divided) her, limb by limb, into shanayam (two) nathachayam (pieces), and shalach (send) her throughout all the gabawal (border/boundary) of Yashar-Al (Israel).

It was so, that all who raah (see / saw) it amar (said), “There was no such deed done nor raah (see / saw) from the yawam (day) that the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) ilah (go up / offer) up out of the aratz (Earth/land) of Matzarayam (Matzarayam / Egypt) to this yawam (day)! Shawam (place / establish / appoint) it, iwatz (take) counsel, and dabar (word / matter).”
