Judges 20 — Novel English Bible

Then all the banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel) yatzaa (go out / come out) out, and the idah (congregation) was qahal (assembled) as achad (one) ayash (man / husband), from Dan (Dan) even to Baar-Shabai (Beersheba), with the aratz (Earth/land) of Galaid (Gilead), to Yahawah () at Matzapah (Mizpah).

The panawath (chiefs) of all the im (nation / people), even of all the shabatay (tribes) of Yashar-Al (Israel), yatzab (presented) themselves in the qahal (assembly) of the im (nation / people) of Alahayam (), arabai (four) maah (hundred) alap (thousand) footmen who shalap (drew) charab (sword).

(Now the banay (my son) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) shamai (hearken / hear) that the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) had ilah (go up / offer) up to Matzapah (Mizpah).) The banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) amar (said), “dabar (word / matter) us, how hayah (came to pass) this rai (wickedness) happen?”

The Lawayay (Levite), the ayash (man / husband) of the ayashah (woman / wife) who was ratzach (murdered), inah (answer / respond), “I bawaa (bring) into Gabaih (Gibeah) that belongs to Banayamayan (Benjamin), I and my payalagash (concubine), to lawan (lodge).

The bailay (men) of Gabaih (Gibeah) qawam (rise up) against me, and surrounded the bayath (house) by layal (night). They damah (thought) to have harag (kill) me, and they inah (answer / respond) my payalagash (concubine), and she is mawath (death).

I achaz (took) my payalagash (concubine), and nathach (cut) her in pieces, and shalach (send) her throughout all the shadah (country) of the nachalah (inheritance) of Yashar-Al (Israel); for they ishah (make) committed lewdness and nabalah (folly) in Yashar-Al (Israel).

Behold, you banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel), all of you, yahab (give) here your dabar (word / matter) and itzah (counsel).”

All the im (nation / people) qawam (rise up) as achad (one) ayash (man / husband), amar (said), “ayash (man / husband) of us will yalak (go) to his ahal (tent), neither will any of us sawar (turn) to his bayath (house).

But now this is the thing which we will ishah (make) to Gabaih (Gibeah): we will go up against it by gawaral (lot);

And we will laqach (take / seize) ishar (ten) anashayam (men) of one maah (hundred) throughout all the shabatay (tribes) of Yashar-Al (Israel), and one maah (hundred) of one alap (thousand), and a alap (thousand) out of rababah (ten) thousand, to laqach (take / seize) food for the im (nation / people), that they may ishah (make), when they bawaa (bring) to Gabai (Gibeah) of Banayamayan (Benjamin), according to all the nabalah (folly) that they ishah (make) worked in Yashar-Al (Israel).”

So all the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) were asap (gathered) against the iyar (city), chabar (knit) together as achad (one) ayash (man / husband).

The shabatay (tribes) of Yashar-Al (Israel) shalach (send) anashayam (men) through all the shabat (tribe) of Banayamayan (Benjamin), amar (said), “What rai (wickedness) is this that is hayah (came to pass) among you?

Now therefore nathan (give) up the anashayam (men), the base fellows, who are in Gabaih (Gibeah), that we may put them to mawath (death), and bair (put) away rai (evil) from Yashar-Al (Israel).” But Banayamayan (Benjamin) would not shamai (hearken / hear) to the qawal (sound / voice) of their ach (brother/kinsman) the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel).

The banay (my son) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) asap (gathered) themselves together out of the irayam (cities) to Gabaih (Gibeah), to yatzaa (go out / come out) out to malachamah (battle) against the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel).

The banay (my son) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) were paqad (visit) on that yawam (day) out of the irayam (cities) isharayam (twenty) - shash (six) alap (thousand) ayash (man / husband) who shalap (drew) the charab (sword), besides the yashabay (inhabitants) of Gabaih (Gibeah), who were paqad (visit) shabai (seven) maah (hundred) bachar (chosen) ayash (man / husband).

Among all this im (nation / people) there were shabai (seven) maah (hundred) bachar (chosen) ayash (man / husband) yad (hand); everyone could qalai (sling) aban (stone) at a hair-breadth, and not chataa (miss).

The ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel), besides Banayamayan (Benjamin), were paqad (visit) arabai (four) maah (hundred) alap (thousand) ayash (man / husband) who shalap (drew) charab (sword): all these were ayash (man / husband) of malachamah (war).

The banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel) qawam (rise up), and went up to Al (Bethel), and shaal (asked) counsel of Alahayam (); and they amar (spoke), “Who shall ilah (go up / offer) up for us thachalah (first) to malachamah (battle) against the banay (children) of Banayamayan (Benjamin)?” Yahawah () amar (spoke), “Yahawadah (Judah) thachalah (first).”

The banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) qawam (rise up) up in the baqar (morning), and chanah (encamped) against Gabaih (Gibeah).

The ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) yatzaa (go out / come out) out to malachamah (battle) against Banayamayan (Benjamin); and the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) set the malachamah (battle) in irak (array) against them at Gabaih (Gibeah).

The banay (my son) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) yatzaa (go out / come out) forth out of Gabaih (Gibeah), and shachath (destroyed) down to the aratz (Earth/land) of the Yashar-Al (Israelites) on that yawam (day) isharayam (twenty) - shanayam (two) alap (thousand) ayash (man / husband).

The im (nation / people), the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel), chazaq (encouraged) themselves, and set the malachamah (battle) again in irak (array) in the maqawam (place) where they irak (set) themselves in array the raashawan (first) yawam (day).

The banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel) ilah (go up / offer) up and bakah (wept) panayam (face) Yahawah () until irab (evening); and they shaal (asked) of Yahawah (), amar (spoke), “Shall I again nagash (draw) near to malachamah (battle) against the banay (children) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) my ach (brother/kinsman)?” Yahawah () amar (spoke), “ilah (go up / offer) up against him.”

The banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) qarab (come close) near against the banay (my son) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) the shanay (second) yawam (day).

Banayamayan (Benjamin) yatzaa (go out / come out) forth qaraah (against) them out of Gabaih (Gibeah) the shanay (second) yawam (day), and shachath (destroyed) down to the aratz (Earth/land) of the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) again eighteen alap (thousand) ayash (man / husband); all these shalap (drew) the charab (sword).

Then all the banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel), and all the im (nation / people), ilah (go up / offer) up, and bawaa (come) to Al (Bethel), and bakah (wept), and yashab (inhabit/dwell) there panayam (face) Yahawah (), and tzawam (fasted) that yawam (day) until irab (evening); and they ilah (go up / offer) burnt ilawath (offerings) and peace ilawath (offerings) panayam (face) Yahawah ().

The banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) shaal (asked) of Yahawah (for the arawan (ark) of the barayath (covenant) of Alahayam was there in those yamayam (days),

And Payanachas (Phinehas), the ban (son) of Alaizar (Eleazar), the ban (son) of Aharawan (Aaron), imad (stood) panayam (face) it in those yamayam (days)), amar (spoke), “Shall I yet again yatzaa (go out / come out) out to malachamah (battle) against the banay (children) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) my ach (brother/kinsman), or shall I chadal (cease)?” Yahawah () amar (spoke), “ilah (go up / offer) up; for machar (tomorrow) I will nathan (give) him into your yad (hand).”

Yashar-Al (Israel) shawam (place / establish / appoint) ambushes all around Gabaih (Gibeah).

The banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) ilah (go up / offer) up against the banay (my son) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) on the shalayashay (third) yawam (day), and irak (set) themselves in array against Gabaih (Gibeah), as at other paim (times).

The banay (children) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) yatzaa (go out / come out) out qaraah (against) the im (nation / people), and were nathaq (drawn) away from the iyar (city); and they chalal (began) to nakah (strike) and chalal (kill) of the im (nation / people), as at other paim (times), in the masalawath (highways), of which achad (one) ilah (go up / offer) up to Al (Bethel), and the other to Gabaih (Gibeah), in the shadah (field), about shalawashayam (thirty) ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel).

The banay (my son) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) amar (said), “They are nagap (struck) down panayam (face) us, as at the raashawan (first).” But the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) amar (said), “Let us nawas (flee), and nathaq (draw) them away from the iyar (city) to the masalawath (highways).”

All the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) qawam (rise up) up out of their maqawam (place), and irak (set) themselves in array at Bailathamar (Baal Tamar): and the ambushers of Yashar-Al (Israel) gayach (broke) forth out of their maqawam (place), even out of Mairah (Maareh) Gabai (Geba).

There bawaa (bring) over nagad (against) Gabaih (Gibeah) ishar (ten) alap (thousand) bachar (chosen) ayash (man / husband) out of all Yashar-Al (Israel), and the malachamah (battle) was severe; but they didn't yadai (know) that rai (evil) was close on them.

Yahawah () nagap (struck) Banayamayan (Benjamin) panayam (face) Yashar-Al (Israel); and the banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel) shachath (destroyed) of banayamayan (benjamin) that yawam (day) isharayam (twenty) - chamash (five) alap (thousand) one maah (hundred) ayash (man / husband): all these shalap (drew) the charab (sword).

So the banay (my son) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) raah (see / saw) that they were nagap (struck); for the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) nathan (give) maqawam (place) to banayamayan (benjamin), because they batach (trusted) the ambushers whom they had shawam (place / establish / appoint) against Gabaih (Gibeah).

The ambushers hurried, and pashat (rushed) on Gabaih (Gibeah); and the ambushers mashak (drew) themselves along, and nakah (struck) all the iyar (city) with the pah (edge) of the charab (sword).

Now the appointed mawaid (Feast/Holy Day) between the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) and the ambushers was that they should rabah (make) a great cloud of ishan (smoke) ilah (go up / offer) up out of the iyar (city).

The ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) hapak (turned) in the malachamah (battle), and Banayamayan (Benjamin) chalal (began) to nakah (strike) and chalal (kill) of the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) about shalawashayam (thirty) ayash (man / husband); for they amar (said), “nagap (surely) they are nagap (struck) down panayam (face) us, as in the raashawan (first) malachamah (battle).”

But when the cloud chalal (began) to arise up out of the iyar (city) in a imawad (pillar) of ishan (smoke), the Banayamayanay (Benjamites) panah (turn) achar (other) them; and behold, the whole of the iyar (city) ilah (go up / offer) up in kalayal (smoke) to the sky.

The ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) hapak (turned), and the ayash (man / husband) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) were bahal (dismayed); for they raah (see / saw) that rai (evil) had nagai (come) on them.

Therefore they panah (turn) their backs panayam (face) the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) to the darak (way) of the madabar (wilderness); but the malachamah (battle) dabaq (followed) hard after them; and those who came out of the irayam (cities) shachath (destroyed) them in its thawak (midst).

They surrounded the Banayamayanay (Benjamites), radap (chased) them, and darak (trod) them down at their manawachah (resting) place, as far as over nakach (against) Gabaih (Gibeah) toward the sunrise.

There napal (fall / be cast down) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) eighteen alap (thousand) anashay (men); all these were anashay (men) of valor.

They panah (turn) and nawas (fled) toward the madabar (wilderness) to the salai (rock) of Ramawan (Rimmon): and they ilal (gleaned) of them in the masalawath (highways) chamash (five) alap (thousand) ayash (man / husband), and dabaq (followed) hard achar (other) them to Gadaim (Gidom), and nakah (struck) of them two alap (thousand) ayash (man / husband).

So that all who napal (fall / be cast down) that yawam (day) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) were isharayam (twenty) - chamash (five) alap (thousand) anashay (men) who shalap (drew) the charab (sword); all these were anashay (men) of valor.

But shash (six) maah (hundred) ayash (man / husband) panah (turn) and nawas (fled) toward the madabar (wilderness) to the salai (rock) of Ramawan (Rimmon), and stayed in the salai (rock) of Ramawan (Rimmon) arabai (four) chadashayam (months).

The ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) shawab (turn) again on the banay (my son) of Banayamayan (Benjamin), and nakah (struck) them with the pah (edge) of the charab (sword), both the entire iyar (city), and the livestock, and all that they matzaa (found): moreover all the irayam (cities) which they matzaa (found) they shalach (send) on ash (fire).
