Judges 21 — Novel English Bible

Now the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) had shabai (swear / take oath) in Matzapah (Mizpah), amar (said), “There shall not any of us nathan (give) his banath (daughter) to Banayamayan (Benjamin) as ayashah (woman / wife).”

The im (nation / people) bawaa (come) to Al (Bethel), and yashab (inhabit/dwell) there until irab (evening) panayam (face) Alahayam (), and nashaa (lift) up their qawal (sound / voice), and bakah (wept) severely.

They amar (spoke), “Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of Yashar-Al (Israel), why has this happened in Yashar-Al (Israel), that there should be today achad (one) shabat (tribe) paqad (visit) in Yashar-Al (Israel)?”

It happened on the next macharath (day) that the im (nation / people) shakam (rose) early, and banah (build) there an mazabach (altar), and ilah (go up / offer) burnt ilawath (offerings) and peace ilawath (offerings).

The banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel) amar (spoke), “Who is there among all the shabatay (tribes) of Yashar-Al (Israel) who didn't ilah (go up / offer) up in the qahal (assembly) to Yahawah ()?” For they had made a gadawal (very great/important/mighty) shabawaih (oath) concerning him who didn't ilah (go up / offer) up to Yahawah () to Matzapah (Mizpah), amar (spoke), “He shall mawath (death) be put to mawath (death).”

The banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) grieved for Banayamayan (Benjamin) their ach (brother/kinsman), and amar (said), “There is achad (one) shabat (tribe) gadai (cut) off from Yashar-Al (Israel) this yawam (day).

How shall we provide wives for those who yathar (remain), since we have shabai (swear / take oath) by Yahawah () that we will not nathan (give) them of our banath (daughter) to wives?”

They amar (spoke), “What achad (one) is there of the shabatay (tribes) of Yashar-Al (Israel) who didn't ilah (go up / offer) up to Yahawah () to Matzapah (Mizpah)?” Behold, there bawaa (come) ayash (man / husband) to the machanah (camp) from Yabash (Jabesh Gilead) to the qahal (assembly).

For when the im (nation / people) were paqad (visit), behold, there were ayash (man / husband) of the yawashabay (inhabitants) of Yabash (dry land) there.

The idah (congregation) shalach (send) there shanayam (two) alap (thousand) ayash (man / husband) of the most ban (son), and tzawah (commanded) them, amar (said), “yalak (go) and nakah (strike) the yawashabay (inhabitants) of Yabash (dry land) with the pah (edge) of the charab (sword), with the nashayam (women) and the little tap (ones).

This is the thing that you shall ishah (make): you shall utterly charam (destroy) every zakar (remember), and every ayashah (woman / wife) who has lain with a yadai (man).”

They matzaa (found) among the yawashabay (inhabitants) of Yabash (dry land) arabai (four) maah (hundred) nairah (young) bathawalah (virgins), who yadai (had) not known ayash (man / husband) by lying with him; and they bawaa (bring) them to the machanah (camp) to Shayalah (Shiloh), which is in the aratz (Earth/land) of Kanain (Canaan).

The whole idah (congregation) shalach (send) and dabar (word / matter) to the banay (my son) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) who were in the salai (rock) of Ramawan (Rimmon), and qaraa (called) shalawam (peace / safety) to them.

Banayamayan (Benjamin) shawab (turn) at that ith (time); and they nathan (give) them the nashayam (women) whom they had chayah (saved) alive of the nashayam (women) of Yabash (dry land): and yet so they weren't matzaa (enough) for them.

The im (nation / people) grieved for Banayamayan (Benjamin), because that Yahawah () ishah (make) made a paratz (breach) in the shabatay (tribes) of Yashar-Al (Israel).

Then the zaqanay (elders) of the idah (congregation) amar (said), “How shall we ishah (make) wives for those who yathar (remain), since the nashayam (women) are destroyed out of Banayamayan (Benjamin)?”

They amar (said), “There must be an yarashah (inheritance) for those who are palayatah (escaped) of Banayamayan (Benjamin), that a shabat (tribe) not be machah (blotted) out from Yashar-Al (Israel).

However we may not nathan (give) them wives of our banath (daughter), for the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) had shabai (swear / take oath), amar (said), ‘arar (cursed) is he who nathan (give) a ayashah (woman / wife) to Banayamayan (Benjamin).’”

They amar (spoke), “Behold, there is a chag (feast/festival) of Yahawah () from yawam (day) to year in Shayalah (Shiloh), which is on the tzapawan (north) of Bayath-Al (Bethel), on the east tzapawan (side) of the masalah (highway) that ilah (go up / offer) up from Bayath-Al (Bethel) to Shakam (Shechem), and on the nagab (south) of Labawanah (Lebonah).”

They tzawah (commanded) the banay (my son) of Banayamayan (Benjamin), amar (said), “yalak (go) and lie in arab (wait) in the karamayam (vineyards),

And raah (see / saw), and behold, if the banawath (daughters) of Shayalah (Shiloh) yatzaa (go out / come out) out to chawal (dance) in the machalawath (dances), then yatzaa (go out / come out) out of the karamayam (vineyards), and each ayash (man / husband) chatap (catch) his ayashah (woman / wife) of the banawath (daughters) of Shayalah (Shiloh), and halak (move) to the aratz (Earth/land) of Banayamayan (Benjamin).

It shall be, when their ab (father) or their ach (brother/kinsman) bawaa (bring) to rayab (complain) to us, that we will amar (said) to them, ‘chanan (showing favor) them graciously to us, because we didn't laqach (take / seize) for each ayash (man / husband) his ayashah (woman / wife) in malachamah (battle), neither nathan (give) you give them to them, otherwise you would now be asham (guilty).’”

The banay (my son) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) ishah (make) so, and nashaa (lift) them wives, according to their masapar (number), of those who chawal (danced), whom they carried off. They yalak (went) and shawab (turn) to their nachalah (inheritance), banah (build) the irayam (cities), and lived in them.

The banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) departed there at that ith (time), every ayash (man / husband) to his shabat (tribe) and to his mashapachah (tribe / clan / family), and they yatzaa (go out / come out) out from there every ayash (man / husband) to his nachalah (inheritance).

In those yamayam (days) there was no malak (king) in Yashar-Al (Israel): every ayash (man / husband) ishah (make) that which was yashar (upright) in his own iyan (eye).
