1 Samuel 4 — English–Hebrew Parallel

1 The dabar (word / matter) of Shamawaal (Samuel) came to all Yashar-Al (Israel). Now Yashar-Al (Israel) yatzaa (go out / come out) out il (over) the Palashathay (Philistines) to malachamah (battle), and chanah (encamped) beside Abanahaizar (Ebenezer): and the Palashathay (Philistines) chanah (encamped) in Apaq (Aphek).

3 When the im (nation / people) bawaa (come) come into the machanah (camp), the zaqanay (elders) of Yashar-Al (Israel) amar (spoke), “Why has Yahawah () nagap (struck) us today panayam (face) the Palashathay (Philistines)? Let us laqach (take / seize) the arawan (ark) of the barayath (covenant) of Yahawah () out of Shayalah (Shiloh) to us, that it may bawaa (come) qarab (among / near) us, and yashai (salvation) us out of the kap (hand) of our ayab (enemy).”

4 So the im (nation / people) shalach (send) to Shayalah (Shiloh); and they nashaa (lift) from there the arawan (ark) of the barayath (covenant) of Yahawah () of tzabaawath (armies), who yashab (inhabit/dwell) above the karawab (cherubim): and the shanayam (two) banay (sons) of Ilay (Eli), Chapanay (Hophni) and Payanachas (Phinehas), were there with the arawan (ark) of the barayath (covenant) of Alahayam ().

5 When the arawan (ark) of the barayath (covenant) of Yahawah () bawaa (come) into the machanah (camp), all Yashar-Al (Israel) rawai (shouted) with a gadawal (very great/important/mighty) tharawaih (shout), so that the aratz (Earth/land) hawam (rang) again.

6 When the Palashathay (Philistines) shamai (hearken / hear) the qawal (sound / voice) of the tharawaih (shout), they amar (spoke), “What does the qawal (sound / voice) of this gadawal (very great/important/mighty) tharawaih (shout) in the machanah (camp) of the ibarayam (hebrews) mean?” They yadai (understood) that the arawan (ark) of Yahawah () bawaa (come) come into the machanah (camp).

7 The Palashathay (Philistines) were yaraa (fear / be afraid), for they amar (spoke), “Alahayam () bawaa (come) come into the machanah (camp).” They amar (spoke), “away (woe) to us! For there has not been such a thing athamawal (before).

8 Away (woe) to us! Who shall natzal (deliver) us out of the yad (hand) of these adayar (mighty) Alahayam ()? These are the Alahayam () that nakah (struck) the Matzarayam (Egyptians) with all kinds of makah (plagues) in the madabar (wilderness).

9 Be chazaq (strong), and behave like hathachazaqaw (men), O you Palashathay (Philistines), that you not be thaibadaw (servants) to the ibarayam (hebrews), as they have been to you. Strengthen yourselves like hathachazaqaw (men), and lacham (fight)!”

10 The Palashathay (Philistines) lacham (fought), and Yashar-Al (Israel) was nagap (struck), and they nawas (fled) every ayash (man / husband) to his ahal (tent): and there was a very gadawal (very great/important/mighty) makah (slaughter); for there napal (fall / be cast down) of Yashar-Al (Israel) shalawashayam (thirty) alap (thousand) footmen.

11 The arawan (ark) of Alahayam () was laqach (take / seize); and the shanayam (two) banay (sons) of Ilay (Eli), Chapanay (Hophni) and Payanachas (Phinehas), were mawath (death).

12 There rawatz (ran) a ayash (man / husband) of Banayamayan (Benjamin) out of the mairakah (army), and bawaa (bring) to Shayalah (Shiloh) the same yawam (day), with his mad (clothes) qarai (torn), and with adamah (earth) on his raash (head).

13 When he bawaa (come), behold, Ilay (Eli) was sitting on his kasaa (seat) by the road tzapah (watchman / keep watch); for his lab (heart) trembled for the arawan (ark) of Alahayam (). When the ayash (man / husband) bawaa (come) into the iyar (city), and nagad (told) it, all the iyar (city) zaiq (cried) out.

14 When Ilay (went up) shamai (hearken / hear) the qawal (sound / voice) of the tzaiqah (crying), he amar (said), “What does the qawal (sound / voice) of this tumult mean?” The ayash (man / husband) hurried, and bawaa (bring) and nagad (told) Ilay (went up).

15 Now Ilay (went up) was thashaiyam (ninety) - shamanah (eight) shanah (years) ban (son); and his iyan (eye) were qawam (rise up), so that he yakal (could) not raah (see / saw).

16 The ayash (man / husband) amar (said) to Ilay (went up), “I am he who bawaa (bring) out of the mairakah (army), and I nawas (fled) today out of the mairakah (army).” He amar (said), “How dabar (word / matter) the matter go, my ban (son)?”

17 He who inah (answer / respond) the news answered, “Yashar-Al (Israel) has nawas (fled) panayam (face) the Palashathay (Philistines), and there has been also a gadawal (very great/important/mighty) magapah (slaughter) among the im (nation / people). Your shanayam (two) ban (son) also, Chapanay (Hophni) and Payanachas (Phinehas), are mawath (death), and the arawan (ark) of Alahayam () has been captured.”

18 It happened, when he zakar (remember) mention of the arawan (ark) of Alahayam (), that Eli napal (fall / be cast down) from off his kasaa (seat) backward by the yad (hand) of the shair (gate); and his maparaqath (neck) shabar (broke), and he mawath (death); for he was an zaqan (old) ayash (man / husband), and kabad (heavy). 20 About the ith (time) of her mawath (death) the women who natzab (stood) by her dabar (word / matter) to her, “Don't be yaraa (fear / be afraid); for you have given yalad (birth / begot) to a ban (son).” But she didn't inah (answer / respond), neither did she shayath (put / appoint / make) it.

21 She qaraa (called) the nair (child) Ayakabawad (Ichabod), amar (spoke), “The kabawad (glory) has departed from Yashar-Al (Israel);” al (toward) the arawan (ark) of Alahayam () was laqach (take / seize), and because of her father-in-law and her ayash (man / husband).

22 She amar (spoke), “The kabawad (glory) has departed from Yashar-Al (Israel); for the arawan (ark) of Alahayam () is laqach (take / seize).”
