Ecclesiastes 4 — English–Hebrew Parallel

Then I shawab (turn) and raah (see / saw) all the ishaqayam (oppressions) that are ishah (make) under the shamash (sun): and behold, the damaih (tears) of those who were ishaq (oppressed), and they had no comforter; and on the yad (hand) of their oppressors there was kach (strength / mighty / power); but they had no comforter.

Therefore I shabach (praised) the mawath (death) who have been long mawath (death) more than the chay (life) who are yet chay (life).

Yes, tawab (good / proper function) than them shanayam (two) is him who has not yet been, who raah (see / saw) not seen the rai (evil) maishah (work) that is ishah (make) under the shamash (sun).

Then I raah (see / saw) all the imal (labor) and achievement that is the qanaah (envy) of a ayash (man / husband) neighbor. This also is habal (vanity) and a striving after rawach (spirit / wind).

The kasayal (fool) chabaq (folds) his yad (hand) together and ruins himself.

Tawab (good / proper function) is a kap (handful), with nachath (quietness), than chapan (two) handfuls with imal (labor) and chasing after rawach (spirit / wind).

Then I shawab (turn) and raah (see / saw) habal (vanity) under the shamash (sun).

There is achad (one) who is shanay (second), and he has neither ban (son) nor ach (brother/kinsman). There is no qatz (end) to all of his imal (labor), neither are his iyan (eye) shabai (satisfied) with wealth. “For whom then, do I imal (labor), and deprive my napash (soul) of enjoyment?” This also is habal (vanity). Yes, it is a miserable inayan (business).

Shanayam (two) are tawab (good / proper function) than achad (one), because they yash (have) a tawab (good / proper function) shakar (reward) for their imal (labor).

For if they napal (fall / be cast down), the achad (one) will qawam (rise up) up his chabar (fellow); but ay (woe) to him who is achad (one) when he yapalaw (falls), and doesn't have shanay (second) to qawam (rise up) him up.

Again, if shanayam (two) shakab (lie) together, then they have warmth; but how can achad (one) keep yacham (warm) alone?

If a achad (one) thaqap (prevails) against one who is alone, shanayam (two) shall withstand him; and a threefold chawat (cord) is not maharah (quickly) nathaq (broken).

Tawab (good / proper function) is a masakan (poor) and chakam (wise) youth than an zaqan (old) and kasayal (foolish) malak (king) who doesn't yadai (know) how to receive admonition any more.

For out of asar (prison) he yatzaa (go out / come out) forth to be malak (king); yes, even in his malakawath (kingdom) he was yalad (birth / begot) rawash (poor).

I raah (see / saw) all the chay (life) who halak (move) under the shamash (sun), that they were with the youth, the other, who succeeded him.

There was no qatz (end) of all the im (nation / people), even of all them over whom he was—yet those who acharawan (come) after shall not shamach (rejoice) in him. Surely this also is habal (vanity) and a chasing after rawach (spirit / wind).

Guard your steps when you yatzaa (go out / come out) to Alahayam () house; for to draw near to listen is better than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they don't know that they dabar (word / matter) evil.
