Ezekiel 18 — English–Hebrew Parallel

The dabar (word / matter) of Yahawah () came to me again, amar (spoke),

“What do you mean, that you use this mashal (proverb) concerning the adamah (land) of Yashar-Al (Israel), amar (said), ‘The abawath (fathers) have akal (eat) basar (sour) grapes, and the banayam (childrens) shanay (second) are qahah (set) on edge’?

“As I chay (life),” naam (declares prophetically) the Adanay () Yahawah (), “you shall not have occasion any more to use this mashal (proverb) in Yashar-Al (Israel).

Behold, all napashawath (souls) are mine; as the napash (soul) of the ab (father), so also the napash (soul) of the ban (son) is mine: the napash (soul) who chataa (sins), he shall mawath (death).

“But if a ayash (man / husband) is tzadayaq (righteous), and ishah (make) that which is mashapat (lawful) and tzadaqah (righteousness),

And has not akal (eat) on the harayam (mountains), neither has nashaa (lift) up his iyan (eye) to the galawalay (idols) of the bayath (house) of Yashar-Al (Israel), neither has tamaa (defiled) his neighbor's ayashah (woman / wife), neither has qarab (come close) near to a ayashah (woman / wife) in her impurity,

And has not wronged any, but has shawab (turn) to the chawab (debtor) his chabal (pledge), has gazal (taken) nothing by robbery, nathan (give) given his lacham (bread) to the raib (hungry), and has kasah (covered) the iyaram (naked) with a bagad (garment);

He who nathan (give) not given forth on interest, neither has laqach (take / seize) any tharabayath (increase), who has shawab (turn) his yad (hand) from iwal (iniquity), ishah (make) executed amath (truth) mashapat (justice) between ayash (man / husband) and ayash (man / husband),

Has halak (move) in my chaqah (statutes), and has shamar (keep/guard) my mashapat (ordinances), to ishah (make) truly; he is tzadayaq (righteous), he shall chayah (surely) chayah (live),” naam (declares prophetically) the Adanay () Yahawah ().

“If he yalad (birth / begot) a ban (son) who is a parayatz (robber), a shedder of dam (blood), and who ishah (make) any achad (one) of these things,

And who ishah (make) not any of those duties, but even has akal (eat) on the harayam (mountains), and tamaa (defiled) his neighbor's ayashah (woman / wife),

Has wronged the inay (poor) and abayawan (needy), has gazal (taken) by robbery, has not shawab (turn) the chabal (pledge), and has nashaa (lift) up his iyan (eye) to the galawalayam (idols), ishah (make) committed thawaibah (abomination),

Nathan (give) given forth on interest, and has laqach (take / seize) tharabayath (increase); shall he then chayay (life)? He shall not chayah (live): he ishah (make) done all these thawaibawath (abominations); he shall mawath (death) mawath (death); his dam (blood) shall be on him.

“Now, behold, if he yalad (birth / begot) a ban (son), who raah (see / saw) all his ab (father) chataath (sins), which he ishah (make) done, and raah (see / saw), and ishah (make) not such like;

Who has not akal (eat) on the harayam (mountains), neither has nashaa (lift) up his iyan (eye) to the galawalay (idols) of the bayath (house) of Yashar-Al (Israel), has not tamaa (defiled) his neighbor's ayashah (woman / wife),

Neither has wronged any, has not taken anything to chabal (pledge), neither has gazal (taken) by robbery, but nathan (give) given his lacham (bread) to the raib (hungry), and has kasah (covered) the iyaram (naked) with a bagad (garment);

Who has shawab (turn) his yad (hand) from the inay (poor), who has not laqach (take / seize) interest nor tharabayath (increase), ishah (make) executed my mashapat (ordinances), has halak (move) in my chaqah (statutes); he shall not mawath (death) for the iwan (guilt/iniquity) of his ab (father), he shall chayah (surely) chayah (live).

As for his ab (father), because he ishaq (cruelly) ishaq (oppressed), gazal (robbed) his ach (brother/kinsman), and ishah (make) that which is not tawab (good / proper function) thawak (midst) his im (nation / people), behold, he shall mawath (death) in his iwan (guilt/iniquity).

“Yet you amar (said), ‘Why doesn't the ban (son) nashaa (lift) the iwan (guilt/iniquity) of the ab (father)?’ When the ban (son) ishah (make) done that which is mashapat (lawful) and tzadaqah (righteousness), and has shamar (keep/guard) all my chaqah (statutes), and ishah (make) done them, he shall chayah (surely) chayah (live).

The napash (soul) who chataa (sins), he shall mawath (death): the ban (son) shall not nashaa (lift) the iwan (guilt/iniquity) of the ab (father), neither shall the ab (father) nashaa (lift) the iwan (guilt/iniquity) of the ban (son); the tzadaqah (righteousness) of the tzadayaq (righteous) shall be on him, and the rashaih (wickedness) of the rashai (wicked) shall be on him.

“But if the rashai (wicked) shawab (turn) from all his chataah (sin) that he ishah (make) committed, and shamar (keep/guard) all my chaqah (statutes), and ishah (make) that which is mashapat (lawful) and tzadaqah (righteousness), he shall chayah (surely) chayah (live), he shall not mawath (death).

None of his pashai (transgressions) that he ishah (make) committed shall be zakar (remember) against him: in his tzadaqah (righteousness) that he ishah (make) done he shall chayah (live).

Chapatz (have) I any chapatz (pleasure) in the mawath (death) of the rashai (wicked)?” Naam (declares prophetically) the Adanay () Yahawah (); “and not rather that he should shawab (turn back / repent) from his darak (way), and chayah (live)?

“But when the tzadayaq (righteous) shawab (turn) away from his tzadaqah (righteousness), and ishah (make) iwal (iniquity), and ishah (make) according to all the thawaibawath (abominations) that the rashai (wicked) ishah (make) does, shall he chayay (life)? None of his tzadaqah (righteousness) deeds that he ishah (make) done shall be zakar (remember): in his mail (top/above) that he has mail (top/above), and in his chataah (sin) that he has chataa (sinned), in them shall he mawath (death).

“Yet you amar (spoke), ‘The darak (way) of the Adanay () is not thakan (equal).’ Shamai (hearken / hear) now, bayath (house) of Yashar-Al (Israel): Is my darak (way) not thakan (equal)? Aren't your darak (ways) thakan (unequal)?

When the tzadayaq (righteous) man shawab (turn) away from his tzadaqah (righteousness), and ishah (make) iwal (iniquity), and mawath (death) therein; in his iwal (iniquity) that he ishah (make) done shall he mawath (death).

Again, when the rashai (wicked) man shawab (turn) away from his rashaih (wickedness) that he ishah (make) committed, and ishah (make) that which is mashapat (lawful) and tzadaqah (righteousness), he shall chayah (save) his napash (soul) chayah (alive).

Because he raah (see / saw), and shawab (turn) away from all his pashai (transgressions) that he ishah (make) committed, he shall chayah (surely) chayah (live), he shall not mawath (death).

Yet the bayath (house) of Yashar-Al (Israel) amaraw (says), ‘The darak (way) of the Adanay () is not fair.’ Bayath (house) of Yashar-Al (Israel), aren't my darak (ways) fair? Aren't your darak (ways) unfair?

“Therefore I will shapat (judge / judgement) you, bayath (house) of Yashar-Al (Israel), everyone according to his darak (ways),” naam (declares prophetically) the Adanay () Yahawah (). “Shawab (turn back / repent), and shawab (turn back / repent) yourselves from all your pashai (transgressions); so iwan (guilt/iniquity) shall not be your makashawal (ruin).

Shalak (cast) away from you all your pashai (transgressions), in which you have pashai (transgressed); and ishah (make) yourself a chadash (new) lab (heart) and a chadash (new) rawach (spirit / wind): for why will you mawath (death), bayath (house) of Yashar-Al (Israel)?

For I chapatz (have) no pleasure in the mawath (death) of him who mawath (death),” naam (declares prophetically) the Adanay () Yahawah (): “therefore shawab (turn back / repent) yourselves, and chayah (live).
