Genesis 24 — English–Hebrew Parallel

1 Abaraham (Abraham) was zaqan (old), and well bawaa (come) in yawam (day). Yahawah () had barak (blessed) Abaraham (Abraham) in all things.

2 Abaraham (Abraham - Patriarch) amar (said) to his ibad (servant), the zaqan (elder) of his bayath (house), who mashal (rule/have dominion) over all that he had, “Please shawam (place / establish / appoint) your yad (hand) under my yarak (thigh).

3 I will make you shabai (swear / take oath) by Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of shamayam (Shamayam / Heavens) and the Alahayam () of the aratz (Earth/land), that you shall not laqach (take / seize) a ayashah (woman / wife) for my ban (son) of the banawath (daughters) of the Kanainay (Canaanites), qarab (among / near) whom I live.

4 But you shall yalak (go) to my aratz (Earth/land), and to my relatives, and laqach (take / seize) a ayashah (woman / wife) for my ban (son) Yatzachaq (Isaac).”

5 The ibad (servant) amar (said) to him, “What if the ayashah (woman / wife) isn't abah (be willing / desire) to yalak (follow) me to this aratz (Earth/land)? Must I shawab (turn) your ban (son) again to the aratz (Earth/land) you yatzaa (go out / come out) from?”

6 Abaraham (Abraham - Patriarch) amar (said) to him, “Beware that you don't shawab (turn) my ban (son) there again.

7 Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of shamayam (Shamayam / Heavens), who laqach (take / seize) me from my ab (father) bayath (house), and from the aratz (Earth/land) of my birth, who dabar (word / matter) to me, and who shabai (swear / take oath) to me, amar (spoke), ‘I will nathan (give) this aratz (Earth/land) to your zarai (seed). He will shalach (send) his malaak (angel / messenger of Yah) panayam (face) you, and you shall laqach (take / seize) a ayashah (woman / wife) for my ban (son) from there.

8 If the ayashah (woman / wife) isn't abah (be willing / desire) to yalak (follow) you, then you shall be naqah (clean/innocent) from this my shabawaih (oath). Only you shall not shawab (turn) my ban (son) there again.”

9 The ibad (servant) shawam (place / establish / appoint) his yad (hand) under the yarak (thigh) of Abaraham (Abraham - Patriarch) his adawan (master / lord), and shabai (swear / take oath) to him il (over) zah (this / that / these) dabar (word / matter).

10 The ibad (servant) laqach (take / seize) ishar (ten) gamalayam (camels), of his adawan (master / lord) gamalayam (camels), and departed, having a variety of tawab (good / proper function) things of his adawan (master / lord) with him. He qawam (rise up), and yalak (went) to Aramanaharayam (Mesopotamia), to the iyar (city) of Nachawar (Nahor).

11 He made the gamalayam (camels) barak (blessed) down outside the iyar (city) by the baar (well) of mayam (Waters) at the ith (time) of irab (evening), the ith (time) that women yatzaa (go out / come out) out to draw shaab (water).

12 He amar (spoke), “Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of my adawan (master / lord) Abaraham (Abraham), panayam (face) give me success this yawam (day), and show chasad (grace) to my adawan (master / lord) Abaraham (Abraham).

13 Behold, I am natzab (standing) by the spring of mayam (Waters). The banawath (daughters) of the anashay (men) of the iyar (city) are yatzaa (go out / come out) out to shaab (draw) mayam (Waters).

14 Let it happen, that the nairah (young) lady to whom I will amar (said), ‘Please natah (let) down your kad (pitcher), that I may shathah (drinks),’ and she will amar (said), ‘shathah (drinks), and I will also shaqah (give) your gamal (camels) a drink,’—let her be the one you have yakach (appointed) for your ibad (servant) Yatzachaq (Isaac). By this I yadai (will) know that you ishah (make) shown chasad (grace) to my adawan (master / lord).”

15 It happened, before he kalah (complete / finish) finished dabar (word / matter), that behold, Rabaqah (Rebekah) yatzaa (go out / come out) out, who was yalad (birth / begot) to Bathawaal (Bethuel) the ban (son) of Malakah (Milcah), the ayashah (woman / wife) of Nachawar (Nahor), Abaraham (Abraham - Patriarch) ach (brother/kinsman), with her kad (pitcher) on her shakam (shoulder).

16 The nairah (young) lady was very tawab (good / proper function) to maraah (look) at, a bathawalah (virgin), neither had any ayash (man / husband) yadai (known) her. She yarad (went) down to the spring, malaa (filled) her kad (pitcher), and ilah (go up / offer) up.

17 The ibad (servant) rawatz (ran) to qaraah (meet) her, and amar (said), “Please give me a gamaa (drink), a mait (little) mayam (Waters) from your kad (pitcher).”

18 She amar (spoke), “shathah (drinks), my Adawan ().” She hurried, and yarad (let) down her kad (pitcher) on her yad (hand), and shaqah (gave) him drink.

19 When she kalah (complete / finish) done shaqah (giving) him drink, she amar (said), “I will also shaab (draw) for your gamal (camels), until they kalah (complete / finish) done shathah (drinks).”

20 She hurried, and irah (emptied) her kad (pitcher) into the shaqath (trough), and rawatz (ran) again to the baar (well) to shaab (draw), and shaab (drew) for all his gamal (camels).

21 The ayash (man / husband) looked steadfastly at her, remaining charash (silent), to yadai (know) whether Yahawah () had tzalach (made) his darak (journey) prosperous or not.

22 It happened, as the gamalayam (camels) kalah (complete / finish) done shathah (drinks), that the ayash (man / husband) laqach (take / seize) a zahab (gold) ring of baqai (half) a shekel mashaqal (weight), and shanayam (two) tzamayadayam (bracelets) for her yad (hand) of ishar (ten) shekels mashaqal (weight) of zahab (gold),

23 And amar (said), “Whose banath (daughter) are you? Please nagad (tell) me. Is there maqawam (place) in your ab (father) bayath (house) for us to lawan (lodge) in?”

24 She amar (said) to him, “I am the banath (daughter) of Bathawaal (Bethuel) the ban (son) of Malakah (Milcah), whom she yalad (birth / begot) to Nachawar (Nahor).”

25 She amar (said) moreover to him, “We have gam (indeed / moreover) thaban (straw) and masapawaa (provender) rab (enough), and maqawam (place) to lawan (lodge) in.”

26 The ayash (man / husband) bowed his qadad (head), and shachah (worshiped) Yahawah ().

27 He amar (spoke), "barak (blessed) be Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of my adawan (master / lord) Abaraham (Abraham - Patriarch), who has not forsaken his ahab (loving) chasad (grace) and his amath (truth) toward my adawan (master / lord). As for me, Yahawah () has nachah (led) me in the darak (way) to the bayath (house) of my ach (brother), my adawan (master / lord).

28 The nairah (young) lady rawatz (ran), and nagad (told) her am (mother) bayath (house) about these dabarayam (words).

29 Rabaqah (Rebekah) had a ach (brother/kinsman), and his sham (name) was Laban (Laban). Laban (Laban) rawatz (ran) out to the ayash (man / husband), to the spring.

30 It happened, when he raah (see / saw) the ring, and the tzamadayam (bracelets) on his achawath (sister's) yaday (hands), and when he shamai (hearken / hear) the dabaray (words) of Rabaqah (Rebekah) his achawath (sister), amar (said), “kah (this) is what the ayash (man / husband) dabar (word / matter) to me,” that he bawaa (bring) to the ayash (man / husband). Behold, he was imad (standing) by the gamalayam (camels) at the spring.

31 He amar (spoke), “bawaa (come) in, you barak (blessed) of Yahawah (). Why do you imad (stand) outside? For I have panah (turn) the bayath (house), and maqawam (place) for the gamalayam (camels).”

32 The ayash (man / husband) bawaa (bring) into the bayath (house), and he unloaded the gamalayam (camels). He nathan (give) thaban (straw) and masapawaa (provender) for the gamalayam (camels), and mayam (Waters) to rachatz (wash) his ragalay (feet) and the ragalay (feet) of the anashayam (men) who were with him.

33 Food was set panayam (face) him to akal (eat), but he amar (said), “I will not akal (eat) until I have dabar (word / matter) my dabar (word / matter).” He amar (said), “dabar (word / matter) on.”

34 He amar (said), “I am Abaraham (Abraham - Patriarch) ibad (servant).

35 Yahawah () has barak (blessed) my adawan (master / lord) maad (greatly). He has become gadal (great). He nathan (give) given him tzaan (flocks) and baqar (morning), kasap (silver) and zahab (gold), male ibadam (servants) and female shapachath (servants), and gamalayam (camels) and donkeys.

36 Sharah (Sarah), my adawan (master / lord) ayashah (woman / wife), yalad (birth / begot) a ban (son) to my adawan (master / lord) when she was zaqanah (old). He nathan (give) given all that he has to him.

37 My adawan (master / lord) made me shabai (swear / take oath), amar (said), ‘You shall not laqach (take / seize) a ayashah (woman / wife) for my ban (son) of the banawath (daughters) of the Kanainay (Canaanite), in whose aratz (Earth/land) I live,

38 But you shall yalak (go) to my ab (father) bayath (house), and to my relatives, and laqach (take / seize) a ayashah (woman / wife) for my ban (son).’

39 I asked my adawan (master / lord), ‘What if the ayashah (woman / wife) will not yalak (follow) me?’

40 He amar (spoke) to me, ‘Yahawah (), panayam (face) whom I halak (move), will shalach (send) his malaak (angel / messenger of Yah) with you, and tzalach (prosper) your darak (way). You shall laqach (take / seize) a ayashah (woman / wife) for my ban (son) of my relatives, and of my ab (father) bayath (house).

41 Then will you be naqah (clean/innocent) from my alah (these), when you bawaa (bring) to my relatives. If they don't nathan (give) her to you, you shall be naqay (clear) from my alah (these).’

42 I bawaa (come) this yawam (day) to the spring, and amar (spoke), ‘Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of my adawan (master / lord) Abaraham (Abraham), if now you yash (do) tzalach (prosper) my darak (way) which I halak (move)—

43 Behold, I am natzab (standing) by this spring of mayam (Waters). Let it happen, that the maiden who yatzaa (go out / come out) out to shaab (draw), to whom I will amar (said), “Please shaqah (give) me a mait (little) mayam (Waters) from your kad (pitcher) to shaqah (drink),”

44 And she will tell me, “shathah (drinks), and I will also shaab (draw) for your camels,”—let her be the ayashah (woman / wife) whom Yahawah () has appointed for my adawan (master / lord) ban (son).’

45 Before I kalah (complete / finish) finished dabar (word / matter) in my lab (heart), behold, Rabaqah (Rebekah) yatzaa (go out / come out) out with her kad (pitcher) on her shakam (shoulder). She yarad (went) down to the spring, and shaab (drew). I amar (said) to her, ‘Please shaqah (let) me drink.’

46 She hurried and yarad (let) down her kad (pitcher) from her shoulder, and amar (said), ‘shathah (drinks), and I will also shaqah (give) your gamalayam (camels) a shaqah (drink).’ So I shathah (drinks), and she also shaqah (gave) the gamalayam (camels) a shaqah (drink).

47 I shaal (asked) her, and amar (said), ‘Whose banath (daughter) are you?’ She amar (said), ‘The banath (daughter) of Bathawaal (Bethuel), Nachawar (Nahor's) ban (son), whom Malakah (Milcah) yalad (birth / begot) to him.’ I shawam (place / establish / appoint) the ring on her ap (nostril / picture: bull snorting), and the tzamayadayam (bracelets) on her yad (hand).

48 I bowed my qadad (head), and shachah (worshiped) Yahawah (), and barak (blessed) Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of my adawan (master / lord) Abaraham (Abraham), who had nachah (led) me in the amath (truth) darak (way) to laqach (take / seize) my adawan (master / lord) ach (brother/kinsman) banath (daughter) for his ban (son).

49 Now if you yash (will) ishah (make) chasad (grace) and truly with my adawan (master / lord), nagad (tell) me. If not, nagad (tell) me, that I may panah (turn) to the right yamayan (right hand), or to the shamaawal (left hand).”

50 Then Laban (Laban) and Bathawaal (Bethuel) inah (answer / respond), “The thing yatzaa (go out / come out) from Yahawah (). We can't dabar (word / matter) to you rai (bad) or tawab (good / proper function).

51 Behold, Rabaqah (Rebekah) is panayam (face) you. Laqach (take / seize) her, and yalak (go), and let her be your adawan (master / lord) ban (son) ayashah (woman / wife), as Yahawah () has dabar (word / matter).”

52 It happened that when Abaraham (Abraham's) ibad (servant) shamai (hearken / hear) their dabar (word / matter), he shachah (bowed) himself down to the aratz (Earth/land) to Yahawah ().

53 The ibad (servant) yatzaa (go out / come out) out kalay (jewels) of kasap (silver), and kalay (jewels) of zahab (gold), and bagad (clothing), and nathan (give) them to Rabaqah (Rebekah). He also nathan (give) magadanah (precious) things to her ach (brother/kinsman) and her am (mother).

54 They akal (eat) and shathah (drinks), he and the anashayam (men) who were with him, and stayed all lawan (night). They qawam (rise up) up in the baqar (morning), and he amar (said), “shalach (send) me away to my adawan (master / lord).”

55 Her ach (brother/kinsman) and her am (mother) amar (said), “Let the nairah (young) lady stay with us a few yamayam (days), at aw (or) ishawar (ten). Achar (other) that she will yalak (go).”

56 He amar (spoke) to them, “Don't achar (other) me, since Yahawah () has tzalach (prospered) my darak (way). Shalach (send) me away that I may yalak (go) to my adawan (master / lord).”

57 They amar (said), “We will qaraa (called) the nairah (young) lady, and shaal (ask) her.”

58 They qaraa (called) Rabaqah (Rebekah), and amar (said) to her, “Will you yalak (go) with this ayash (man / husband)?” She amar (said), “I will yalak (go).”

59 They shalach (send) away Rabaqah (Rebekah), their achawath (sister), with her yanaq (nurse), Abaraham (Abraham - Patriarch) ibad (servant), and his ayash (man / husband).

60 They barak (blessed) Rabaqah (Rebekah), and amar (said) to her, “Our achawath (sister), may you be the mother of alapay (thousands) of rababah (ten) thousands, and let your zarai (seed) yarash (possess) the shair (gate) of those who shanaa (hate) them.”

61 Rabaqah (Rebekah) qawam (rise up) with her ladies. They rakab (rode) on the gamalayam (camels), and yalak (followed) the ayash (man / husband). The ibad (servant) laqach (take / seize) Rabaqah (Rebekah), and went his yalak (way).

62 Yatzachaq (Isaac) bawaa (bring) from the bawaa (bring) of Baaralachayaraay (Beer Lahai) Roi, for he lived in the aratz (Earth/land) of the nagab (south).

63 Yatzachaq (Isaac) yatzaa (go out / come out) out to shawach (meditate) in the shadah (field) at the irab (evening). He nashaa (lift) up his iyan (eye), and raah (see / saw), and, behold, there were gamalayam (camels) bawaa (bring).

64 Rabaqah (Rebekah) nashaa (lift) up her iyan (eye), and when she raah (see / saw) Yatzachaq (Isaac), she dismounted from the gamal (camel).

65 She amar (said) to the ibad (servant), “Who is the ayash (man / husband) who is halak (move) in the shadah (field) to qaraah (meet) us?” The ibad (servant) amar (said), “It is my adawan (master / lord).” She laqach (take / seize) her tzaiyap (veil), and kasah (covered) herself.

66 The ibad (servant) sapar (book) Yatzachaq (Isaac) all the things that he ishah (make) done.

67 Yatzachaq (Isaac) bawaa (bring) her into his am (mother) Sharah (Sarah's) ahal (tent), and laqach (take / seize) Rabaqah (Rebekah), and she became his ayashah (woman / wife). He ahab (love) her. Yatzachaq (Isaac) was nacham (turn away / repent) achar (other) his am (mother) death.
