Jeremiah 2 — English–Hebrew Parallel

The dabar (word / matter) of Yahawah () came to me, amar (spoke),

“Halak (move), and qaraa (called) in the azanay (ears) of Yarawashalam (Jerusalem), amar (spoke), ‘Thus amar (spoke) Yahawah (), “I zakar (remember) for you the chasad (grace) of your naiwar (youth), the ahabah (love) of your weddings; how you yalak (went) achar (other) me in the madabar (wilderness), in a aratz (Earth/land) that was not zarai (sown).

Yashar-Al (Israel) was qadash (set apart / make holy) to Yahawah (), the raashayath (beginning) fruits of his thabawaah (increase). Akal (eat) who devour him shall be asham (held) guilty. Rai (evil) shall bawaa (come) on them,”’ naam (declares prophetically) Yahawah ().”

Shamai (hearken / hear) the dabar (word / matter) of Yahawah (), O bayath (house) of Yaiqab (Jacob), and all the mashapachawath (families) of the bayath (house) of Yashar-Al (Israel)!

Thus amar (spoke) Yahawah (), “What iwal (unrighteousness) have your ab (father) matzaa (found) in me, that they have rachaq (gone) far from me, and have yalak (walked) achar (other) habal (vanity), and are habal (become) vain?

Neither did they amar (spoke), ‘Where is Yahawah () who ilah (go up / offer) us up out of the aratz (Earth/land) of Matzarayam (Egypt), who yalak (led) us through the madabar (wilderness), through a aratz (Earth/land) of irabah (deserts) and of shawachah (pits), through a aratz (Earth/land) of tzayah (drought) and of the shadow of tzalamawath (death), through a aratz (Earth/land) that ayash (man / husband) ibar (pass over/through) through, and where no ayash (man / husband) lived?’

I bawaa (bring) you into a karamal (plentiful) aratz (Earth/land), to akal (eat) its paray (fruit) and its goodness; but when you bawaa (bring), you tamaa (defiled) my aratz (Earth/land), and shawam (place / establish / appoint) my nachalah (heritage) an thawaibah (abomination).

The kahanayam (priests) didn't amar (spoke), ‘Where is Yahawah ()?’ And those who thapash (handle) the thawarah (instruction) didn't yadai (know) me. The raiyam (rulers) also pashai (transgressed) against me, and the nabayaayam (prophets) nabaa (prophesied) by Bail (Baal), and halak (move) achar (other) things that yail (do) not profit.

“Therefore I will yet rayab (contend) with you,” naam (declares prophetically) Yahawah (), “and I will rayab (contend) with your banay (childrens) banay (children).

For ibar (pass over/through) over to the ayay (islands) of Kathay (Kittim), and raah (see / saw); and shalach (send) to Qadar (Kedar), and bayan (between) maad (diligently); and raah (see / saw) if there has been such a thing.

Has a gaway (heathen / nation) mawar (changed) its Alahayam (), which really are no Alahayam ()? But my im (nation / people) have mawar (changed) their kabawad (glory) for that which yail (does) not profit.

“Be shamam (astonished), you shamayam (Shamayam / Heavens), at this, and be horribly shair (dread / storm / horror). Be very charab (desolate),” naam (declares prophetically) Yahawah ().

“For my im (nation / people) ishah (make) committed shanayam (two) raiwath (evils): they have forsaken me, the maqawar (spring) of chay (life) mayam (Waters), and chatzab (cut) them out baarawath (cisterns), shabar (broken) baarawath (cisterns), that kawal (all) hold no mayam (Waters).

Is Yashar-Al (Israel) a ibad (servant)? Is he a native-born slave? Madawai (for what reason?) Has he become a baz (prey)?

The young kaparayam (lions) have shaag (roared) at him, and yelled. They have shayath (put / appoint / make) his aratz (Earth/land) shamah (waste). His iyar (cities) are yatzath (burned) up, without yashab (inhabit/dwell).

The banay (my son) also of Nap (Memphis) and Thachapanachas (Tahpanhes) have raih (broken) the qadaqad (crown) of your head.

“Haven't you ishah (make) this to yourself, in that you have forsaken Yahawah () your Alahayam (), when he yalak (led) you by the darak (way)?

Now what have you to do in the darak (way) to Matzarayam (Matzarayam / Egypt), to shathah (drinks) the may (waters) of the Shayachawar (Shihor)? Or what have you to do in the darak (way) to Ashawar (Assyria), to shathah (drinks) the may (waters) of the nahar (river)?

“Your own rai (wickedness) shall yasar (correct) you, and your mashawabah (backsliding) shall yakach (reprove) you. Yadai (know) therefore and raah (see) that it is an rai (evil) thing and a mar (bitter), that you have forsaken Yahawah () your Alahayam (), and that my pachadah (fear) is not in you,” naam (declares prophetically) the Adanay (), Yahawah () of tzabaawath (armies).

“For of iwalam (eternity) time I have shabar (broken) your il (over), and nathaq (burst) your mawasar (bonds); and you amar (said), ‘I will not ibad (servant);’ for on every gabah (high) gabaih (hill) and under every rainan (green) itz (tree) you bowed yourself, zanah (playing) the prostitute.

Yet I had natai (planted) you a sharaq (noble) vine, wholly a amath (truth) zarai (seed). How then have you hapak (turned) into the sawar (degenerate) branches of a foreign gapan (vine) to me?

For though you kabas (wash) yourself with lye, and use much soap, yet your iwan (guilt/iniquity) is katham (marked) panayam (face) me,” naam (declares prophetically) the Adanay () Yahawah ().

“How can you amar (said), ‘I am not tamaa (defiled). I have not halak (move) achar (other) the Bail (Baals)’? Raah (see / saw) your darak (way) in the gayaa (valley). Yadai (know) what you ishah (make) done. You are a qal (swift) bakarah (dromedary) sharak (traversing) her darak (ways);

A paraa (wild) donkey used to the madabar (wilderness), that shaap (snuffs) up the rawach (spirit / wind) in her awah (desire). When she is in heat, who can shawab (turn) her away? All those who baqash (seek) her will not yaip (weary) themselves. In her chadash (month), they will matzaa (find) her.

“Manai (withhold) your ragal (feet / foot) from yachap (being) unshod, and your throat from tzamaah (thirst). But you amar (said), ‘It is in vain. No, for I have ahab (love) strangers, and I will yalak (go) achar (other) them.’

As the ganab (thief) is bashath (ashamed) when he is matzaa (found), so is the bayath (house) of Yashar-Al (Israel) bashath (ashamed); they, their malak (king), their shar (prince / ruler), and their kahan (priest), and their nabayaa (prophet/prophecy);

Who amar (said) itz (wood), ‘You are my ab (father);’ and a aban (stone), ‘You have yalad (birth / begot) me,’ out: for they have panah (turn) their irap (neck) to me, and not their panayam (face); but in the ith (time) of their rai (trouble) they will amar (said), ‘qawam (rise up), and yashai (salvation) us.’

“But where are your Alahayam () that you ishah (make) made for yourselves? Let them qawam (rise up), if they can yashai (salvation) you in the ith (time) of your rai (trouble): for according to the masapar (number) of your iyar (cities) are your Alahayam (), Yahawadah (Judah).

“Why will you rayab (contend) with me? You all have pashai (transgressed) against me,” naam (declares prophetically) Yahawah ().

“I have nakah (struck) your ban (son) in shawaa (vanity). They laqach (take / seize) no mawasar (correction). Your own charab (sword) has akal (eat) your nabayaa (prophet/prophecy), like a shachath (destroying) aray (lion).

Dawar (generation / age / period), raah (see) the dabar (word / matter) of Yahawah (). Have I been a madabar (wilderness) to Yashar-Al (Israel)? Or a aratz (Earth/land) of thick maapalayah (darkness)? Why do my im (nation / people) amar (spoke), ‘We rawad (have) broken loose. We will bawaa (come) to you no more?’

“Can a bathawalah (virgin) shakach (forget) her iday (ornament / adornment), or a kalah (complete / finish) her qashar (attire)? Yet my im (nation / people) have shakach (forgotten) me for yamayam (days) without masapar (number).

How yatab (well) you prepare your darak (way) to baqash (seek) ahabah (love)! Therefore you have lamad (teach / instruct) even the rai (wicked) women your darak (ways).

Also the dam (blood) of the napashawath (souls) of the naqay (innocent) abayawan (poor) is matzaa (found) in your kanap (skirts). You did not matzaa (find) them machatharath (breaking) in; but it is because of all these things.

“Yet you amar (said), ‘I am naqah (clean/innocent). Surely his ap (nostril / picture: bull snorting) has shawab (turn) away from me.’ “Behold, I will shapat (judge / judgement) you, because you amar (said), ‘I have not chataa (sinned).’

Why do you azal (go) about so much to shanah (change) your darak (way)? You will be bawash (ashamed) of Matzarayam (Matzarayam / Egypt) also, as you were bawash (ashamed) of Ashawar (Assyria).

From there also you shall yatzaa (go out / come out) forth, with your yad (hand) on your raash (head); for Yahawah () has maas (rejected) those in whom you mabatach (trust), and you shall not tzalach (prosper) with them.
