Judges 18 — English–Hebrew Parallel

In those yamayam (days) there was no malak (king) in Yashar-Al (Israel): and in those yamayam (days) the shabat (tribe) of the Danay (Danites) baqash (sought) an nachalah (inheritance) to yashab (inhabit/dwell) in; for to that yawam (day), their nachalah (inheritance) napal (fall / be cast down) not fallen to them thawak (midst) the shabatay (tribes) of Yashar-Al (Israel).

The banay (my son) of Dan (Dan) shalach (send) of their mashapachah (tribe / clan / family) chamash (five) banay (my son) from their whole number, banay (my son) of valor, from Tzaraih (Zorah), and from Ashathaal (Eshtaol), to ragal (spy) out the aratz (Earth/land), and to chaqar (search) it; and they amar (said) to them, “yalak (go), explore the aratz (Earth/land)!” They bawaa (bring) to the har (mountain) country of Aparayam (Ephraim), to the bayath (house) of Mayakah (Micah), and lawan (lodged) there.

When they were by the bayath (house) of Mayakah (Micah), they nakar (knew) the qawal (sound / voice) of the nair (young) man the Lawayay (Levite); and they sawar (turned) aside there, and amar (said) to him, “Who bawaa (bring) you here? What ishah (make) you do in this place? What do you have here?”

He amar (said) to them, “zah (this / that / these) and zah (this / that / these) has Mayakah (Micah) dealt with me, and he has shakar (hired) me, and I am become his kahan (priest).”

They amar (spoke) to him, “Please ask shaal (counsel) of Alahayam (), that we may yadai (know) whether our darak (way) which we halak (move) shall be prosperous.”

The kahan (priest) amar (spoke) to them, “yalak (go) in shalawam (peace / safety). Your darak (way) in which you yalak (go) is nakach (before) Yahawah ().”

Then the chamash (five) anashayam (men) departed, and bawaa (bring) to Layash (Laish), and raah (see / saw) the im (nation / people) who were qarab (among / near), how they lived in security, in the mashapat (way) of the Tzayadanay (Sidonians), shaqat (quiet) and batach (secure); for there was none in the aratz (Earth/land), yarash (possessing) authority, that might kalam (put) them to shame in anything, and they were rachawaq (far) from the Tzayadanay (Sidonians), and had no dealings with any adam (man).

They bawaa (bring) to their ach (brother/kinsman) to Tzaraih (Zorah) and Ashathaal (Eshtaol): and their ach (brother/kinsman) amar (said) to them, “What do you say?”

They amar (said), “qawam (rise up), and let us ilah (go up / offer) up against them; for we raah (see / saw) seen the aratz (Earth/land), and behold, it is very tawab (good / proper function). Do you stand still? Don't be itzal (slothful) to yalak (go) and to bawaa (bring) in to yarash (possess) the aratz (Earth/land).

When you bawaa (come), you shall bawaa (come) to a batach (secure) im (nation / people), and the aratz (Earth/land) is rachab (large); for Alahayam () nathan (give) given it into your yad (hand), a maqawam (place) where there is no machasawar (want) of anything that is in the aratz (Earth/land).”

There nasai (set) forth from there of the mashapachah (tribe / clan / family) of the Danay (Danites), out of Tzaraih (Zorah) and out of Ashathaal (Eshtaol), shash (six) maah (hundred) ayash (man / husband) girt with kalay (weapons) of malachamah (war).

They ilah (go up / offer) up, and chanah (encamped) in Kiriath Qarayath-Yairayam (Jearim), in Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah): therefore they qaraa (called) that maqawam (place) Machanahadan (Mahaneh Dan), to this yawam (day); behold, it is achar (other) Kiriath Qarayath-Yairayam (Jearim).

They ibar (pass over/through) there to the har (mountain) country of Aparayam (Ephraim), and bawaa (bring) to the bayath (house) of Mayakah (Micah).

Then the chamash (five) anashayam (men) who halak (move) to ragal (spy) out the aratz (Earth/land) of Layash (Laish) inah (answer / respond), and amar (said) to their ach (brother/kinsman), “Do you yadai (know) that there is in these bathayam (houses) an apawad (ephod), and tharapayam (teraphim), and an engraved pasal (image), and a masakah (molten) image? Now therefore yadai (consider) what you ishah (make) to do.”

They sawar (turned) aside there, and bawaa (bring) to the bayath (house) of the nair (young) man the Lawayay (Levite), even to the bayath (house) of Mayakah (Micah), and shaal (asked) him of his welfare.

The shash (six) maah (hundred) ayash (man / husband) girt with their kalay (weapons) of malachamah (war), who were of the banay (my son) of Dan (Dan), natzab (stood) by the pathach (entrance) of the shair (gate).

The chamash (five) anashayam (men) who halak (move) to ragal (spy) out the aratz (Earth/land) ilah (go up / offer) up, and bawaa (bring) in there, and laqach (take / seize) the engraved pasayal (image), and the apawad (ephod), and the tharapayam (teraphim), and the masakah (molten) image: and the kahan (priest) natzab (stood) by the pathach (entrance) of the shair (gate) with the shash (six) maah (hundred) anashayam (men) girt with kalay (weapons) of malachamah (war).

When these bawaa (bring) into Mayakah (Micah's) bayath (house), and laqach (take / seize) the engraved pasal (image), the apawad (ephod), and the tharapayam (teraphim), and the masakah (molten) image, the kahan (priest) amar (said) to them, “What are you ishah (make)?”

They amar (said) to him, “Hold your charash (peace), put your yad (hand) on your pah (mouth), and yalak (go) with us, and be to us a ab (father) and a kahan (priest). Is it tawab (good / proper function) for you to be kahan (priest) to the bayath (house) of achad (one) ayash (man / husband), or to be kahan (priest) to a shabat (tribe) and a mashapachah (tribe / clan / family) in Yashar-Al (Israel)?”

The kahan (priest) lab (heart) was yatab (glad), and he laqach (take / seize) the apawad (ephod), and the tharapayam (teraphim), and the engraved pasal (image), and bawaa (bring) in the qarab (among / near) of the im (nation / people).

So they panah (turn) and departed, and shawam (place / establish / appoint) the little tap (ones) and the livestock and the kabawadah (goods) panayam (face) them.

When they were a rachaq (good) way from the bayath (house) of Mayakah (Micah), the anashayam (men) who were in the bathayam (houses) near to Mayakah (Micah's) bayath (house) were zaiq (gathered) together, and overtook the banay (my son) of Dan (Dan).

They qaraa (called) to the banay (my son) of Dan (Dan). They sabab (turned) their panayam (face), and amar (said) to Mayakah (Micah), “What ails you, that you zaiq (come) with such a company?”

He amar (spoke), “You have laqach (take / seize) away my Alahayam () which I ishah (make), and the kahan (priest), and have yalak (gone) away, and what more do I have? How then do you amar (spoke) to me, ‘What ails you?’”

The banay (my son) of Dan (Dan) amar (said) to him, “Don't let your qawal (sound / voice) be shamai (hearken / hear) among us, lest mar (angry) anashayam (fellows) pagai (fall) on you, and you asap (lose) your napash (soul), with the lives of your bayath (house).”

The banay (my son) of Dan (Dan) yalak (went) their darak (way): and when Mayakah (Micah) raah (see / saw) that they were too chazaq (strong) for him, he panah (turn) and shawab (turn) back to his bayath (house).

They laqach (take / seize) that which Mayakah (Micah) ishah (make) made, and the kahan (priest) whom he bawaa (bring), and came to Layash (Laish), to a im (nation / people) shaqat (quiet) and batach (secure), and nakah (struck) them with the pah (edge) of the charab (sword); and they burnt the iyar (city) with ash (fire).

There was no deliverer, because it was rachawaq (far) from Tzayadawan (Sidon), and they had no dealings with any adam (man); and it was in the imaq (valley) that lies by Bayatharachawab (Beth Rehob). They banah (build) the iyar (city), and lived therein.

They qaraa (called) the sham (name) of the iyar (city) Dan (Dan), after the sham (name) of Dan (Dan) their ab (father), who was yalad (birth / begot) to Yashar-Al (Israel): however the sham (name) of the iyar (city) was Layash (Laish) at the raashawan (first).

The banay (my son) of Dan (Dan) qawam (rise up) up for themselves the engraved pasal (image): and Yawanathan (Jonathan), the ban (son) of Garasham (Gershom), the ban (son) of Manashah (Moses), he and his banay (my son) were kahanayam (priests) to the shabat (tribe) of the Danay (Danites) until the yawam (day) of the captivity of the aratz (Earth/land).

So they shawam (place / establish / appoint) them up Mayakah (Micah's) engraved pasal (image) which he ishah (make), all the yawam (day) that the bayath (house) of Alahayam () was in Shayalah (Shiloh).
