Judges 8 — English–Hebrew Parallel

The ayash (man / husband) of Aparayam (Ephraim) amar (said) to him, “mah (why) have you treated us this mah (way), that you didn't qaraa (called) us, when you halak (move) to lacham (fight) with Madayan (Midian)?” They rebuked him chazaqah (sharply).

He amar (said) to them, “What ishah (make) I now done in comparison with you? Isn't the gleaning of the grapes of Aparayam (Ephraim) tawab (good / proper function) than the batzayar (vintage) of Abayaizar (Abiezer)?

Alahayam () nathan (give) delivered into your yad (hand) the sharay (princes) of Madayan (Midian), Irab (Oreb) and Zaab (Zeeb)! What was I yakal (able) to ishah (make) in comparison with you?” Then their rawach (spirit / wind) was rapah (abated) toward him, when he had dabar (word / matter) that.

Gadaiwan (Gideon) bawaa (bring) to the Yaradan (Jordan), and ibar (pass over/through) over, he, and the shalawash (three) maah (hundred) ayash (man / husband) who were with him, iyap (faint), yet radap (pursuing).

He amar (said) to the anashay (men) of Sakawath (Succoth), “Please nathan (give) loaves of lacham (bread) to the im (nation / people) who ragal (feet / foot) me; for they are iyap (faint), and I am radap (pursuing) achar (other) Zabach (Zebah) and Tzalamanai (Zalmunna), the malakay (kings) of Madayan (Midian).”

The sharay (princes) of Sakawath (Succoth) amar (said), “Are the kap (hands) of Zabach (Zebah) and Tzalamanai (Zalmunna) now in your yad (hand), that we should nathan (give) lacham (bread) to your tzabaa (troop)?”

Gadaiwan (Gideon) amar (spoke), “Therefore when Yahawah () nathan (give) delivered Zabach (Zebah) and Tzalamanai (Zalmunna) into my yad (hand), then I will dawash (tear) your bashar (flesh) with the qawatzay (thorns) of the madabar (wilderness) and with baraqanayam (briers).”

He ilah (go up / offer) up there to Panawaal (Penuel), and dabar (word / matter) to them in the same way; and the anashay (men) of Panawaal (Penuel) inah (answer / respond) him as the anashay (men) of Sakawath (Succoth) had inah (answer / respond).

He amar (said) also to the anashay (men) of Panawaal (Penuel), amar (said), “When I shawab (turn) again in shalawam (peace / safety), I will nathatz (break) down this magadal (tower).”

Now Zabach (Zebah) and Tzalamanai (Zalmunna) were in Qaraqar (Karkor), and their machanah (armies) with them, about chamash (fifteen) alap (thousand) men, all who were yathar (left) of all the machanah (army) of the banay (my son) of the qadam (east); for there napal (fall / be cast down) one maah (hundred) isharayam (twenty) alap (thousand) ayash (man / husband) who shalap (drew) charab (sword).

Gadaiwan (Gideon) ilah (go up / offer) up by the darak (way) of those who lived in ahalayam (tents) on the qadam (east) of Nabach (Nobah) and Yagabahah (Jogbehah), and nakah (struck) the machanah (army); for the machanah (army) was batach (secure).

Zabach (Zebah) and Tzalamanai (Zalmunna) nawas (fled); and he radap (pursued) achar (other) them; and he lakad (took) the shanayam (two) malakay (kings) of Madayan (Midian), Zabach (Zebah) and Tzalamanai (Zalmunna), and confused all the machanah (army).

Gadaiwan (Gideon) the ban (son) of Yawaash (Joash) shawab (turn back / repent) from the malachamah (battle) from the ascent of Charas (Heres).

He lakad (caught) a nair (young) man of the anashay (men) of Sakawath (Succoth), and inquired of him: and he kathab (write) for him the sharay (princes) of Sakawath (Succoth), and its zaqan (elders), seventy-seven anashay (men).

He bawaa (bring) to the anashay (men) of Sakawath (Succoth), and amar (said), “See Zabach (Zebah) and Tzalamanai (Zalmunna), concerning whom you taunted me, amar (said), ‘Are the kap (hands) of Zabach (Zebah) and Tzalamanai (Zalmunna) now in your kap (hand), that we should nathan (give) lacham (bread) to your anashay (men) who are yaip (weary)?’”

He laqach (take / seize) the zaqanay (elders) of the iyar (city), and qawatzay (thorns) of the madabar (wilderness) and baraqanayam (briers), and with them he yadai (taught) the zaqanay (men) of Sakawath (Succoth).

He nathatz (broke) down the magadal (tower) of Panawaal (Penuel), and harag (kill) the anashay (men) of the iyar (city).

Then he amar (said) to Zabach (Zebah) and Tzalamanai (Zalmunna), “ayapah (what) kind of anashayam (men) were they whom you harag (kill) at Thabawar (Tabor)?” They amar (said), “They were kamaw (like) you. Achad (one) one thaar (resembled) the banay (my son) of a malak (king).”

He amar (spoke), “They were my ach (brother/kinsman), the banay (sons) of my am (mother). As Yahawah () chay (life), if you had chayah (saved) them alive, I would not harag (kill) you.”

He amar (said) to Yathar (Jether) his bakawar (firstborn), “qawam (rise up) up, and harag (kill) them!” But the youth didn't shalap (draw) his charab (sword); for he was yaraa (fear / be afraid), because he was yet a youth.

Then Zabach (Zebah) and Tzalamanai (Zalmunna) amar (said), “qawam (rise up) and pagai (fall) on us; for as the ayash (man / husband) is, so is his gabawarah (strength).” Gadaiwan (Gideon) qawam (rise up), and harag (kill) Zabach (Zebah) and Tzalamanai (Zalmunna), and laqach (take / seize) the crescents that were on their gamal (camels)’ tzawaaray (necks).

Then the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) amar (said) to Gadaiwan (Gideon), “mashal (rule/have dominion) over us, both you, and your ban (son), and your ban (son) ban (son) also; for you have yashai (salvation) us out of the yad (hand) of Madayan (Midian).”

Gadaiwan (Gideon) amar (spoke) to them, “I will not mashal (rule/have dominion) over you, neither shall my ban (son) mashal (rule/have dominion) over you. Yahawah () shall mashal (rule/have dominion) over you.”

Gadaiwan (Gideon) amar (said) to them, “I would make a shaalah (request) of you, that you nathan (give) give me every ayash (man / husband) the nazamay (earrings) of his shalal (spoil). (For they had zahab (gold) nazamay (earrings), because they were Yashamaialay (Ishmaelites).)

They amar (said), “We will nathan (give) nathan (give) them.” They parash (spread) a shamalah (garment), and every ayash (man / husband) shalak (threw) the nazam (earrings) of his shalal (spoil) into it.

The mashaqal (weight) of the zahab (gold) nazamay (earrings) that he shaal (requested) was one alap (thousand) and shabai (seven) maah (hundred) shekels of zahab (gold), besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the aragaman (purple) bagad (clothing) that was on the malakay (kings) of Madayan (Midian), and besides the inaqawath (chains) that were about their gamal (camels)’ tzawaaray (necks).

Gadaiwan (Gideon) ishah (make) an apawad (ephod) of it, and yatzag (put) it in his iyar (city), even in Iparah (Ophrah): and all Yashar-Al (Israel) zanah (played) the prostitute achar (other) it there; and it became a mawaqash (snare) to Gadaiwan (Gideon), and to his bayath (house).

So Madayan (Midian) was kanai (subdued) panayam (face) the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel), and they nashaa (lift) up their raash (head) no more. The aratz (Earth/land) had shaqat (rest) arabaiyam (forty) shanah (years) in the yamay (days) of Gadaiwan (Gideon).

Yarabail (Jerubbaal) the ban (son) of Yawaash (Joash) yalak (went) and lived in his own bayath (house).

Gadaiwan (Gideon) had shabaiyam (seventy) banayam (sons) conceived from his yarak (body); for he rab (had) many wives.

His payalagash (concubine) who was in Shakam (Shechem), she also yalad (birth / begot) him a ban (son), and he shawam (place / establish / appoint) him Abayamalak (Abimelech).

Gadaiwan (Gideon) the ban (son) of Yawaash (Joash) mawath (death) in a tawab (good / proper function) shayabah (old age / white hair - due to age) age, and was qabar (grave / tomb / sepulcher) in the tomb of Yawaash (Joash) his ab (father), in Iparah (Ophrah) of the abayahaizaray (abiezrites).

It happened, as soon as Gadaiwan (Gideon) was mawath (death), that the banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel) shawab (turn back / repent) again, and zanah (played) the prostitute achar (other) the Bail (Baals), and shawam (place / establish / appoint) Bailabarayath (Baal Berith) their Alahayam ().

The banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel) didn't zakar (remember) Yahawah () their Alahayam (), who had natzal (delivered) them out of the yad (hand) of all their ayab (enemy) on sabayab (surrounding) side;

Neither ishah (make) they show chasad (grace) to the bayath (house) of Yarabail (Jerubbaal), Gadaiwan (Gideon), according to all the goodness which he ishah (make) shown to Yashar-Al (Israel).
