2 Samuel 20 — English–Hebrew Parallel

1 There qaraa (called) to be there a base ayash (man / husband), whose sham (name) was shabai (sheba), the ban (son) of Bakaray (Bichri), a Benjamite: and he thaqai (blow / sound alarm) the shawapar (Shofar / Ram's horn), and amar (said), “We have no chalaq (portion) in Dawad (David), neither have we nachalah (inheritance) in the ban (son) of Yashay (Jesse). Ayash (man / husband) ayash (man / husband) to his ahal (tents), Yashar-Al (Israel)!”

2 So all the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) ilah (go up / offer) up from achar (other) Dawad (David), and achar (other) shabai (sheba) the ban (son) of Bakaray (Bichri); but the ayash (man / husband) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah) dabaq (joined) with their malak (king), from the Yaradan (Jordan) even to Yarawashalam (Yarawashalam / Jerusalem).

3 Dawad (David) bawaa (bring) to his bayath (house) at Yarawashalam (Yarawashalam / Jerusalem); and the malak (king) laqach (take / seize) the ishar (ten) nashayam (women) his palagashayam (concubines), whom he had yanach (left) to shamar (keep/guard) the bayath (house), and nathan (give) them in custody, and kawal (all) them with sustenance, but didn't bawaa (bring) in to them. So they were tzarar (shut) up to the yawam (day) of their mawath (death), chayawath (living) in alamanawath (widowhood).

4 Then the malak (king) amar (said) to Imashaa (Amasa), “zaiq (call) me the ayash (man / husband) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah) together within shalawash (three) yamayam (days), and be here imad (present).”

5 So Imashaa (Amasa) yalak (went) to zaiq (call) the men of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah) together; but he stayed longer than the mawaid (Feast/Holy Day) time which he had yaid (appointed) him.

6 Dawad (David) amar (spoke) to Abayashay (Abishai), “Now shabai (sheba) the ban (son) of Bakaray (Bichri) will do us more harm than Abayashalawam (Absalom) did. Laqach (take / seize) your Adawan () ibaday (servants), and radap (pursue) achar (other) him, lest he matzaa (get) himself batzar (fortified) irayam (cities), and natzal (escape) out of our iyan (eye).”

7 There yatzaa (go out / come out) out achar (other) him Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) anashay (men), and the Karathay (Cherethites) and the Palathay (Pelethites), and all the gabawar (mighty) men; and they yatzaa (go out / come out) out of Yarawashalam (Yarawashalam / Jerusalem), to radap (pursue) achar (other) shabai (sheba) the ban (son) of Bakaray (Bichri).

8 When they were at the gadawal (very great/important/mighty) aban (stone) which is in Gabaiwan (Gibeon), Imashaa (Amasa) bawaa (bring) to panayam (face) them. Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) was clothed in his apparel of war that he had put on, and on it was a sash with a charab (sword) tzamad (fastened) on his waist in its thair (razor); and as he yatzaa (go out / come out) forth it yatzaa (go out / come out) out.

9 Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) amar (said) to Imashaa (Amasa), “Is it shalawam (peace / safety) with you, my ach (brother/kinsman)?” Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) achaz (took) Imashaa (Amasa) by the zaqan (beard) with his yamayan (right hand) yad (hand) to nashaq (kiss) him.

10 But Imashaa (Amasa) shamar (keep/guard) no heed to the charab (sword) that was in Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) yad (hand). So he nakah (struck) him with it in the body, and shapak (shed) out his maih (bowels) to the aratz (Earth/land), and didn't shanah (strike) him again; and he mawath (death). Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) and Abayashay (Abishai) his ach (brother/kinsman) radap (pursued) achar (other) shabai (sheba) the ban (son) of Bakaray (Bichri).

11 There imad (stood) by him ayash (man / husband) of Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) nair (young) men, and amar (said), “He who favors Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab), and he who is for Dawad (David), let him achar (other) Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab)!”

12 Imashaa (Amasa) lay galal (wallowing) in his dam (blood) in the thawak (midst) of the masalah (highway). When the ayash (man / husband) raah (see / saw) that all the im (nation / people) imad (stood) still, he sabab (carried) Imashaa (Amasa) out of the masalah (highway) into the shadah (field), and shalak (cast) a bagad (garment) over him, when he raah (see / saw) that everyone who bawaa (bring) by him imad (stood) still.

13 When he was yagah (removed) out of the masalah (highway), all the ayash (man / husband) ibar (pass over/through) on achar (other) Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab), to radap (pursue) achar (other) shabai (sheba) the ban (son) of Bakaray (Bichri).

14 He ibar (pass over/through) through all the shabatay (tribes) of Yashar-Al (Israel) to Abal (Abel), and to Bayathamaikah (Beth Maacah), and all the barayam (berites): and they were qalah (gathered) together, and bawaa (bring) also achar (other) him.

15 They bawaa (bring) and tzawar (besieged) him in Abal (Abel) of Bayathamaikah (Beth Maacah), and they shapak (cast) up a mound against the iyar (city), and it imad (stood) against the chayal (rampart); and all the im (nation / people) who were with Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) shachath (battered) the chawamah (wall), to napal (fall / be cast down) it down.

16 Then a chakam (wise) ayashah (woman / wife) qaraa (called) out of the iyar (city), “shamai (hearken / hear), shamai (hearken / hear)! Please amar (said) to Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab), ‘qarab (come close) near here, that I may dabar (word / matter) with you.’”

17 He qarab (come close) near to her; and the ayashah (woman / wife) amar (said), “Are you Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab)?” He amar (said), “I am.” Then she amar (said) to him, “shamai (hearken / hear) the dabaray (words) of your handmaid.” He amar (said), “I do shamai (hearken / hear).”

18 Then she amar (said), amar (said), “They were used to dabar (word / matter) in raashawan (old) times, ‘They shall shaal (surely) shaal (ask) counsel at Abal (Abel);’ and so they settled it.

19 I am among those who are shalam (peaceable) and aman (believe / have faith) in Yashar-Al (Israel). You baqash (seek) to mawath (death) a iyar (city) and a am (mother) in Yashar-Al (Israel). Why will you balai (swallow) up the nachalah (inheritance) of Yahawah ()?”

20 Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) inah (answer / respond), “chalayalah (far) be it, chalayalah (far) be it from me, that I should balai (swallow) up or shachath (destroy).

21 The dabar (word / matter) is not so. But a ayash (man / husband) of the har (mountain) country of Aparayam (Ephraim), shabai (sheba) the ban (son) of Bakaray (Bichri) by sham (name), has nashaa (lift) up his yad (hand) against the malak (king), even against Dawad (David). Nathan (give) him only, and I will depart from the iyar (city).” The ayashah (woman / wife) amar (said) to Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab), “Behold, his raash (head) shall be shalak (thrown) to you over the chawamah (wall).”

22 Then the ayashah (woman / wife) bawaa (bring) to all the im (nation / people) in her chakamah (wisdom). They karath (cut) off the raash (head) of shabai (sheba) the ban (son) of Bakaray (Bichri), and shalak (threw) it out to Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab). He thaqai (blow / sound alarm) the shawapar (Shofar / Ram's horn), and they were pawatz (dispersed) from the iyar (city), every ayash (man / husband) to his ahal (tent). Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) shawab (turn) to Yarawashalam (Yarawashalam / Jerusalem) to the malak (king).

23 Now Yawaab (Yawaab / Joab) was over all the tzabaa (troop) of Yashar-Al (Israel); and Banayah (Benaiah) the ban (son) of Yahawayadai (Jehoiada) was over the Karay (Cherethites) and over the Palathay (Pelethites);

24 And Adaram (Adoram) was over the men subject to forced mas (labor); and Yahawashapat (Jehoshaphat) the ban (son) of Achayalawad (Ahilud) was the zakar (remember);

25 And Shayaa (Sheva) was sapar (book); and Tzadawaq (Zadok) and Abayathar (Abiathar) were kahanayam (priests);

26 And also Iyaraa (Ira) the yaaray (jairite) was kahan (priest) minister to Dawad (David).
