Kings 20 — English–Hebrew Parallel

Banahadad (Ben Hadad) the malak (king) of Aram (Syria) qabatz (gathered) all his chayal (wealth / substance / capability / valor) qabatz (together); and there were shalawashayam (thirty) - shanayam (two) malak (king) with him, and sawas (horses) and rakab (chariots): and he ilah (go up / offer) up and tzawar (besieged) Shamarawan (Samaria), and lacham (fought) against it.

He shalach (send) malaakayam (messengers) to Achaab (Ahab) malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel), into the iyar (city), and said to him, “Thus says Ben Hadad (),

‘Your kasap (silver) and your zahab (gold) is mine. Your wives also and your ban (son), even the tawab (good / proper function), are mine.’”

The malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel) inah (answer / respond), “It is according to your amar (spoke), my Adawan (), O malak (king). I am yours, and all that I have.”

The malaakayam (messengers) shawab (turn) again, and amar (said), “Banahadad (Ben Hadad) yaamaraw (says), ‘I shalach (send) amar (said) to you, saying, “You shall nathan (give) me your kasap (silver), and your zahab (gold), and your wives, and your ban (son);

But I will shalach (send) my ibad (servant) to you machar (tomorrow) about this ith (time), and they shall chapash (search) your bayath (house), and the bathay (houses) of your ibad (servant); and it shall be, that whatever is machamad (pleasant) in your iyan (eye), they shall shawam (place / establish / appoint) it in their yad (hand), and laqach (take / seize) it away.”’”

Then the malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel) qaraa (called) all the zaqanay (elders) of the aratz (Earth/land), and amar (said), “Please notice how this man baqash (seeks) rai (mischief); for he shalach (send) to me for my wives, and for my ban (son), and for my kasap (silver), and for my zahab (gold); and I didn't manai (deny) him.”

All the zaqanayam (elders) and all the im (nation / people) amar (said) to him, “Don't shamai (hearken / hear), neither abah (be willing / desire).”

Therefore he amar (spoke) to the malaakay (messengers) of Banahadad (Ben Hadad), “amar (spoke) my Adawan () the malak (king), ‘All that you shalach (send) for to your ibad (servant) at the raashawan (first) I will ishah (make); but this thing I cannot ishah (make).’” The malaakay (messengers) departed, and shawab (turn back / repent) him shawab (turn back / repent) the dabar (word / matter).

Banahadad (Ben Hadad) shalach (send) to him, and amar (spoke), “The Alahayam () ishah (make) so to me, and more also, if the ipar (dust) of Shamarawan (Samaria) shall sapaq (suffice) for shailayam (handfuls) for all the im (nation / people) who ragal (feet / foot) me.”

The malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel) inah (answer / respond), “dabar (word / matter) him, ‘Don't let him who chagar (puts) on his armor brag like he who takes it off.’”

It happened, when Ben Hadad () shamai (hearken / hear) this dabar (word / matter), as he was shathah (drinks), he and the malakayam (kings), in the sakawath (pavilions), that he amar (spoke) to his ibad (servant), “Prepare to attack!” They prepared to attack the iyar (city).

Behold, a nabayaa (prophet/prophecy) nagash (came) near to Achaab (Ahab) malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel), and amar (spoke), “Thus amar (spoke) Yahawah (), ‘raah (see) you seen all this gadawal (very great/important/mighty) hamawan (multitude)? Behold, I will nathan (give) it into your yad (hand) this yawam (day); and you shall yadai (know) that I am Yahawah ().’”

Achaab (Ahab) amar (spoke), “By whom?” He amar (spoke), “Thus amar (spoke) Yahawah (), ‘By the nair (young) men of the sharay (princes) of the madayanawath (provinces).’” Then he amar (spoke), “Who shall begin the malachamah (battle)?” He amar (spoke), “You.”

Then he mustered the nair (young) men of the sharay (princes) of the madayanawath (provinces), and they were shanayam (two) maah (hundred) and shalawashayam (thirty) - shanayam (two). Achar (other) them, he mustered all the im (nation / people), even all the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel), being shabai (seven) alap (thousand).

They yatzaa (go out / come out) out at tzahar (noon). But Banahadad (Ben Hadad) was shathah (drinks) himself shakawar (drunk) in the sakawath (pavilions), he and the malakayam (kings), the shalawashayam (thirty) - shanayam (two) malakayam (kings) who izar (helped) him.

The nair (young) men of the sharay (princes) of the madayanawath (provinces) yatzaa (go out / come out) out raashawan (first); and Banahadad (Ben Hadad) shalach (send) out, and they nagad (told) him, amar (said), “anashayam (men) are yatzaa (go out / come out) out from Shamarawan (Samaria).”

He amar (said), “If they yatzaa (go out / come out) come out for shalawam (peace / safety), thapash (take) them chay (life); or if they yatzaa (go out / come out) come out for malachamah (war), thapash (take) them chay (life).”

So these yatzaa (go out / come out) out of the iyar (city), the nair (young) men of the sharay (princes) of the madayanawath (provinces), and the chayal (wealth / substance / capability / valor) which achar (other) them.

They ayash (man / husband) nakah (killed) his ayash (man / husband). The Aram (Syrians) nawas (fled), and Yashar-Al (Israel) radap (pursued) them. Banahadad (Ben Hadad) the malak (king) of Aram (Syria) malat (escaped) on a sawas (horse) with horsemen.

The malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel) yatzaa (go out / come out) out, and nakah (struck) the sawas (horses) and rakab (chariots), and nakah (killed) the Aram (Syrians) with a gadawal (very great/important/mighty) makah (slaughter).

The nabayaa (prophet/prophecy) nagash (came) near to the malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel), and amar (said) to him, “yalak (go), chazaq (strengthen) yourself, and yadai (mark), and raah (see / saw) what you ishah (make); for at the thashawabah (return) of the shanah (year) the malak (king) of Aram (Syria) will ilah (go up / offer) up against you.”

The ibaday (servants) of the malak (king) of Aram (Syria) amar (spoke) to him, “Their Alahayam () is a Alahayam () of the harayam (hills); therefore they were chazaq (stronger) than we. But let us lacham (fight) against them in the mayashawar (plain), and laa (NOT) we shall be chazaq (stronger) than they.

Ishah (make) this thing: sawar (take) the malakayam (kings) away, every ayash (man / husband) out of his maqawam (place), and shawam (place / establish / appoint) pachawath (captains) in their place.

Muster an chayal (wealth / substance / capability / valor), like the chayal (wealth / substance / capability / valor) that you napal (fall / be cast down) lost, sawas (horse) for sawas (horse), and rakab (chariot) for rakab (chariot). We will lacham (fight) against them in the mayashawar (plain), and surely we will be chazaq (stronger) than them.” He shamai (hearken / hear) to their qawal (sound / voice), and ishah (make) so.

It happened at the thashawabah (return) of the shanah (year), that Banahadad (Ben Hadad) mustered the Aram (Syrians), and ilah (go up / offer) up to Apaq (Aphek), to malachamah (fight) against Yashar-Al (Israel).

The banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) were mustered, and were kawal (all), and yalak (went) qaraah (against) them. The banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) chanah (encamped) before them like shanayam (two) chashap (little) flocks of young izayam (goats); but the Aram (Syrians) malaa (filled) the aratz (Earth/land).

A ayash (man / husband) of Alahayam () nagash (came) near and amar (spoke) to the malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel), and amar (spoke), “Thus amaraw (says) Yahawah (), ‘Because the Aram (Syrians) have amar (spoke), “Yahawah () is a Alahayam () of the harayam (hills), but he is not a Alahayam () of the imaqayam (valleys);” therefore I will nathan (give) all this gadawal (very great/important/mighty) hamawan (multitude) into your yad (hand), and you shall yadai (know) that I am Yahawah ().’”

They chanah (encamped) alah (these) over nakach (against) the other shabai (seven) yamayam (days). So it was, that in the shabayaiy (seventh) yawam (day) the malachamah (battle) was qarab (come close); and the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) nakah (killed) one maah (hundred) alap (thousand) footmen of the Aram (Syrians) in achad (one) yawam (day).

But the yathar (rest) nawas (fled) to Apaq (Aphek), into the iyar (city); and the chawamah (wall) napal (fall / be cast down) on isharayam (twenty) - shabai (seven) alap (thousand) ayash (man / husband) who were yathar (left). Banahadad (Ben Hadad) nawas (fled), and bawaa (bring) into the iyar (city), into an chadar (inner) room.

His ibad (servant) amar (said) to him, “See now, we have shamai (hearken / hear) that the malakay (kings) of the bayath (house) of Yashar-Al (Israel) are chasad (grace) malakay (kings). Please let us shawam (place / establish / appoint) sackcloth on our bodies, and chabalayam (ropes) on our raash (head), and yatzaa (go out / come out) out to the malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel). Maybe he will chayah (save) your napash (soul).”

So they chagar (put) sackcloth on their bodies and chabalayam (ropes) on their raash (head), and bawaa (bring) to the malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel), and amar (said), “Your ibad (servant) Banahadad (Ben Hadad) yaamaraw (says), ‘Please chayah (let) me live.’” He amar (said), “Is he still chay (life)? He is my ach (brother/kinsman).”

Now the anashayam (men) nachash (observed) diligently, and hurried to take this phrase; and they amar (said), “Your ach (brother/kinsman) Banahadad (Ben Hadad).” Then he amar (said), “bawaa (bring), laqach (take / seize) him.” Then Banahadad (Ben Hadad) yatzaa (go out / come out) out to him; and he ilah (go up / offer) him to come up into the marakabah (chariot).

Ben Hadad () amar (spoke) to him, “The irayam (cities) which my ab (father) laqach (take / seize) from your ab (father) I will shawab (turn back / repent). You shall shawam (place / establish / appoint) chawatzawath (streets) for yourself in Damashaq (Damascus), as my ab (father) shawam (place / establish / appoint) in Shamarawan (Samaria).” “I”, said Achaab (Ahab), “will shalach (send) you go with this barayath (covenant).” So he karath (cut) a barayath (covenant) with him, and shalach (send) him go.

A achad (one) ayash (man / husband) of the banay (sons) of the nabayaayam (prophets) amar (spoke) to his rai (neigbor/another person) by the dabar (word / matter) of Yahawah (), “Please nakah (strike) me!” The ayash (man / husband) maan (refused) to nakah (strike) him.

Then he amar (spoke) to him, “Because you have not shamai (hearken / hear) the qawal (sound / voice) of Yahawah (), behold, as soon as you are departed from me, a aray (lion) shall nakah (kill) you.” As soon as he was departed from him, a aray (lion) matzaa (found) him, and nakah (killed) him.

Then he matzaa (found) achar (other) ayash (man / husband), and amar (said), “Please nakah (strike) me.” The ayash (man / husband) nakah (struck) him, nakah (smiting) and patzai (wounding) him.

So the nabayaa (prophet/prophecy) departed, and waited for the malak (king) by the darak (way), and disguised himself with his headband over his iyan (eye).

As the malak (king) ibar (pass over/through) by, he tzaiq (cried) to the malak (king); and he amar (said), “Your ibad (servant) yatzaa (go out / come out) out into the qarab (among / near) of the malachamah (battle); and behold, a ayash (man / husband) sawar (turned) aside, and bawaa (bring) a ayash (man / husband) to me, and amar (said), ‘Guard this ayash (man / husband)! If by any paqad (visit) he be paqad (visit), then your napash (soul) shall be for his napash (soul), or else you shall shaqal (pay) a kakar (talent) of kasap (silver).’

As your ibad (servant) was ishah (make) here and there, he was ayan (NO ONE).” The malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel) amar (said) to him, “So your mashapat (judgment) shall be; you yourself have charatz (decided) it.”

He hurried, and took the headband sawar (away) from his iyan (eye); and the malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel) recognized that he was of the nabaayam (prophets).

He amar (spoke) to him, “Thus amar (spoke) Yahawah (), ‘Because you have shalach (send) go out of your yad (hand) the ayash (man / husband) whom I charam (had) devoted to destruction, therefore your napash (soul) shall go for his napash (soul), and your im (nation / people) for his im (nation / people).’”

The malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel) yalak (went) to his bayath (house) sullen and angry, and bawaa (bring) to Shamarawan (Samaria).
