2 Kings 18 — English–Hebrew Parallel

1 Now it happened in the shalawash (three) shanah (year) of Hawashai (Hoshea) ban (son) of Alah (these) malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel), that Chazaqayah (Hezekiah) the ban (son) of Achaz (Ahaz) malak (king) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah) began to malak (king).

2 He was isharayam (twenty) - chamash (five) shanah (years) ban (son) when he began to malak (king); and he malak (king) isharayam (twenty) - thashai (nine) shanah (years) in Yarawashalam (Yarawashalam / Jerusalem): and his am (mother) sham (name) was Abay (Abi) the banath (daughter) of Zakarayah (Zechariah).

3 He ishah (make) that which was yashar (upright) in the iyanay (eyes) of Yahawah (), according to all that Dawad (David) his ab (father) ishah (make) done.

4 He sawar (removed) the bamah (high) places, and shabar (broke) the matzabath (pillars), and karath (cut) down the Asharah (Asherah): and he kathath (broke) in pieces the bronze nachash (serpent) that Mashah (Moses) ishah (make) made; for in those yamayam (days) the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) qatar (burned) incense to it; and he qaraa (called) it Nachashathan (Nehushtan).

5 He batach (trusted) in Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of Yashar-Al (Israel); so that achar (other) him was none like him among all the malakay (kings) of Yahawadah (Judah), nor among them that were panayam (face) him.

6 For he dabaq (joined) with Yahawah (); he didn't sawar (depart) from achar (other) him, but shamar (keep/guard) his matzawah (commandments), which Yahawah () tzawah (commanded) Mashah (Moses).

7 Yahawah () was with him; wherever he yatzaa (go out / come out) forth he shakal (prospered): and he marad (rebelled) against the malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria), and didn't ibad (servant) him.

8 He nakah (struck) the Palashathay (Philistines) to Izah (Gaza) and its gabawal (border/boundary), from the magadal (tower) of the watchmen to the fortified iyar (city).

9 It happened in the rabayaiy (fourth) shanah (year) of malak (king) Chazaqayah (Hezekiah), which was the shabayaiy (seventh) shanah (year) of Hawashai (Hoshea) ban (son) of Alah (these) malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel), that Shalamanaasar (Shalmaneser) malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria) ilah (go up / offer) up against Shamarawan (Samaria), and tzawar (besieged) it.

10 At the qatzah (end / extremity / border) of shalawash (three) shanayam (two) they lakad (took) it: in the shash (six) shanah (year) of Chazaqayah (Hezekiah), which was the thashai (nine) shanah (year) of Hawashai (Hoshea) malak (king) of Yashar-Al (Israel), Shamarawan (Samaria) was lakad (taken).

11 The malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria) carried Yashar-Al (Israel) away to Ashawar (Assyria), and nachah (put) them in Chalach (Halah), and on the Chabawar (Habor), the nahar (river) of Gawazan (Gozan), and in the iray (cities) of the Maday (Medes),

12 Because they didn't shamai (hearken / hear) the qawal (sound / voice) of Yahawah () their Alahayam (), but ibar (pass over/through) his barayath (covenant), even all that Mashah (Moses) the ibad (servant) of Yahawah () tzawah (commanded), and would not shamai (hearken / hear) it, nor ishah (make) it.

13 Now in the fourteenth shanah (year) of malak (king) Chazaqayah (Hezekiah), Sanacharayab (Sennacherib) malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria) ilah (go up / offer) up against all the batzar (fortified) iray (cities) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah), and thapash (took) them.

14 Chazaqayah (Hezekiah) malak (king) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah) shalach (send) to the malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria) to Lakayash (Lachish), amar (said), “I have chataa (offended); shawab (turn) from me. That which you nathan (give) on me, I will nashaa (lift).” The malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria) shawam (place / establish / appoint) to Chazaqayah (Hezekiah) malak (king) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah) shalawash (three) maah (hundred) kakar (talents) of kasap (silver) and shalawashayam (thirty) kakar (talents) of zahab (gold).

15 Chazaqayah (Hezekiah) nathan (give) him all the kasap (silver) that was matzaa (found) in the bayath (house) of Yahawah (), and in the atzarawath (treasures) of the malak (king) bayath (house).

16 At that ith (time), Chazaqayah (Hezekiah) qatzatz (cut) off the gold from the dalathawath (doors) of the hayakal (temple) of Yahawah (), and from the amanawath (pillars) which Chazaqayah (Hezekiah) malak (king) of Yahawadah (Judah) had overlaid, and nathan (give) it to the malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria).

17 The malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria) shalach (send) tharathan (tartan) and rabasarayas (rabsaris) and Rabashaqah (Rabshakeh) from Lakayash (Lachish) to malak (king) Chazaqayah (Hezekiah) with a kabad (great) chayal (army) to Yarawashalam (Yarawashalam / Jerusalem). They ilah (go up / offer) up and bawaa (bring) to Yarawashalam (Yarawashalam / Jerusalem). When they had ilah (go up / offer) up, they bawaa (bring) and imad (stood) by the thailah (conduit) of the ilayawan (Most High) barakah (pool), which is in the masalah (highway) of the kabas (fuller's) shadah (field).

18 When they had qaraa (called) to the malak (king), there yatzaa (go out / come out) out to them Alayaqayam (Eliakim) the ban (son) of Chalaqayah (Hilkiah), who was over the bayath (house), and Shabanaa (Shebnah) the sapar (book), and Yawaach (Joah) the ban (son) of Asap (Asaph) the zakar (remember).

19 Rabashaqah (Rabshakeh) amar (said) to them, “amar (said) now to Chazaqayah (Hezekiah), ‘Thus amaraw (says) the gadawal (very great/important/mighty) malak (king), the malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria), “What batachawan (confidence) is this in which you batach (trust)?

20 You amar (said) (but they are but vain dabar (word / matter)), ‘There is itzah (counsel) and gabawarah (strength) for malachamah (war).’ Now on whom do you batach (trust), that you have marad (rebelled) against me?

21 Now, behold, you batach (trust) in the mashainah (staff) of this ratzatz (bruised) qanah (reed), even in Matzarayam (Matzarayam / Egypt). If a ayash (man / husband) samak (leans) on it, it will bawaa (bring) into his kap (hand), and naqab (pierce) it. So is Paraih (Pharaoh) malak (king) of Matzarayam (Matzarayam / Egypt) to all who batach (trust) on him.

22 But if you amar (spoke) me, ‘We batach (trust) in Yahawah () our Alahayam ();’ isn't that he whose bamah (high) places and whose mazabach (altars) Chazaqayah (Hezekiah) has sawar (taken) away, and has amar (spoke) to Yahawadah (Judah) and to Yarawashalam (Jerusalem), ‘You shall shachah (worship) panayam (face) this mazabach (altar) in Yarawashalam (Jerusalem)?’

23 Now therefore, please irab (evening) pledges to my adawan (master / lord) the malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria), and I will nathan (give) you two alap (thousand) sawasayam (horses), if you are yakal (able) on your part to nathan (give) riders on them.

24 How then can you shawab (turn) away the panayam (face) of achad (one) pachah (captain) of the qatan (small / young / least) of my adawan (master / lord) ibaday (servant of), and batach (put) your trust on Matzarayam (Matzarayam / Egypt) for rakab (chariots) and for horsemen?

25 Have I now ilah (go up / offer) up balaiday (without) Yahawah () against this maqawam (place) to shachath (destroy) it? Yahawah () amar (spoke) to me, ‘ilah (go up / offer) up against this aratz (Earth/land), and shachath (destroy) it.’”’”

26 Then Alayaqayam (Eliakim) the ban (son) of Chalaqayah (Hilkiah), and Shabanaa (Shebnah), and Yawaach (Joah), amar (said) to Rabashaqah (Rabshakeh), “Please dabar (word / matter) to your ibad (servant) in the Aramayath (Syrian) language; for we shamai (hearken / hear) it. Don't dabar (word / matter) with us in the Yahawadayath (Jews)’ language, in the azan (ear) of the im (nation / people) who are on the chawamah (wall).”

27 But Rabashaqah (Rabshakeh) amar (said) to them, “Has my adawan (master / lord) shalach (send) me to your adawan (master / lord), and to you, to dabar (word / matter) these dabarayam (words)? Hasn't he sent me to the anashayam (men) who yashab (inhabit/dwell) on the chawamah (wall), to akal (eat) their own charayayawanayam (dung), and to shathah (drinks) their own water with you?”

28 Then Rabashaqah (Rabshakeh) imad (stood), and qaraa (called) with a gadawal (very great/important/mighty) qawal (sound / voice) in the Yahawadayath (Jews)’ language, and dabar (word / matter), amar (said), “shamai (hearken / hear) the dabar (word / matter) of the gadawal (very great/important/mighty) malak (king), the malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria).

29 Thus amar (said) the malak (king), ‘Don't let Chazaqayah (Hezekiah) nashaa (lift) you; for he will not be yakal (able) to natzal (deliver) you out of his yad (hand).

30 Neither let Chazaqayah (Hezekiah) batach (make) you trust in Yahawah (), amar (spoke), “Yahawah () will natzal (surely) natzal (deliver) us, and this iyar (city) shall not be nathan (give) into the yad (hand) of the malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria).”

31 Don't shamai (hearken / hear) to Chazaqayah (Hezekiah).’ For thus amar (said) the malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria), ‘ishah (make) your barakah (peace) with me, and yatzaa (go out / come out) out to me; and everyone of you akal (eat) of his gapan (vine), and everyone of his thaan (fig) tree, and everyone shathah (drinks) the may (waters) of his own bawar (cistern);

32 Until I bawaa (come) and laqach (take / seize) you away to a aratz (Earth/land) like your own aratz (Earth/land), a aratz (Earth/land) of grain and new thayarawash (wine), a aratz (Earth/land) of lacham (bread) and karamayam (vineyards), a aratz (Earth/land) of zayath (olive) trees and of dabash (honey), that you may chayah (live), and not mawath (death). Don't shamai (hearken / hear) to Chazaqayah (Hezekiah), when he sawath (persuades) you, amar (spoke), “Yahawah () will natzal (deliver) us.”

33 Has any of the Alahayam () of the gawayam (nations) ever natzal (delivered) his aratz (Earth/land) out of the yad (hand) of the malak (king) of Ashawar (Assyria)?

34 Where are the Alahayam () of Chamath (Hamath), and of Arapad (Arpad)? Where are the Alahayam () of Saparawayam (Sepharvaim), of Hanai (Hena), and Iwah (Ivvah)? Have they natzal (delivered) Shamarawan (Samaria) out of my yad (hand)?

35 Who are they among all the Alahayam () of the aratzawath (countries), that have natzal (delivered) their aratz (Earth/land) out of my yad (hand), that Yahawah () should natzal (deliver) Yarawashalam (Jerusalem) out of my yad (hand)?’”

36 But the im (nation / people) held their charash (peace), and inah (answer / respond) him not a dabar (word / matter); for the malak (king) matzawah (commandment) was, “Don't inah (answer / respond) him.”

37 Then Alayaqayam (Eliakim) the ban (son) of Chalaqayah (Hilkiah), who was over the bayath (house), bawaa (bring) with Shabanaa (Shebna) the sapar (book), and Yawaach (Joah) the ban (son) of Asap (Asaph) the zakar (remember), to Chazaqayah (Hezekiah) with their clothes qarai (torn), and nagad (told) him the dabaray (words) of Rabashaqah (Rabshakeh).
