Exodus 21 — English–Hebrew Parallel

1 “Now these are the mashapatayam (ordinances) which you shall shawam (place / establish / appoint) panayam (face) them.

2 “If you qanah (buy) a ibaray (hebrew) ibad (servant), he shall ibad (servant) shash (six) shanayam (two) and in the shabayaiy (seventh) he shall yatzaa (go out / come out) out chapashay (free) chanam (without) paying anything.

3 If he bawaa (bring) in by gap (himself), he shall yatzaa (go out / come out) out by gap (himself). If he is bail (married), then his ayashah (woman / wife) shall yatzaa (go out / come out) out with him.

4 If his adawan (master / lord) nathan (give) him a ayashah (woman / wife) and she yalad (birth / begot) him banayam (sons) or banawath (daughters), the ayashah (woman / wife) and her banayam (children) shall be her adawan (master / lord), and he shall yatzaa (go out / come out) out by gap (himself).

5 But if the ibad (servant) shall amar (said) amar (said), ‘I ahab (love) my adawan (master / lord), my ayashah (woman / wife), and my ban (son). I will not yatzaa (go out / come out) out chapashay (free);’

6 Then his adawan (master / lord) shall nagash (bring) him to Alahayam (), and shall nagash (bring) him to the dalath (door) or to the doorpost, and his adawan (master / lord) shall ratzai (bore) his azan (ear) through with an awl, and he shall ibad (servant) him for iwalam (forever).

7 “If a ayash (man / husband) makar (sells) his banath (daughter) to be a female amah (servant), she shall not yatzaa (go out / come out) out as the male ibadayam (servants) do.

8 If she doesn't rai (please) her adawan (master / lord), who has married her to himself, then he shall padah (let) her be redeemed. He shall mashal (rule/have dominion) no right to makar (sell) her to a foreign im (nation / people), since he has dealt bagad (deceitfully) with her.

9 If he marries her to his ban (son), he shall ishah (make) with her as a banath (daughter).

10 If he laqach (take / seize) achar (other) wife to himself, he shall not garai (diminish) her shaar (food), her clothing, and her marital rights.

11 If he doesn't ishah (make) these shalawash (three) things for her, she may yatzaa (go out / come out) chanam (free) without paying any kasap (money).

12 “One who nakah (strikes) a ayash (man / husband) so that he mawath (death) shall mawath (death) be put to mawath (death),

13 But not if it is unintentional, but Alahayam () allows it to happen: then I will shawam (place / establish / appoint) you a maqawam (place) where he shall nawas (flee).

14 If a ayash (man / husband) schemes and comes zawad (presumptuously) on his neighbor to harag (kill) him, you shall laqach (take / seize) him from my mazabach (altar), that he may mawath (death).

15 “Anyone who attacks his ab (father) or his am (mother) shall be mawath (death) put to mawath (death).

16 “Anyone who kidnaps someone and makar (sells) him, or if he is matzaa (found) in his yad (hand), he shall mawath (death) be put to mawath (death).

17 “Anyone who qalal (curses) his ab (father) or his am (mother) shall mawath (death) be put to mawath (death).

18 “If anashayam (men) quarrel and ayash (man / husband) nakah (strikes) the other with a aban (stone), or with his agarap (fist), and he doesn't mawath (death), but is confined to mashakab (bed);

19 If he qawam (rise up) again and halak (move) around with his mashainah (staff), then he who nakah (struck) him shall be cleared: only he shall nathan (give) for the shabath (shabath / rest) of his time, and shall provide for his healing until he is rapaa (thoroughly) rapaa (healed).

20 “If a ayash (man / husband) nakah (strikes) his ibad (servant) or his amah (maid) with a shabat (rod), and he mawath (death) under his yad (hand), he shall naqam (surely) be naqam (punished).

21 Ak (notwithstanding), if he gets up after a yawam (day) or yawam (day), he shall not be naqam (punished), for he is his property.

22 “If anashayam (men) fight and nagap (hurt) a pregnant ayashah (woman / wife) so that she gives birth prematurely, and yet no harm follows, he shall be inash (surely) fined as much as the ayashah (woman / wife) bail (husband) demands and the palalayam (judges) allow.

23 But if any harm follows, then you must nathan (give) napash (soul) for napash (soul),

24 Iyan (eye) for iyan (eye), shan (tooth) for shan (tooth), yad (hand) for yad (hand), ragal (feet / foot) for ragal (feet / foot),

25 Kawayah (burning) for kawayah (burning), patzai (wound) for patzai (wound), and chabawarah (bruise) for chabawarah (bruise).

26 “If a ayash (man / husband) nakah (strikes) his ibad (servant) iyan (eye), or his amah (maid's) iyan (eye), and shachath (destroys) it, he shall shalach (send) him go chapashay (free) for his iyan (eye) sake.

27 If he strikes out his male ibad (servant) shan (tooth), or his female amah (servant's) shan (tooth), he shall shalach (send) him go chapashay (free) for his shan (tooth's) sake.

28 “If a shawar (bull) nagach (gores) a ayash (man / husband) or a ayashah (woman / wife) to mawath (death), the shawar (bull) shall saqal (surely) be saqal (stoned), and its bashar (flesh) shall not be akal (eat); but the owner of the shawar (bull) shall not be held responsible.

29 But if the shawar (bull) had a habit of goring in the thamawal (past), and it has been iwad (admonish/bear witness against) to its owner, and he has not shamar (keep/guard) it in, but it has mawath (death) a ayash (man / husband) or a ayashah (woman / wife), the shawar (bull) shall be saqal (stoned), and its owner shall also be put to mawath (death).

30 If a kapar (ransom) is shayath (put / appoint / make) on him, then he shall nathan (give) for the padayawam (redemption) of his napash (soul) whatever is shayath (put / appoint / make) on him.

31 Whether it has nagach (gored) a ban (son) or has nagach (gored) a banath (daughter), according to this mashapat (judgment) it shall be ishah (make) to him.

32 If the shawar (bull) nagach (gores) a male ibad (servant) or a female amah (servant), shalawashayam (thirty) shaqalayam (shekels) of kasap (silver) shall be nathan (give) to their adawan (master / lord), and the shawar (ox) shall be saqal (stoned).

33 “If a ayash (man / husband) pathach (opens) a bawar (pit), or if a ayash (man / husband) karah (digs) a bawar (pit) and doesn't kasah (cover) it, and a shawar (bull) or a donkey napal (fall / be cast down) into it,

34 The owner of the bawar (pit) shall make it shalam (good). He shall shawab (turn) kasap (money) to its owner, and the mawath (death) animal shall be his.

35 “If one ayash (man / husband) shawar (bull) injures rai (neigbor/another person), so that it mawath (death), then they shall makar (sell) the chay (life) shawar (bull), and chatzah (divide) its kasap (price); and they shall also chatzah (divide) the mawath (death) animal.

36 Or if it is yadai (known) that the shawar (bull) was in the habit of goring in the thamawal (past), and its owner has not shamar (keep/guard) it in, he shall shalam (surely) shalam (pay) shawar (bull) for shawar (bull), and the mawath (death) animal shall be his own.
