Deuteronomy 1 — English–Hebrew Parallel

These are the dabarayam (words) which Mashah (Moses) dabar (word / matter) to all Yashar-Al (Israel) ibar (beyond) the Yaradan (Jordan) in the madabar (wilderness), in the irabah (arabah) over mawal (against) Suph, between Paaran (Paran), and Thapal (Tophel), and Laban (Laban), and Chatzarawath (Hazeroth), and Dayazahab (Dizahab).

It is achad (one) yawam (day)’ journey from Charab (Horeb) by the darak (way) of har (mountain) Shaiyar (Seir) to Qadash-Baranai (Kadesh Barnea).

It happened in the fortieth shanah (year), in the ishathay (eleven) chadash (month), on the achad (one) day of the chadash (month), that Mashah (Moses) dabar (word / matter) to the banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel), according to all that Yahawah () had tzawah (given) him in commandment to them;

Achar (other) he had nakah (struck) Sayachawan (Sihon) the malak (king) of the Amaray (Amaray / Amorite), who lived in Chashabawan (Heshbon), and Iwag (Og) the malak (king) of Bashan (Bashan), who lived in Ishatharawath (Ashtaroth), at Adaraiy (Edrei).

Ibar (beyond) the Yaradan (Jordan), in the aratz (Earth/land) of Mawaab (Moab), yaal (began) Mashah (Moses) to baar (declare) this thawarah (Torah / Instruction), amar (said),

“Yahawah () our Alahayam () dabar (word / matter) to us in Charab (Horeb), amar (spoke), ‘You have lived rab (long) enough in this har (mountain):

Panah (turn), and take your nasai (journey), and bawaa (bring) to the har (mountain) country of the Amaray (Amaray / Amorite), and to all the places near there, in the irabah (arabah), in the har (mountain) shapalah (country), and in the lowland, and in the nagab (south), and by the seashore, the aratz (Earth/land) of the Kanainay (Canaanite), and Labanawan (Lebanon), as gadawal (very great/important/mighty) as the great nahar (river), the nahar (river) Parath (Euphrates).

Raah (see), I nathan (give) set the aratz (Earth/land) panayam (face) you: bawaa (come) in and yarash (possess) the aratz (Earth/land) which Yahawah () shabai (swear / take oath) to your ab (father), to Abaraham (Abraham), to Yatzachaq (Isaac), and to Yaiqab (Jacob), to nathan (give) to them and to their zarai (seed) achar (other) them.’”

I amar (said) to you at that ith (time), amar (said), “I am not yakal (able) to nashaa (lift) you myself bad (alone):

Yahawah () your Alahayam () rabah (has) multiplied you, and behold, you are this yawam (day) as the kawakabay (stars) of the sky for rab (multitude).

Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of your ab (father), make you a alap (thousand) paimayam (times) as many as you are, and barak (blessed) you, as he has dabar (word / matter) you!

Ayak (how) can I myself alone nashaa (lift) your encumbrance, and your mashaa (burden), and your rayab (strife)?

Yahab (take) chakam (wise) anashayam (men) of bayan (between) and well yadai (known) according to your shabat (tribes), and I will shawam (place / establish / appoint) them raash (head) over you.”

You inah (answer / respond) me, and amar (said), “The thing which you have amar (said) is tawab (good / proper function) to ishah (make).”

So I laqach (take / seize) the raashay (heads) of your shabat (tribes), chakam (wise) raashay (men), and yadai (known), and nathan (give) them raashay (heads) over you, sharay (captains) of alapayam (thousands), and sharay (captains) of maawath (hundreds), and sharay (captains) of chamashayam (fifties), and sharay (captains) of isharath (tens), and shatarayam (officers), according to your shabat (tribes).

I tzawah (commanded) your shapatatham (judges) at that ith (time), amar (said), “shamai (hearken / hear) cases between your ach (brother/kinsman), and shapat (judge / judgement) righteously between a ayash (man / husband) and his ach (brother/kinsman), and the foreigner who is living with him.

You shall not show partiality in mashapat (judgment); you shall shamai (hearken / hear) the qatan (small / young / least) and the gadawal (very great/important/mighty) alike; you shall not be gawar (afraid) of the panayam (face) of ayash (man / husband); for the mashapat (judgment) is Alahayam (). The dabar (word / matter) that is too qashah (rough / hard) for you, you shall qarab (come close) to me, and I will shamai (hearken / hear) it.”

I tzawah (commanded) you at that ith (time) all the things which you should ishah (make).

We traveled from Charab (Horeb), and yalak (went) through all that gadawal (very great/important/mighty) and yaraa (fear / be afraid) madabar (wilderness) which you raah (see), by the darak (way) to the har (mountain) country of the Amaray (Amorites), as Yahawah () our Alahayam () tzawah (commanded) us; and we bawaa (come) to Qadash-Baranai (Kadesh Barnea).

I amar (spoke) to you, “You bawaa (come) come to the har (mountain) country of the Amaray (Amorites), which Yahawah () our Alahayam () nathan (give) to us.

Raah (see), Yahawah () your Alahayam () nathan (give) set the aratz (Earth/land) panayam (face) you: ilah (go up / offer) up, take yarash (possession), as Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of your ab (father), has dabar (word / matter) to you; don't be yaraa (fear / be afraid), neither be chathath (dismayed).”

You qarab (come close) near to me everyone of you, and amar (said), “shalach (send) us send anashayam (men) panayam (face) us, that they may chapar (search) the aratz (Earth/land) for us, and shawab (turn) us dabar (word / matter) again of the darak (way) by which we must ilah (go up / offer) up, and the irayam (cities) to which we shall bawaa (bring).”

The thing yatab (pleased) me well; and I laqach (take / seize) shanayam (two) anashayam (men) of you, achad (one) ayash (man / husband) for ayash (man / husband) tribe:

And they panah (turn) and ilah (go up / offer) up into the har (mountain) country, and bawaa (bring) to the nachal (stream / river) of Ashakal (Eshcol), and ragal (spied) it out.

They laqach (take / seize) of the paray (fruit) of the aratz (Earth/land) in their yad (hand), and yarad (brought) it down to us, and shawab (turn back / repent) us dabar (word / matter) again, and amar (spoke), “It is a tawab (good / proper function) aratz (Earth/land) which Yahawah () our Alahayam () nathan (give) to us.”

Yet you wouldn't ilah (go up / offer) up, but marah (rebelled) against the commandment of Yahawah () your Alahayam ():

And you ragan (murmured) in your ahal (tents), and amar (spoke), “Because Yahawah () shanaah (hated) us, he yatzaa (go out / come out) brought us forth out of the aratz (Earth/land) of Matzarayam (Egypt), to nathan (give) us into the yad (hand) of the Amaray (Amorites), to shamad (destroy) us.

Where are we ilah (go up / offer) up? Our ach (brother/kinsman) have made our labab (heart) to masas (melt), amar (said), ‘The im (nation / people) are greater and rawam (will lift up) than we; the irayam (cities) are gadawal (very great/important/mighty) and batzar (fortified) up to the sky; and moreover we raah (see / saw) seen the banay (my son) of the inaqay (anakim) there.’”

Then I amar (said) to you, “Don't iratz (dread), neither be yaraa (fear / be afraid) of them.

Yahawah () your Alahayam () who halak (move) panayam (face) you, he will lacham (fight) for you, according to all that he ishah (make) for you in Matzarayam (Egypt) before your iyan (eye),

And in the madabar (wilderness), where you raah (see) seen how that Yahawah () your Alahayam () nashaa (lift) you, as a ayash (man / husband) does nashaa (lift) his ban (son), in all the darak (way) that you halak (move), until you bawaa (come) to this maqawam (place).”

Yet in this thing you didn't aman (believe / have faith) Yahawah () your Alahayam (),

Who halak (move) panayam (face) you in the darak (way), to thawar (seek) you out a maqawam (place) to pitch your chanah (tents) in, in ash (fire) by layal (night), to show you by what darak (way) you should yalak (go), and in the inan (cloud) by yawamam (by day).

Yahawah () shamai (hearken / hear) the qawal (sound / voice) of your dabar (word / matter), and was qatzap (angry), and shabai (swear / take oath), amar (spoke),

“Surely not ayash (man / husband) of these anashayam (men) of this rai (evil) dawar (generation / age / period) shall raah (see / saw) the tawab (good / proper function) aratz (Earth/land), which I shabai (swear / take oath) to nathan (give) to your ab (father),

Except Kalab (Caleb) the ban (son) of Yapanah (Jephunneh): he shall raah (see) it; and to him will I nathan (give) the aratz (Earth/land) that he has darak (trodden) on, and to his ban (son), because he malaa (has) wholly achar (other) Yahawah ().”

Also Yahawah () was anap (angry) with me for your sakes, amar (spoke), “You also shall not bawaa (come) in there:

Yahawashawai (Joshua) the ban (son) of Nawan (Nun), who imad (stands) panayam (face) you, he shall bawaa (bring) in there: chazaq (encourage) you him; for he shall cause Yashar-Al (Israel) to nachal (inherit) it.

Moreover your little tap (ones), whom you amar (said) should be a baz (prey), and your ban (son), who this yawam (day) have no yadai (knowledge) of tawab (good / proper function) or rai (evil), they shall bawaa (bring) in there, and to them will I nathan (give) it, and they shall yarash (possess) it.

But as for you, panah (turn), and take your nasai (journey) into the madabar (wilderness) by the darak (way) to the sawap (red) yam (sea/waters).”

Then you inah (answer / respond) and amar (spoke) to me, “We have chataa (sinned) against Yahawah (), we will ilah (go up / offer) up and lacham (fight), according to all that Yahawah () our Alahayam () tzawah (commanded) us.” Every ayash (man / husband) of you chagar (put) on his kalay (weapons) of malachamah (war), and presumed to ilah (go up / offer) up into the har (mountain) country.

Yahawah () amar (spoke) to me, “amar (spoke) them, ‘Don't ilah (go up / offer) up, neither lacham (fight); for I am not qarab (among / near) you; lest you be nagap (struck) panayam (face) your ayab (enemy).’”

So I dabar (word / matter) to you, and you didn't shamai (hearken / hear); but you marah (rebelled) against the commandment of Yahawah (), and were presumptuous, and ilah (go up / offer) up into the har (mountain) country.

The Amaray (Amaray / Amorite), who lived in that har (mountain) country, yatzaa (go out / come out) out qaraah (against) you, and radap (chased) you, as dabarayam (bees) ishah (make), and kathath (beat) you down in Shaiyar (Seir), even to Charamah (Hormah).

You shawab (turn back / repent) and bakah (wept) panayam (face) Yahawah (); but Yahawah () didn't shamai (hearken / hear) to your qawal (sound / voice), nor azan (ear) ear to you.

So you stayed in Qadash (set apart / make holy) many yamayam (days), according to the yamayam (days) that you yashab (inhabit/dwell).
