Joshua 1 — English–Hebrew Parallel

Now it happened achar (other) the mawath (death) of Mashah (Moses) the ibad (servant) of Yahawah (), that Yahawah () amar (spoke) to Yahawashawai (Joshua) the ban (son) of Nawan (Nun), Mashah (Moses)’ sharath (servant), amar (spoke),

“Mashah (Moses) my ibad (servant) is mawath (death); now therefore qawam (rise up), ibar (pass over/through) over this Yaradan (Jordan), you, and all this im (nation / people), to the aratz (Earth/land) which I nathan (give) to them, even to the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel).

I nathan (give) given you every maqawam (place) that the kap (sole) of your ragal (feet / foot) will darak (tread) on, as I dabar (word / matter) Mashah (Moses).

From the madabar (wilderness), and this Labanawan (Lebanon), even to the gadawal (very great/important/mighty) nahar (river), the nahar (river) Parath (Euphrates), all the aratz (Earth/land) of the Chathay (Hittites), and to the gadawal (very great/important/mighty) yam (sea/waters) toward the mabawaa (going) down of the shamash (sun), shall be your gabawal (border/boundary).

No ayash (man / husband) will be yatzab (able) to stand panayam (face) you all the yamay (days) of your chay (life). As I was with Mashah (Moses), so I will be with you. I will not rapah (fail) you nor izab (forsake) you.

“Be chazaq (strong) and amatz (courageous); for you shall cause this im (nation / people) to nachal (inherit) the aratz (Earth/land) which I shabai (swear / take oath) to their ab (father) to nathan (give) them.

Only be chazaq (strong) and very amatz (courageous), to shamar (keep/guard) to ishah (make) according to all the thawarah (Torah / Instruction), which Mashah (Moses) my ibad (servant) tzawah (commanded) you. Don't sawar (turn) from it to the right yamayan (right hand) or to the shamaawal (left hand), that you may have shakal (good) success wherever you yalak (go).

This sapar (book / scribed document) of the thawarah (Torah / Instruction) shall not depart out of your pah (mouth), but you shall hagah (meditate) on it yawamam (by day) and layal (night), that you may shamar (keep/guard) to ishah (make) according to all that is kathab (write) therein: for then you shall tzalach (make) your darak (way) prosperous, and then you shall have shakal (good) success.

Haven't I tzawah (commanded) you? Be chazaq (strong) and amatz (courageous). Don't be iratz (afraid), neither be chathath (dismayed): for Yahawah () your Alahayam () is with you wherever you yalak (go).”

Then Yahawashawai (Joshua) tzawah (commanded) the shataray (officers) of the im (nation / people), amar (said),

“Ibar (pass over/through) qarab (among / near) the midst of the machanah (camp), and tzawah (command) the im (nation / people), amar (spoke), ‘kawan (prepare) food; for within shalawash (three) yamayam (days) you are to ibar (pass over/through) over this Yaradan (Jordan), to bawaa (come) in to yarash (possess) the aratz (Earth/land), which Yahawah () your Alahayam () nathan (give) you to yarash (possess) it.’”

Yahawashawai (Joshua) amar (said) to the Raawabanay (Reubenites), and to the Gaday (Gadites), and to the chatzay (half) - shabat (tribe) of Manashah (Manasseh), amar (said),

“Zakar (remember) the dabar (word / matter) which Mashah (Moses) the ibad (servant) of Yahawah () tzawah (commanded) you, amar (spoke), ‘Yahawah () your Alahayam () gives you nawach (rest), and will nathan (give) you this aratz (Earth/land).

Your wives, your little tap (ones), and your livestock, shall live in the aratz (Earth/land) which Mashah (Moses) nathan (give) you ibar (beyond) the Yaradan (Jordan); but you shall ibar (pass over/through) over panayam (face) your ach (brother/kinsman) chamash (armed), all the gabawar (mighty) chayal (wealth / substance / capability / valor) of valor, and shall izar (help) them

Until Yahawah () nawach (has) given your ach (brother/kinsman) nawach (rest), as he nawach (has) given you, and they have also yarash (possessed) the aratz (Earth/land) which Yahawah () your Alahayam () nathan (give) them. Then you shall shawab (turn back / repent) to the aratz (Earth/land) of your yarashah (possession), and possess it, which Mashah (Moses) the ibad (servant) of Yahawah () nathan (give) you ibar (beyond) the Yaradan (Jordan) toward the sunrise.’”

They inah (answer / respond) Yahawashawai (Joshua), amar (said), “All that you have tzawah (commanded) us we will ishah (make), and wherever you shalach (send) us we will yalak (go).

Just as we shamai (hearken / hear) to Mashah (Moses) in all things, so will we shamai (hearken / hear) to you. Only may Yahawah () your Alahayam () be with you, as he was with Mashah (Moses).

Ayash (man / husband) marah (rebels) against your commandment, and doesn't shamai (hearken / hear) to your dabar (word / matter) in all that you tzawah (command) him, he shall be put to mawath (death). Only be chazaq (strong) and amatz (courageous).”
