Joshua 7 — English–Hebrew Parallel

But the banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel) mail (top/above) a mail (top/above) in the charam (devoted) things; for Ikan (Achan), the ban (son) of Karamay (Carmi), the ban (son) of Zabaday (Zabdi), the ban (son) of Zarach (Zerah), of the matah (staff / rod / tribe) of Yahawadah (Judah), laqach (take / seize) some of the charam (devoted) things. Therefore Yahawah () ap (nostril / picture: bull snorting) charah (hot with anger) against the banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel).

Yahawashawai (Joshua) shalach (send) anashayam (men) from Yarayachaw (Jericho) to Iy (Ai), which is im (nation / people) Bayathaawan (Beth Aven), on the qadam (east) side of Bayath-Al (Bethel), and amar (said) to them, amar (said), “ilah (go up / offer) up and ragal (spy) out the aratz (Earth/land).” The anashayam (men) ilah (go up / offer) up and ragal (spied) out Iy (Ai).

They shawab (turn) to Yahawashawai (Joshua), and amar (said) to him, “Don't let all the im (nation / people) ilah (go up / offer) up; but let about two or shalawash (three) alap (thousand) ayash (man / husband) ilah (go up / offer) up and nakah (strike) Iy (Ai). Don't make all the im (nation / people) to toil there, for there are only a mait (few) of them.”

So about shalawash (three) alap (thousand) anashay (men) of the im (nation / people) ilah (go up / offer) up there, and they nawas (fled) panayam (face) the anashay (men) of Iy (Ai).

The anashay (men) of Iy (Ai) nakah (struck) about shalawashayam (thirty) - shash (six) anashay (men) of them, and they radap (chased) them from panayam (face) the shair (gate) even to Shabarayam (Shebarim), and nakah (struck) them at the descent. The labab (hearts) of the im (nation / people) masas (melted), and became like mayam (Waters).

Yahawashawai (Joshua) qarai (tore) his clothes, and napal (fall / be cast down) to the aratz (Earth/land) on his panayam (face) panayam (face) the arawan (ark) of Yahawah () until the irab (evening), he and the zaqanay (elders) of Yashar-Al (Israel); and they ilah (go up / offer) ipar (dust) on their raash (head).

Yahawashawai (Joshua) amar (spoke), “ahah (alas), Adanay () Yahawah (), why ibar (pass over/through) you brought this im (nation / people) over the Yaradan (Jordan) at ibar (pass over/through), to nathan (give) us into the yad (hand) of the Amaray (Amorites), to cause us to abad (destroy / perish)? I wish that we had been yaal (content) and lived ibar (beyond) the Yaradan (Jordan)!

Oh, Adanay (), what shall I amar (spoke), achar (other) that Yashar-Al (Israel) has hapak (turned) their irap (neck) panayam (face) their ayab (enemy)!

For the Kanainay (Canaanite) and all the yashabay (inhabitants) of the aratz (Earth/land) will shamai (hearken / hear) of it, and will surround us, and karath (cut) off our sham (name) from the aratz (Earth/land). What will you ishah (make) for your gadawal (very great/important/mighty) sham (name)?”

Yahawah () amar (spoke) to Yahawashawai (Joshua), “qawam (rise up) up! Why are you napal (fall / be cast down) on your panayam (face) like that?

Yashar-Al (Israel) has chataa (sinned). Yes, they ibar (pass over/through) even transgressed my barayath (covenant) which I tzawah (commanded) them. Yes, they have even laqach (take / seize) of the charam (devoted) things, and have also ganab (stolen), and also kachash (deceived). They have even shawam (place / establish / appoint) it among their own kalay (stuff).

Therefore the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) can't qawam (rise up) panayam (face) their ayab (enemy). They panah (turn) their irap (neck) panayam (face) their ayab (enemy), because they charam (have) become devoted for destruction. I will not be with you any more, unless you shamad (destroy) the charam (devoted) things from qarab (among / near) you.

Qawam (rise up) up! Qadash (set apart / make holy) the im (nation / people), and amar (spoke), ‘qadash (set apart / make holy) yourselves for machar (tomorrow), for Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of Yashar-Al (Israel), amar (spoke), “There is a charam (devoted) thing in the qarab (among / near) of you, Yashar-Al (Israel). You cannot qawam (rise up) panayam (face) your ayab (enemy) until you sawar (take) away the charam (devoted) thing from qarab (among / near) you.”

In the baqar (morning) therefore you shall be qarab (come close) near by your shabat (tribes). It shall be that the shabat (tribe) which Yahawah () selects shall qarab (come close) near by mashapachawath (families). The mashapachah (tribe / clan / family) which Yahawah () selects shall qarab (come close) near by bathayam (households). The bayath (house) which Yahawah () selects shall qarab (come close) near gabar (man) by gabar (man).

It shall be, that he who is lakad (taken) with the charam (devoted) thing shall be burnt with ash (fire), he and ibar (pass over/through) that he has, because he has transgressed the barayath (covenant) of Yahawah (), and because he ishah (make) done a disgraceful thing in Yashar-Al (Israel).’”

So Yahawashawai (Joshua) shakam (rose) up early in the baqar (morning) and qarab (come close) Yashar-Al (Israel) near by their shabat (tribes). The shabat (tribe) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah) was selected.

He qarab (come close) near the mashapachah (tribe / clan / family) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah); and he selected the mashapachah (tribe / clan / family) of the Zerahites. He qarab (come close) near the mashapachah (tribe / clan / family) of the Zerahites gabar (man) by gabar (man), and Zabaday (Zabdi) was selected.

He qarab (come close) near his bayath (house) gabar (man) by gabar (man), and Ikan (Achan), the ban (son) of Karamay (Carmi), the ban (son) of Zabaday (Zabdi), the ban (son) of Zarach (Zerah), of the matah (staff / rod / tribe) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah), was selected.

Yahawashawai (Joshua) amar (spoke) to Ikan (Achan), “My ban (son), please shawam (place / establish / appoint) kabawad (glory) to Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of Yashar-Al (Israel), and nathan (give) thawadah (confession) to him. Nagad (tell) me now what you ishah (make) done! Don't kachad (hide) it from me!”

Ikan (Achan) inah (answer / respond) Yahawashawai (Joshua), and amar (spoke), “I have truly chataa (sinned) against Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of Yashar-Al (Israel), and this is what I ishah (make) done.

When I raah (see / saw) among the shalal (spoil) a tawab (good / proper function) Shanair (Babylonian) adarath (robe), two maah (hundred) shaqalayam (shekels) of kasap (silver), and a lashawan (tongue / language) of zahab (gold) weighing chamashayam (fifty) shaqalayam (shekels), then I chamad (coveted) them and laqach (take / seize) them. Behold, they are taman (hidden) in the aratz (Earth/land) in the thawak (midst) of my ahal (tent), with the kasap (silver) under it.”

So Yahawashawai (Joshua) shalach (send) malaakayam (messengers), and they rawatz (ran) to the ahal (tent). Behold, it was taman (hidden) in his ahal (tent), with the kasap (silver) under it.

They laqach (take / seize) them from the thawak (midst) of the ahal (tent), and bawaa (come) them to Yahawashawai (Joshua) and to all the banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel). They yatzaq (laid) them down panayam (face) Yahawah ().

Yahawashawai (Joshua), and all Yashar-Al (Israel) with him, laqach (take / seize) Ikan (Achan) the ban (son) of Zarach (Zerah), the kasap (silver), the adarath (robe), the lashawan (tongue / language) of zahab (gold), his ban (son), his banath (daughter), his cattle, his donkeys, his tzaan (sheep), his ahal (tent), and all that he had; and they ilah (go up / offer) them up to the imaq (valley) of Ikawar (Achor).

Yahawashawai (Joshua) amar (spoke), “mah (why) have you ikar (troubled) us? Yahawah () will ikar (trouble) you this.” yawam (day). All Yashar-Al (Israel) ragam (stoned) him with abanayam (stones), and they sharap (burned) them with ash (fire) and saqal (stoned) them with abanayam (stones).

They qawam (rise up) over him a gadawal (very great/important/mighty) gal (heap) of abanayam (stones) that remains to this yawam (day). Yahawah () shawab (turn back / repent) from the charawan (fierceness) of his ap (nostril / picture: bull snorting). Therefore the sham (name) of that maqawam (place) was qaraa (called) “The imaq (valley) of Ikawar (Achor)” to this yawam (day).
