Joshua 9 — English–Hebrew Parallel

It happened, when all the malakayam (kings) who were ibar (beyond) the Yaradan (Jordan), in the har (mountain) country, and in the lowland, and on all the chawap (shore) of the gadawal (very great/important/mighty) yam (sea/waters) in mawal (front) of Labanawan (Lebanon), the Chathay (Hittite), the Amaray (Amaray / Amorite), the Kanainay (Canaanite), the Parazay (Perizzite), the Chaway (Hivite), and the Yabawasay (Jebusite), shamai (hearken / hear) of it

That they qabatz (gathered) themselves yachad (together) to lacham (fight) with Yahawashawai (Joshua) and with Yashar-Al (Israel), with achad (one) pah (accord).

But when the yashabay (inhabitants) of Gabaiwan (Gibeon) shamai (hearken / hear) what Yahawashawai (Joshua) ishah (make) done to Yarayachaw (Jericho) and to Iy (Ai),

They also resorted to a ruse, and yalak (went) and tzayar (made) as if they had been ambassadors, and laqach (take / seize) balah (old) shaqayam (sacks) on their donkeys, and wineskins, balah (old) and baqai (torn) and tzarar (bound) up,

And balah (old) and patched nailawath (shoes) on their ragal (feet / foot), and wore balah (old) shalamawath (garments). All the lacham (bread) of their provision was yabash (dry land) and moldy.

They yalak (went) to Yahawashawai (Joshua) to the machanah (camp) at Galagal (Gilgal), and amar (said) to him, and to the ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel), “We bawaa (bring) come from a rachawaq (far) aratz (Earth/land). Now therefore karath (cut) a barayath (covenant) with us.”

The ayash (man / husband) of Yashar-Al (Israel) amar (said) to the Chaway (Hivites), “What if you live qarab (among / near) us. How could we karath (cut) a barayath (covenant) with you?”

They amar (said) to Yahawashawai (Joshua), “We are your ibad (servant).” Yahawashawai (Joshua) amar (said) to them, “Who are you? Ayan (NO ONE) do you bawaa (bring) from?”

They amar (spoke) to him, “Your ibad (servant) bawaa (come) come from a very rachawaq (far) aratz (Earth/land) because of the sham (name) of Yahawah () your Alahayam (); for we have shamai (hearken / hear) of his shamai (fame), all that he ishah (make) in Matzarayam (Egypt),

And all that he ishah (make) to the shanayam (two) malakay (kings) of the Amaray (Amaray / Amorite) who were ibar (beyond) the Yaradan (Jordan), to Sayachawan (Sihon) malak (king) of Chashabawan (Heshbon) and to Iwag (Og) malak (king) of Bashan (Bashan), who was at Ishatharawath (Ashtaroth).

Our zaqan (elders) and all the yashabay (inhabitants) of our aratz (Earth/land) amar (said) to us, amar (said), ‘laqach (take / seize) tzayadah (provision) in your hand for the darak (journey), and yalak (go) to qaraah (meet) them, and amar (said) them, “We are your ibad (servant). Now karath (cut) a barayath (covenant) with us.”’

This our lacham (bread) we took cham (hot) for our provision out of our bayath (house) on the yawam (day) we yatzaa (go out / come out) out to yalak (go) to you; but now, behold, it is yabash (dry land), and has become moldy.

These wineskins, which we malaa (filled), were chadash (new); and behold, they are baqai (torn). These our shalamah (Solomon - Patriarch) and our nail (shoes) have balah (become) old because of the very rab (long) darak (journey).”

The anashayam (men) sampled their provisions, and didn't shaal (ask) counsel from the pah (mouth) of Yahawah ().

Yahawashawai (Joshua) ishah (make) shalawam (peace / safety) with them, and ishah (make) a barayath (covenant) with them, to chayah (let) them live. The nashayaay (princes) of the idah (congregation) shabai (swear / take oath) to them.

It happened at the qatzah (end / extremity / border) of shalawash (three) yamayam (days) achar (other) they had karath (cut) a barayath (covenant) with them, that they shamai (hearken / hear) that they were their neighbors, and that they lived qarab (among / near) them.

The banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel) traveled and bawaa (bring) to their iyar (cities) on the shalayashay (third) yawam (day). Now their iyar (cities) were Gabaiwan (Gibeon), Kapayarah (Chephirah), Baarawath (Beeroth), and Kiriath Qarayath-Yairayam (Jearim).

The banay (children) of Yashar-Al (Israel) didn't nakah (strike) them, because the nashayaay (princes) of the idah (congregation) had shabai (swear / take oath) to them by Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of Yashar-Al (Israel). All the idah (congregation) lawan (murmured) against the nashayaay (princes).

But all the nashayaayam (princes) amar (spoke) to all the idah (congregation), “We have shabai (swear / take oath) to them by Yahawah (), the Alahayam () of Yashar-Al (Israel): now therefore we may not nagai (touch) them.

This we will ishah (make) to them, and chayah (let) them live; lest qatzap (wrath) be on us, because of the shabawaih (oath) which we shabai (swear / take oath) to them.”

The nashayaayam (princes) amar (said) to them, “chayah (let) them live,” so they became itz (wood) cutters and drawers of mayam (Waters) for all the idah (congregation), as the nashayaayam (princes) had dabar (word / matter) to them.

Yahawashawai (Joshua) qaraa (called) for them, and he dabar (word / matter) to them, amar (said), “Why have you ramah (deceived) us, amar (said), ‘We are very rachawaq (far) from you,’ when you live qarab (among / near) us?

Now therefore you are arar (cursed), and some of you will never karath (cut) to be ibad (servant), both itz (wood) cutters and drawers of mayam (Waters) for the bayath (house) of my Alahayam ().”

They inah (answer / respond) Yahawashawai (Joshua), and amar (spoke), “Because your ibad (servant) were nagad (certainly) nagad (told) how Yahawah () your Alahayam () tzawah (commanded) his ibad (servant) Mashah (Moses) to nathan (give) you all the aratz (Earth/land), and to shamad (destroy) all the yashabay (inhabitants) of the aratz (Earth/land) from panayam (face) you. Therefore we were very yaraa (fear / be afraid) for our lives panayam (face) of you, and ishah (make) done this thing.

Now, han (behold), we are in your yad (hand). Ishah (make) to us as it seems tawab (good / proper function) and yashar (upright) to you to ishah (make).”

He ishah (make) so to them, and natzal (delivered) them out of the yad (hand) of the banay (my son) of Yashar-Al (Israel), so that they didn't harag (kill) them.

That yawam (day) Yahawashawai (Joshua) nathan (give) them itz (wood) cutters and drawers of mayam (Waters) for the idah (congregation) and for the mazabach (altar) of Yahawah (), to this yawam (day), in the maqawam (place) which he should bachar (choose).
