Judges 16 — English–Hebrew Parallel

Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson) yalak (went) to Izah (Gaza), and raah (see / saw) there a prostitute, and bawaa (bring) in to her.

The izathay (gazites) were amar (said), “Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson) is here!” They surrounded him, and arab (laid) wait for him all layal (night) in the shair (gate) of the iyar (city), and were charash (quiet) all the layal (night), amar (said), “Wait until baqar (morning) awar (light), then we will harag (kill) him.”

Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson) shakab (lay) until chatzay (midnight), and qawam (rise up) at chatzay (midnight), and achaz (laid) hold of the dalathawath (doors) of the shair (gate) of the iyar (city), and the shanayam (two) mazawazawath (posts), and plucked them up, barayach (bar) and all, and shawam (place / establish / appoint) them on his kathap (shoulders), and carried them up to the raash (head) of the har (mountain) that is panayam (face) Chabarawan (Hebron).

It came to pass afterward, that he ahab (love) a ayashah (woman / wife) in the nachal (stream / river) of Shawaraq (Sorek), whose sham (name) was Dalayalah (Delilah).

The saranay (lords) of the Palashathay (Philistines) ilah (go up / offer) up to her, and amar (said) to her, “pathah (entice) him, and raah (see / saw) in which his gadawal (very great/important/mighty) kach (strength / mighty / power) lies, and by what means we may yakal (prevail) against him, that we may asar (bind) him to inah (answer / respond) him; and we will ayash (man / husband) nathan (give) you eleven hundred pieces of kasap (silver).”

Dalayalah (Delilah) amar (said) to Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson), “Please nagad (tell) me where your gadawal (very great/important/mighty) kach (strength / mighty / power) lies, and what you might be asar (bound) to inah (answer / respond) you.”

Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson) amar (said) to her, “If they asar (bind) me with shabai (seven) lach (green) yatharayam (cords) that were never charab (dried), then shall I become chalah (afflict), and be as another adam (man).”

Then the saranay (lords) of the Palashathay (Philistines) ilah (go up / offer) up to her shabai (seven) lach (green) yatharayam (cords) which had not been charab (dried), and she asar (bound) him with them.

Now she had an arab (ambush) waiting in the chadar (inner) room. She amar (said) to him, “The Palashathay (Philistines) are on you, Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson)!” He nathaq (broke) the yatharayam (cords), as a string of nairath (tow) is nathaq (broken) when it touches the ash (fire). So his kach (strength / mighty / power) was not yadai (known).

Dalayalah (Delilah) amar (said) to Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson), “Behold, you have hathal (mocked) me, and dabar (word / matter) me kazabayam (lies): now please nagad (tell) me with which you might be asar (bound).”

He amar (said) to her, “If they only asar (bind) me with chadash (new) ibathayam (ropes) with which no malaakah (work) has been done, then shall I become chalah (afflict), and be as another adam (man).”

So Dalayalah (Delilah) laqach (take / seize) chadash (new) ibathayam (ropes), and asar (bound) him therewith, and amar (said) to him, “The Palashathay (Philistines) are on you, Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson)!” The arab (ambush) was waiting in the chadar (inner) room. He nathaq (broke) them off his zarawai (arms) like a chawat (thread).

Dalayalah (Delilah) amar (said) to Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson), “Until hanah (Behold), you have hathal (mocked) me and dabar (word / matter) me kazabayam (lies). Nagad (tell) me with what you might be asar (bound).” He amar (said) to her, “If you weave the shabai (seven) machalapawath (locks) of my raash (head) with the masakath (web).”

She thaqai (blow / sound alarm) it with the yathad (pin), and amar (said) to him, “The Palashathay (Philistines) are on you, Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson)!” He awakened out of his shanah (sleep), and plucked nasai (away) the yathad (pin) of the arag (beam), and the masakath (web).

She amar (said) to him, “ayak (how) can you amar (said), ‘I ahab (love) you,’ when your lab (heart) is not with me? You have hathal (mocked) me these shalawash (three) paimayam (times), and have not nagad (told) me where your gadawal (very great/important/mighty) kach (strength / mighty / power) lies.”

It happened, when she tzawaq (pressed) him yawam (day) with her dabar (word / matter), and alatz (urged) him, that his napash (soul) was qatzar (troubled) to mawath (death).

He nagad (told) her all his lab (heart), and said to her, “No mawarah (razor) has ever ilah (go up / offer) on my raash (head); for I have been a Nazirite to Alahayam () from my am (mother) batan (womb). If I am galach (shaved), then my kach (strength / mighty / power) will sawar (go) from me, and I will become chalah (afflict), and be like any other adam (man).”

When Dalayalah (Delilah) raah (see / saw) that he had nagad (told) her all his lab (heart), she shalach (send) and qaraa (called) for the saranay (lords) of the Palashathay (Philistines), amar (said), “ilah (go up / offer) up paim (this) once, for he has nagad (told) me all his lab (heart).” Then the saranay (lords) of the Palashathay (Philistines) ilah (go up / offer) up to her, and ilah (go up / offer) the kasap (money) in their yad (hand).

She made him sleep on her barak (blessed); and she qaraa (called) for a ayash (man / husband), and galach (shaved) off the shabai (seven) machalapawath (locks) of his raash (head); and she chalal (began) to inah (answer / respond) him, and his kach (strength / mighty / power) sawar (went) from him.

She amar (spoke), “The Palashathay (Philistines) are upon you, Shamashawan (Samson)!” He awoke out of his shanah (sleep), and amar (spoke), “I will yatzaa (go out / come out) out as at other paim (times), and nair (shake) myself free.” But he didn't yadai (know) that Yahawah () had sawar (departed) from him.

The Palashathay (Philistines) achaz (laid) hold on him, and naqar (put) out his iyan (eye); and they yarad (brought) him down to Izah (Gaza), and asar (bound) him with nachashathayam (fetters) of brass; and he tachan (ground) at the mill in the asar (prison).

However the shair (hair) of his raash (head) chalal (began) to tzamach (grow) again ashar (who/that) he was galach (shaved).

The saranay (lords) of the Palashathay (Philistines) asap (gathered) them together to zabach (offer) a gadawal (very great/important/mighty) zabach (sacrifice) to Dagawan (Dagon) their Alahayam (), and to shamachah (rejoice); for they amar (spoke), “Our Alahayam () nathan (give) delivered Shamashawan (Samson) our ayab (enemy) into our yad (hand).”

When the im (nation / people) raah (see) him, they halal (praise) their Alahayam (); for they amar (spoke), “Our Alahayam () nathan (give) delivered our ayab (enemy) and the charab (destroyer) of our aratz (Earth/land), who has chalal (slain) many of us, into our yad (hand).”

It happened, when their lab (heart) were tawab (good / proper function), that they amar (said), “qaraa (called) for Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson), that he may entertain us.” They qaraa (called) for Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson) out of the bayath (house); and he performed panayam (face) them. They imad (set) him between the imawadayam (pillars);

And Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson) amar (said) to the nair (boy) who chazaq (held) him by the yad (hand), “Allow me to yamash (feel) the imadayam (those who stand) whereupon the bayath (house) kawan (rests), that I may shain (lean) on them.”

Now the bayath (house) was malaa (full) of anashayam (men) and nashayam (women); and all the saranay (lords) of the Palashathay (Philistines) were there; and there were on the gag (roof) about shalawash (three) alap (thousand) anashayam (men) and nashayam (women), who raah (see / saw) while Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson) performed.

Shamashawan (Samson) qaraa (called) to Yahawah (), and amar (spoke), “Adawan () Yahawah (), zakar (remember) me, please, and chazaq (strengthen) me, please, only paim (this) once, Alahayam (), that I may be at paim (once) naqam (avenged) of the Palashathay (Philistines) for my shanayam (two) iyan (eye).”

Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson) lapath (took) hold of the shanayam (two) thawak (midst) imawaday (pillars) on which the bayath (house) rested, and leaned on them, the achad (one) with his right yamayan (right hand), and the other with his shamaawal (left hand).

Shamashawan (Shamashawan / Samson) amar (said), “Let me mawath (death) with the Palashathay (Philistines)!” He natah (bowed) himself with all his kach (strength / mighty / power); and the bayath (house) napal (fall / be cast down) on the saranayam (lords), and on all the im (nation / people) who were therein. So the mawath (death) that he mawath (death) at his mawath (death) were more than those who he mawath (death) in his chay (life).

Then his ach (brother/kinsman) and all the bayath (house) of his ab (father) yarad (came) down, and nashaa (lift) him, and ilah (go up / offer) him up, and qabar (grave / tomb / sepulcher) him between Tzaraih (Zorah) and Ashathaal (Eshtaol) in the burial site of Manawach (Manoah) his ab (father). He shapat (judge / judgement) Yashar-Al (Israel) isharayam (twenty) shanah (years).
