Ruth 1 — English–Hebrew Parallel

It happened in the yamay (days) when the shapatayam (judges) shapat (judge / judgement), that there was a raib (famine) in the aratz (Earth/land). A certain ayash (man / husband) of Bayath-Lacham (Bethlehem Judah) yalak (went) to live in the shadah (country) of Mawaab (Moab), he, and his ayashah (woman / wife), and his shanayam (two) ban (son).

The sham (name) of the ayash (man / husband) was Alayamalak (Elimelech), and the sham (name) of his ayashah (woman / wife) Naimay (Naomi), and the sham (name) of his shanayam (two) ban (son) Machalawan (Mahlon) and Kalayawan (Chilion), aparathayam (ephrathites) of Bayath-Lacham (Bethlehem Judah). They bawaa (bring) into the shadah (country) of Mawaab (Moab), and continued there.

Alayamalak (Elimelech), Naimay (Naomi's) ayash (man / husband), mawath (death); and she was shaar (left), and her shanayam (two) ban (son).

They nashaa (lift) them wives of the nashayam (women) of mawaabay (moab); the sham (name) of the achad (one) was Irapah (Orpah), and the sham (name) of the other Rawath (Ruth): and they lived there about ishar (ten) shanayam (two).

Machalawan (Mahlon) and Kalayawan (Chilion) shanayam (two) mawath (death), and the ayashah (woman / wife) was bereaved of her shanayam (two) yalad (birth / begot) and of her ayash (man / husband).

Then she qawam (rise up) with her daughters-in-law, that she might shawab (turn back / repent) from the shadah (country) of Mawaab (Moab): for she had shamai (hearken / hear) in the shadah (country) of Mawaab (Moab) how that Yahawah () paqad (visit) visited his im (nation / people) in nathan (give) them lacham (bread).

She yatzaa (go out / come out) forth out of the maqawam (place) where she was, and her shanayam (two) daughters-in-law with her; and they yalak (went) on the darak (way) to shawab (turn) to the aratz (Earth/land) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah).

Naimay (Naomi) amar (spoke) to her shanayam (two) daughters-in-law, “yalak (go), shawab (turn back / repent) ayashah (woman / wife) of you to her am (mother) bayath (house): Yahawah () ishah (make) chasad (grace) with you, as you ishah (make) dealt with the mawath (death), and with me.

Yahawah () nathan (give) you that you may matzaa (find) manawachah (rest), ayashah (woman / wife) of you in the bayath (house) of her ayash (man / husband).” Then she nashaq (kissed) them, and they nashaa (lift) up their qawal (sound / voice), and bakah (wept).

They amar (said) to her, “No, but we will shawab (turn) with you to your im (nation / people).”

Naimay (Naomi) amar (said), “shawab (turn) back, my banath (daughter). Why do you want to yalak (go) with me? Do I still have banayam (sons) in my maih (womb), that they may be your anashayam (husbands)?

Shawab (turn) back, my banath (daughter), yalak (go) your way; for I am too zaqan (old) to have a ayash (man / husband). If I should amar (said), ‘I yash (have) thaqawah (hope),’ if I should even have a ayash (man / husband) tonight, and should also yalad (birth / begot) banayam (sons);

Would you then shabar (wait) until they were gadal (grown)? Would you then refrain from having ayash (man / husband)? No, my banath (daughter), for it grieves me much for your sakes, for the yad (hand) of Yahawah () yatzaa (go out / come out) gone out against me.”

They nashaa (lift) up their qawal (sound / voice), and bakah (wept) again: and Irapah (Orpah) nashaq (kissed) her mother-in-law, but Rawath (Ruth) dabaq (joined) with her.

She amar (spoke), “Behold, your sister-in-law has shawab (turn back / repent) back to her im (nation / people), and to her Alahayam (). Follow your sister-in-law.”

Rawath (Ruth) amar (spoke), “Don't pagai (entreat) me to izab (leave) you, and to shawab (turn back / repent) from achar (other) after you, for where you yalak (go), I will yalak (go); and where you lawan (lodge), I will lawan (lodge); your im (nation / people) shall be my im (nation / people), and your Alahayam () my Alahayam ();

Where you mawath (death), will I mawath (death), and there will I be qabar (bury). Yahawah () ishah (make) so to me, and more also, if anything but mawath (death) parad (part) you and me.”

When she raah (see / saw) that she was steadfastly amatz (minded) to yalak (go) with her, she chadal (left) off dabar (word / matter) to her.

So they shanayam (two) yalak (went) until they bawaa (bring) to Bayath-Lacham (Bethlehem). It happened, when they bawaa (bring) come to Bayath-Lacham (Bethlehem), that all the iyar (city) was hawam (moved) about them, and they asked, “Is this Naimay (Naomi)?”

She amar (spoke) to them, “Don't qaraa (called) me Naimay (Naomi). Qaraa (called) me Maraa (Mara); for the Shaday () has dealt very bitterly with me.

I halak (move) out malaa (full), and Yahawah () has shawab (turn back / repent) me home again rayaqam (empty); why do you qaraa (called) me Naimay (Naomi), since Yahawah () has inah (answer / respond) against me, and the Shaday () has raii (wicked / dysfunctional / evil) me?”

So Naimay (Naomi) shawab (turn back / repent), and Rawath (Ruth) the Moabitess, her kalah (complete / finish), with her, who shawab (turn back / repent) out of the shadah (country) of Mawaab (Moab): and they bawaa (come) to Bayath-Lacham (Bethlehem) in the thachalah (beginning) of shairah (barley) qatzayar (harvest).
