The Song of the Bow
2 Samuel 1:17–27
How are the mighty fallen — Dawad's lament over the king who hunted him and the friend he loved.
17 Dawad (David) qawan (lamented) with this qayanah (lamentation) over Shaawal (Sheol / afterlife) and over Yahawanathan (Jonathan) his ban (son)
18 (And he commanded them to lamad (teach / instruct) the banay (my son) of Yahawadah (Yahawadah / Judah) the song of the qashath (bow): behold, it is kathab (write) in the sapar (book / scribed document) of Jashar):
19 “Your glory, Yashar-Al (Israel), is chalal (slain) on your bamah (high) places! How the gabawar (mighty) napal (fall / be cast down) fallen!
20 Don't nagad (tell) it in gath (gath). Don't bashar (publish) it in the chawatzath (streets) of Ashaqalawan (Ashkelon), lest the banawath (daughters) of the Palashathay (Philistines) shamach (rejoice), lest the banawath (daughters) of the iral (uncircumcised) ilaz (triumph).
21 You haray (mountains) of Galabai (Gilboa), let there be no tal (dew) nor matar (rain) on you, neither shaday (fields) of tharawamath (offerings); For there the magan (shield) of the gabawar (mighty) was gail (vilely) cast away, The magan (shield) of Shaawal (Sheol / afterlife) was not mashayach (anointed one) with shaman (oil).
22 From the dam (blood) of the chalal (slain), from the chalab (fat) of the gabawar (mighty), Yahawanathan (Jonathan's) qashath (bow) didn't shawag (turn) achawar (back). Shaawal (Sheol / afterlife) charab (sword) didn't shawab (turn) rayaqam (empty).
23 Shaawal (Sheol / afterlife) and Yahawanathan (Jonathan) were lovely and naiyam (pleasant) in their chay (life). In their mawath (death), they were not parad (divided). They were qalal (swifter) than nasharayam (eagles). They were gabar (stronger) than arayawath (lions).
24 You banawath (daughters) of Yashar-Al (Israel), bakah (weep) over Shaawal (Sheol / afterlife), who labash (clothed) you in shanay (second) delicately, who ilah (go up / offer) iday (ornament / adornment) of zahab (gold) on your labawash (clothing).
25 How are the gabawar (mighty) napal (fall / be cast down) in the thawak (midst) of the malachamah (battle)! Yahawanathan (Jonathan) is chalal (slain) on your bamah (high) places.
26 I am tzarar (distressed) for you, my ach (brother/kinsman) Yahawanathan (Jonathan). You have been very naim (pleasant) to me. Your ahabah (love) to me was palaa (be wonderful / extraordinary / marvelous), passing the ahabah (love) of nashayam (women).
27 How are the gabawar (mighty) napal (fall / be cast down), and the kalay (weapons) of malachamah (war) abad (destroy / perish)!”
